How the fuck did Manhattan get this mythical "greatest city on earth" reputation? Some areas of Brooklyn are genuinely charming (Cobble Hill, Park Slope), but Manhattan (including the "luxurious" Upper East Side) is a fucking dump. Between various work trips and family/friend visits, I've collectively spent over 5 months there. I've hit up every "secret gem" that locals have assured me would make me feel The Real Magic of Manhattan, and absolutely nothing has. Everything that the locals have assured me is "truly a New York original" (whether it be a jazz club, cocktail bar, dive bar, ethnic food, steak house, rooftop party, or "pop up" bakery/bar/juicing station) is simply a shittier, more expensive version of something that exists in every major city on the planet.

What am I missing, /trv/? Is there some "thing" about Manhattan that's amazingly self-evident that I just don't get, or is New York the ultimate "Emperor's New Clothes" city?

The most fun I had in New York was getting to drive like a madman with all the taxis in a car that had been hit by a deer on the way but the ex didn't wanna turn around. That and I've seen some good underground music there but in terms of it having its own vibe.... Eh, it was mediocre.
>>

French here.
The "magic" for me was to finally see with my own eyes those streets, buildings, monuments and clichés that I grew up seeing on TV and silverscreen.
Lot of French people laugh at tourists getting gouged for pseudo French experience in Paris. A picnic of wine and cheese at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. A romantic candlelit dinner by the Seine. An overpriced café au lait on the Champs Elysées, looking at the Arc de Triomphe.
But I don't laugh at them, as I'm 100% aware that I did the exact NYC equivalent. I had a hot dog from a cart and a slice from a pizza parlor. I had a Reuben at Carnegie's even tho I had better deli food in HK. I sat down in Central Park, photographed yellow cabs and stared at Grand Central's ceiling.
I guess NYC is a bit like Disneyland, it's only as magical as you'll allow it to be.
>>
i had a friend who lived there for a while, she tells me the best things were the underground, pop up parties that you can only find out about through word of mouth.

that sounds pretty dope to me to be honest
>>
>>1145262
New York is supposed to be gritty. It's part of it's personality. It isn't dirty and smelly everywhere, just Canal Street and the spots where homeless people recently took shits. I've never really had any encounters with aggressive beggers. Plenty of mentally ill people shouting things at you in Midtown, but, again, part of the NYC experience. My knowledge of US cities doesn't extend past the east coast but I can assure you the locals (not the transplants) are much more funny and fun to be around than the average Bostonian or DC native. I never really went to any "authentic" yuppie places and juice bars and drip coffee bars that profit off of rich NYU students. Just stick to the local neighborhood eateries. I don't know what you're talking about the women. There's 10 million people in the city and it's the most diverse location in the world. There is every kind of woman you could think of there.
>>
>>1145262
people are brainwashed by propaganda

hunger is the best spice and a miserable life is the best neurological stimulant in terms of finding shitty new york life "appealing." these people are self admittedly miserable and attach their identity to anything that makes them less miserable for 3 hours or gives them identity

>>1145311
tis is almost anywhere though. if you are integrated into the local culture almost anywhere has "totally cool insider things"

new york just sucks ass

like a 1k dollar pair of jeans that's "so cool."

or, maybe some people are just fucking idiots
>>
> any place with reasonably priced food doesn't take credit card
Bruh, this describes 99% places on earth. I mean, I'm glad I live in a country where it isn't the case, too, but when you're travelling you're usually gonna be using cash. Deal with it.
>>
>>1145484
A city loses its right to consider itself "gritty" when the rent per square footage is among the highest in the world and the "cheap, local, ethnic" food places charge $16 for something in a styrofoam box. And most "locals" and "Real New Yorkers" are actually spoiled rich kids from wealthy suburbs in New Jersey, Connecticut, Westchester County, and Long Island. For all the shit that transplants from the Midwest and California get, these fuckers are actually the ones jacking up rent with daddy's money while complaining about bankers, lawyers, and hipsters ruining "real" New York. Everyone I know who was actually born and raised in Manhattan left and has no desire to move back.

Again, I'm not talking about the more residential areas of Brooklyn, many of which do have character and plenty of awesome, cheap ethnic food. I'm talking about Manhattan and how it seems to be heresy to declare it anything less than the Best Place on the Planet.

>>1145311
Grew up in Seattle going to underground raves and concerts all the time. This is not something unique to New York.
>>
>>1145262
>>1145563

I'm confused as to why you keep going back to New York if you hate the place so much.

Anyway, I like the city. I've traveled a lot overseas and a fair amount in the United States. While a lot of me enthusiasm for NYC has worn off since my first few visits, I still enjoy visiting and walking around. There are genuinely a lot of things to do there, from free comedy shows and concerts to amazing opportunities for eating. Can't say that I was ever bothered by the garbage - I've grown up consuming media, much of which is set in NYC, and I expected it. Seems like a quiet but vibrant city now that I've traveled to dozens of developing countries.

