Amerifag here

I'm planning to visit either Russia (the european part) or Eastern Europe (Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary) this summer, provided nothing gets in the way. Firstly, which should I go for? I have a slightly greater interest in Russia (and I have been studying the language), but I have heard that the other three are likely safer. I'll be going alone unless I can find someone to come with me.

Secondly, which places in either country/ies should I go to, and which should I avoid? Concerning Russia, I've had some tell me that I have to see Moscow and Saint Petersburg, while others say I should stick to smaller cities (like Rostov or Voronezh IIRC). I don't know much about the other countries other than that Budapest and Prague are apparently pretty.

This is my first trip overseas for the purpose of tourism/vacationing. The only other time i've left the country is to visit family in Australia, and my parents were always handling those trips.

Quite literally any information that I can get on this subject will be very helpful. I am going to do personal research too, but I don't quite know where to look.
>>
First answer me this.. why the fuck would you want to go to those countries?????

Europa is filled with amazing countries filled to the brink with historic structures, safe environment, great nightlife, amazing foods and more.. And you pick shithole countries like Russia, Poland and Hungary?!? i mean??... WHY?
>>
>>1153542
>Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary

For all intents and purposes, that's Central Europe.
>>
>>1153542
>This is my first trip overseas for the purpose of tourism/vacationing. The only other time i've left the country is to visit family in Australia, and my parents were always handling those trips.

Go to Eastern/Central Europe. More developed, everything is easier and safer

Then if you liked it, Russia will be interesting. Its also a hassle to get into Russia because of invitations and visas and shit.
>>
>>1153545
I bet you're a butthurt Portuguese or something. Hungary, Czech and Poland are absolutely beautiful both in nature as well as architecture in cities. The only thing about the culture that's shit is the food (imo).

I've only been to St pet and Moscow in Russia so I can't be of much help besides saying they're definitely worth the visit.

>>1153549
The visas used to be a problem when I was there (literally 12 years ago or something) but I'm not sure that's still a thing desu.

I would vow for Central Europe OP. You could think of including Slowakia or Slovenia.
>>
>>1153545
The ignorance of this statement is mind-blowing. Poland is outstanding! Krakow is such an awesome historical college town with beautiful women. Budapest, Hungary is next level awesome! and Prague in Czech Republic is one hell of a good time.

I have never been to Russia, but i would assume its an great time. Just go with an open mind and don't listen to this guys answer.

If you are worried about safety in Russia stick to Moscow and St. Petersburg. Tourists are common sight there at least, policemen are always nearby and unless you go to really shitty neighbourhoods at night you'll be ok. In smaller towns there's nothing really there to see and you'll be sticking out like a sore thumb. Outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg there's also "Golden Ring" - several old Russian towns around Moscow that are worth a visit, but you can just buy a tour around them from Moscow.
>>
op here
>>1153598
east of Germany/austria/italy is what i generally consider 'eastern europe'

>>1153572
I'm aware of the visa issue. I'm prepared to tackle it if I decide on Russia. My biggest concern going to Russia is my safety whilst going alone- I've heard that they don't always treat Americans the best. My Russian friend insists that it's safe, however, so I don't really know who to believe on the issue.

I'd love to meet up with said russian friend, but she lives in the russian far east, which I don't intend to visit
>>
>>1153689
>east of Germany/austria/italy is what i generally consider 'eastern europe'
Yeah that's pretty dumb. Vienna lies farther East than Prague lol.

Apart from the 40 years of Soviet cucking Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia and Poland have always been considered as East-Central Europe.
>>
>>1153689
I would like to throw my figurative hat in the ring and say try to stop by Serbia, especialy the national parks.
Go to the Đerdap lake if you want to se a lot of cool archeological sites, castles, good food , activities and what not.
Tbh any of the bigger cities would be interesting, https://www.youtube.com/user/cather76/videos
check out his videos if you need convincing.
>>
OP, why don't you just go to Ukraine? Save Russia for when you have a bit more experience and balls.
>>
is Bratislava worth a visit? I'm planning to go Budapest-Bratislava-Krakow-Warsaw-Kiev. Are there any cities that I should stop by on the way? Also what is the cheapest way to move between these cities
>>
As a person living in Siberia, I'd recommend visiting Prague, Vienna, Budapest and maybe St Petersburg. There's not much to do here anyway.
>>
>>1154229
I fuckin hated Slovaks, there literally only seem to be angry and unhappy ones. The city is quite picturesque tho, and there's nice nature.
>>
>>1154117
You don't need balls to visit Moscow or St. Petersburg

