I'm trying to find a decent bag size for a trip AND to use at university for gym gear + laptop/a book. What size do you guys think is a good size to aim for? I was planning on taking said bag on a trip to japan and some small backpacking trips. Should I go for bigger than 40L?

Carry on size. Get a Deuter 30L, 35L at most, hardback if you prefer.

It's not gonna be ideal for a laptop though.
On the other hand, laptop specialised backpacks are pretty good for traveling, although not ideal for walking, hiking, etc.

Damn, these seem hard to find in Canada. But basically what you said is 'Don't get above 40L' I guess. I walk around 1h30 a day to get to University and around, so I kind of want something to not break my back when I carry my gym shoes and shit. I hate using a locker so I just carry my shit around.

Check out mec.ca homie. They carry Deuter packs, although I'm a huge fan of their own-brand (MEC). Rock solid warranty on anything too if it ever fucks up / breaks.

If you live near a store definitely drop in. You can walk around with a pack and they have weight sacks that you can use to see how it feels with load.

I'm around Montreal, in Sherbrooke. I'll check where the stores are, but thanks.

Lad, you only need 40L+ if you're doing some serious wilderness camping or if you're a freshman socal grill who needs >9000 shirts for hostel hopping in Europe.

The smaller size is a lot more convenient in almost all situations, except if you're gonna carry something with weird dimensions.

So what would you consider for school? some 35L?

There are travel pack with wheels and straps that can be stowed away and then there are backpacking packs.
Airlines will no longer check the latter because the straps get hung up in shit in transit. This means you need to put the whole thing in a special bag which is not cheap that you will need to tote all over during your vacation.

I haven't encountered this and I fly budget lines like Ryan and Wizz.
>>
>>1160489
They let you check a backpacking pack with the shoulder straps exposed?
>>
>>1160490
Not check in the sense that it's put in the cargo hold with the other luggage, but yes, I constantly go on flights with my backpack that's covered with all kinds of hanging straps and doohickeys. Usually without even a second glance.
But if you were talking about actually checking in your baggage then I haven't had experience with that and could see how it could be sort of a problem.

Everytime I've flown with mine they just asked me to tie up the straps to the best of my ability. I've never had any issues that a 2 min delay didn't solve.

>actually checking in your baggage
yes that is what I am talking about.
A large backpacking pack is far to big to carry on

Ive been using a goruck gr2 for travel and school. I bought it originally for when i was in service, and wanted a special snowflake bag. Then i ended up using it for school and travel over every other bag i own. I was able to pack for a 30 day eurotrip with 5 changes of shirts and pants and 10 days worth of socks and underwear, as well as dress shoes and toiletries and such. Fully packed it fit under the seat of every plane and bus in the US and EU. I have bought and tried other medium sized packs but i still come back to my gr2, due to its durability and how non descript it appears. Idk why but bright color bags made of thin material, and tactical bags with straps all over bother my eyes. So this is the best option for me.

Well you peaked my interest but 400 American?
Jesus it doesn't even have a charging station.

I'm thinking of travelling around Mexico and was thinking of getting a sub-25 litre backpack.

The only real problem I can see with this is lack of clothes in a climate where you'll probably sweat.
