Sounds like a pretty good place to start m8, go to seat61.com, find the SEA map and make a plan.
Pro-tip: the jungle line through Malaysia is amazing but will require you crossing the border via Sungai Kolok which imo is not actually that dangerous

Go to Kanchanaburi and check out all of the Bridge Over the River Kwai stuff, and Hellfire Pass & Death Railway, if you like trains.

I would get the train from bangkok to chiang mai as soon as you arrive and spend a week in the north (rent a moped). Get the train back down to bangkok and then get a coach/boat trip to koh samui and spend 4-5 days there. Then go to Krabi and the surrounding area for a week and then for the last week go back up to Bangkok and do a 1 or 2 day trip to Kanchanaburi and the old capital ayutthaya.
Check out the "death market" near Bangkok too. Right along a train track. (pic related)
The best beaches are on the small islands and around krabi.
