Came back from a one week trip to Istria a few days ago. Didn´t expect too much and was surprised about these charming small towns. The major downside was, that there was a shitton of tourists, but I guess thats the same anywhere in august.
Be sure to check out Rovinj. Found it a lot more charming than Porec.
We also stayed a night in Motovun. Really nice and cozy town on a hill. 10/10, would visit again, even though theres not much to do besides walking around the castle and eating truffle-dishes.
Pula was quite shitty. Would only go there if youre into history and want to see the roman arena.

Also: Consider going by bus when you want to do day-trips. Driving and finding a parking-spot was annoying. But propably thats a lot better during off-season.
