What is a "hidden gem"?

Is it supposed to mean some off the beaten path, unheard of place?

I googled some "hidden gems" and it's just people posting what I figured were major tourist destinations like Meteora, Santorini, CInque Terre, Tioman Island, etc.

Most places are documented in one way or another, such as on Wikitravel. So how is any thing or place "hidden"?
>>
>great resturant/bar in a place you wouldn't otherwise expect there to be one

>I googled "hidden gems" and didn't find any
That's the whole point of hidden gems, they're hidden and off the beaten path. They stay that way because it's not as easy to find them.

>Hidden Gems
In terms of destinations, mostly places that are less known or visited by your peer group (that can be as small as friends and as large as nationalities or entire continents)

Cinque Terre is a prime example, it's a weekend go to destination for Austrian, French, German and Swiss (to narrow it down: the entire alps and pre alps area) people mostly 25years and up that go there:
>to relax at the sea side
>family friendly but has some places to party or bars that are open till late
>enjoy the nature (hiking, biking, surfing)
>eat some nice food
>have some people around that speak your language to socialize but still get the vacation abroad feeling.
>not overcrowded and no english lads tour or german Ballerman tards near it.

Americans? There aren't many that go over to europe to chill at a beach without any "important sights/city" around. Those that go will get a special feeling as suddenly there're almost zero english speakers around them, everything feels still untouched might experience something they never expected, tell their friends and voila a new hidden gem is born.

It means "I learned about it within a few weeks of my trip therefore nobody else, especially not locals, have ever heard of it"

About the only term that grinds my gears more is "hole in the wall"

I think a hidden gem is something that surprises you

why does it surprise you? it can't surprise you because it was NICER than you thought. people don't like nice, and they don't chase nice, and when they find it they get bored of it fast.

something surprises you because you learned to enjoy something that you didn't think you would like. so a hidden gem depends on your own internal biases.

a hidden gem for me was a city that millions visit per year, but almost no one stays more than a day. it revealed soemthing new to me about how I liked to live my life that I'd never even considered before. it's not small, it's not out of the way. you're mis-attributing a property to a location that is fundamentally about the flaws of the human mind
>>
>>1149074
im only asking because in my application for an editorial job in travel asks me about a "hidden gem in a city that you're an expert in"

i feel like whatever i say could easily be countered with "hurr thats not relatively hidden enough by our count"
>>
>>1149079
>editorials
well in that case you're just pandering to idiots and writing a piece to make them feel smarter and massage their egos

if you lose it's because you chose a location that wasn't nearly shitty enough. how about choosing the site of the rwandan genocide, or a modern day warzone, or an ecuadorian village where women with a rare mutation turn into men on their 12th birthday?

take wherever the line is and push it just a little farther. if you're a writer you should know how this works
>>
>>1149080
you can judge my life decisions all you want. i'm trying to get experience and maybe a little extra side money.

and maybe you missed the word "application". im not writing a piece.

your examples raise another question to the term "hidden gem". does it refer to anything or does it fall on one side of the scale from bars/restaurants to historical/cultural sites?
>>
>>1149084
I'm not judging your life decisions. I'm telling you what your job is, since you ASKED me what to do, and clearly don't have a decent handle on it

so you're clearly not an expert in a smaller city, and you're clearly not experienced in writing

>what does hidden gem refer to
I just explained the context in which it refers to and gave you three examples. that's not good enough for you to either use, or make up your own? (because it's obvious you're making it up at this point.)
>>
>>1149088
Amusing. You're trying so hard to down intelligent and put others down in hopes of feeling better about yourself. Falling into the same trap teenagers do. Not only that but going along with the obligation to shitpost on 4chan.

It's truly amazing how such immature and considering how much you've missed the point, downright unintelligent the children like you are here. Even on the travel board.

Go back to /b/
>>
>>1149091
ah, okay, you ask me what to do, and I tell you, but then you ask me to refine the details of what you want to do, for you, and that means I'm a shitposter. you might as well ask me to format your resume for you too

I told you what to do. if you can't handle it, fuck off

I went to Cinque Terre this summer. About half of the tourists were Americans. Now Genoa is a hidden gem in my opinion, in the same region even.
>>
>>1149045
You have not seen a hidden gem until you have been assraped in a 1000 year old jungle temple in burma by a buff italian porn star who roofied your drink. That is today's hidden gem.
>>
>>1149074
I don't know what the autist calling you out was all about but this is a pretty good take on what the term is.

I will add that it isnt something that necessarily you didnt think would be nice/ learning, but something that ended up simply exceeding your expectations. Plenty of remote 'off the track' places I have been that I knew were going to be pretty cool, but ended up being 1000x cooler than I could have dreamed.
>>

Piss easy, OP, it's simply an amazing place or site that not a lot of tourists go to for whatever reason. Some truly hidden gems:

Yazd in Iran
Lalibela in Ethiopia
Kelimutu in Indonesia
The Golden Rock in Myanmar
The Pyramids of Meroe in Sudan
Timbuktu in Mali
>>
It is not really hidden in the sense that there are not a lot of people. But I hardly ever see it on here. Check out Lago Di Garda in northern Italy. It is a lake in the middle of the alps and it is great to go windsurfing, kiting, mountain biking etc. It is also rather cheap and the infrastructure is great. A lot of Germans go there and also a lot of locals live there. If you want to check out less traveled destinations close by you can check out Lake Iseo and the area around it.

Another place that is not unknown but never really crowded and you almost never find it here is the Grand Canyon du Verdon in southern France. Great landscape, cheap acommodation and some really nice villages around.