Anyways I figure this would a be a good place to ask a general Russia question. So, I already have a tourist visa and have visited Moscow before and I'm looking to go back to Russia again. However this time I don't plan on staying in a hotel and instead I'll be staying in my friend's apartment. When I visit do I have to register my visa somewhere? I think when you stay in a hotel it automatically happens, so I'm just curious on how this process works.
>>
It is enough to observe simple safety rules: don't drink with strangers, don't stay in dangerous areas at night, do not show that you have a lot of money. accept as a fact that you are not insured against accidents. YOU can come to Moscow and Petersburg, Petersburg better than Moscow. If you want to see a Russian province, leave the idea for a second voyage. Learn the basics of the Russian language.
>>
>>1153788
Not OP, but Prague used to be a socialist country. Basically anything that was communist/socialist, with the exception of Italy because of it's historical significance to the USA/Western Culture, is considered Eastern Europe to Americans. Hell, we basically only learn about Greek, Romans (Italians), French, Spanish, English, and Germans in school with any sort of depth.

Czechoslovakia
>>
>>1154386
Czechoslovakia doesn't exist anymore friendo
>>
>>1154394
No shit, Sherlock. It would be incorrect to say Czech Republic is/was socialist. You're missing the point that Americans associate former Soviet Union and all the countries that bordered it like Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, amd Romania. In America, Former Commies = Eastern Europe. As opposed to "The West" which is are allies in Europe. That's basically the line for us. And no one even uses the term "central Europe"
>>
>>1153572
>The visas used to be a problem when I was there
Not a big problem nowadays, although given the acrimonious state of US-Russia relations these days, so perhaps they will get hard again. There are specialist travel agents that provide the invitation letters, which are pretty much a formality.

>>1153542
>travels alone

Russian itt. Don't bother visiting, it's a shithole. If you're stubborn, then at least pls stay in Moscow and St.petersburg. Still, Get a car in Munich, go see Bayern and alps, then continue to, say, champagne, or you choose Italy. If you want something exotic, go to SEA.
I mean, I've been to around 60 countries and the only soulless plastic piece of shit countries were Russia and the US, you get the idea. No offense
>>
>>1154396
>No one uses the term Central Europe

We do mate, it's apparently just you amerifats that don't, but you're not alone on this planet.
>>
>>1154475
I was talking from a US perspective, hence the term "us" in the preceding sentence. As in no one in the US uses Central Europe. I was explaining what the USA calls Eastern Europe and why. It's basically a binary division stemming from the Cold War.
>>
>>1154445
I think it's harsh to call two of the largest countries entirely soulless/plastic. By sheer size there has to be something somewhere.
>>
>>1154513
I'm American and I was told by one of our European country heads to use the term "Central Europe" preferentially when talking with clients from the iron curtain regions, because apparently they get easily butthurt if you make insinuations about being a former USSR vassal state

Like basically ever country up to the Russian border, we're supposed to call "Central Europe". Czechoslovakia? Central Europe. Poland? Central Europe. Roumania? Central Europe. Byelo Russia? Central Europe. The Ukraine? Central Europe. Russia isn't Central Europe because Russia is Russia, although you're apparently supposed to still call them Europeans because even Russians get butthurt over not being part of Europe, even though they pretty much aren't by any logical point of view.

I find it kind of silly, but it doesn't cost me anything to pander to their ridiculous pride, so I've habituated myself to the usage of the term.
>>
>>1154538

I wasn't speaking from a point of pride. I was simply trying to inform why Americans only use the terms Western and Eastern Europe and the Europoors got butthurt. I wasn't saying it was right, just saying why it is.
>>
>>1153689
Lived in Russia during the worst of Crimea conflict as an American. At worst I avoided a volunteer station in Moscow asking for money for DNR soldiers and had a homeless couple hassle me. They asked if I was American, I said I was a canuck because I didn't have time to argue, offered them each a cigarette and was on my way.

Will you meet people who don't like America? Sure. But everyone I met had no issues with Americans, just our country.

Actually it's quite easy. All the former Soviet states are Eastern Europe. The rest of it is central Europe. It's not rocket science, it actually makes sense geographically wise as well. In Ukraine or Latvia they wouldn't be butthurt if you call them Eastern Europe. Calling Poland Eastern Europe is just stupid both geographically as well as politically.

why? after all it was socialist, as were the other countries you mentioned

At that time it was Czechoslovakia. Socialist Republic of Czechoslovakia, I believe. Or maybe the Czechoslovakia Socialist Republic. Technically Czech Republic is a different state/nation.

Rusky here. I only recently moved to the us but before then been in Moscow. I've seen st. Petersburg too. Both pretty cities, especially Petersburg and the citizens are generally friendly, just be wary of sketchier neighborhoods and just night time in general. Police are good hearted but often lazy and not thorough o you can't always count on them. In general avoid going out at night

You need to register, go with your friend to any post office, get the forms, fill them out, go back (or fill them out there if you like spending a day at the Russian post office), then you'll have to do a little more paperwork and pay a fee.
Alternatively, there are agencies that will do it for you if lazy/no Russian/you have too much money.