Don't get what you're whining about. You don't have to like New York. If you don't like it, don't go. Bitch to your friends instead of asking what you "missed." Given your posts ITC, you just seem like one of those obnoxious cunts who's going to keep questioning and berating everybody else for like things you don't like.

I travel 75% of the time for work and my company has tons of clients in NY, so I have no choice. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of places worse than New York City (and many that are far better), but it's the only city where people actually get mad at me for not aspiring to live there.
>>
>>1145576
>but it's the only city where people actually get mad at me for not aspiring to live there.

Why do you feel the need to lie on the internet? I've lived here for 23 years of my life and no one has this type of mentality. We actually don't give a fuck where you want to live. I think you're the one with the inferiority complex.

I've heard the same sentiment and I don't live there. Who cares about your one opinion?
A lot of people who really like NY do think of it in the way he suggests when you don't like it.

I've always known I wouldn't care at all to live there 12 months out of the year. Divide my time like a snowbird, or someone with a weekend home (or two), then maybe yes, but only with the highest of income would I enjoy NYC like other people do. That's my standards.

On my last visit, which was about a month ago with amazing weather and light traffic, I saw a friend in the morning at Mt Sinai on 5th avenue, zig zagged my walk up Madison, Lexington, shopping and going into galleries, buying, window shopping, having nice snacks, great lunch, had a lovely explore of a wing of the MET, fantastic dinner, all in high rent neighborhoods, and all I could do was smell PISS EVERYWHERE in front of every building with nice guards standing in the shade but with garbage or piss smells. Intolerable. The whole city needs to be hosed off twice a day. I think why people like it is the choice of things, and some very good things, and when you get to a certain income, companionship with peers of similar education or interests. But, nice it is not.

for most "tourist" the appeal of NYC is how iconic and unique it is (Films & others)

I'm moving there to study, and the appeal of it to me It how big it is and the amount of people that live there.
NYC is a place where almost everyone has or will go at some point of their life. this means you have a shitone of people of allover the world at the same place. and I love that.

I'm from Barcelona so dirty streets and weird people make me feel like home.

Yuh Sher showed him skeeter, greatest city in the greatest country in the world!
>>
>>1146550
Lol absolutely not. I'm from San Francisco, I live in San Francisco, and I even work for a stupid fucking startup. SF is not the cultural capital of the western world.

SF is filled with delusional hipsters who move here because they think they're so unlike the "stupid redneck savages" in places like NYC, Boston or Charlotte. Even though all those cities can be perfectly nice places to live, depending on what you want from your town. They then meet the REAL San Francisco, which is a melange of working-class Mexican dudes, religious Catholics, clannish Chinese people between 35-90, landowning conservative-minded gay men, and right-leaning rich Democrats in the Marina. The hipsters' reaction is to sneer at these flies in the ointment that is their fantasy SF.

NONE of those things are exported beyond the city's borders. You see, the "cultural moment" SF is having is actually a national cultural moment, where tons of self-important millennials think "I should go to San Francisco and be with my people." SF isn't a place. It's an abstract ideal, part of a narcissistic fantasy.

Funny story: when I was at school in SF, I saw some transplant lambaste the USF president on Facebook. The reason? He was excited Pope Francis (a Jesuit) had become Pope. Transplant posted a comment about how USF needed to "adopt San Francisco values" if it wanted to "be a part of the city." He'd only been in SF for about 1.5 years, all that time as a pampered rich kid cosseted in a dorm out in the Inner Richmond, but he'd already figured out what San Francisco values were. And they were apparently contrary to the rather tame statements of a left-leaning Catholic university which had been in town for over 150 years. You're interrupting my daydream, GIT OUT!!1

I'm not a nativist. I have no desire to close the gates on outsiders. But this idea of San Francisco which everyone loves doesn't come from San Francisco. It's coming from outside the house, as it were.
>>
>>1146623

>SF isn't a place. It's an abstract ideal, part of a narcissistic fantasy.

When you think about it, that's all that SF has been for the past 50 years.
To my parents generation it was heaven on earth, bare chested women smoking joints while frolicking in the blooming flowers with Iron Butterfly blasting in the VW van.
When I was younger (late 90's/early 2000s) it was the place where my nerd schoolmates dreamt to work in after graduation. The place where computers are not beige anymore and teenagers drive Ferraris because they sold their start-up 6 days after founding it.
Neither my parents nor said schoolmates even visited SF once. It remained an abstract just like you said.

I have visited it once on a trip to LA - Vegas - Yosemite - SF.

I did enjoy the almost european vibe of the city, the sights, the surroundings (I really liked Petaluma for its America circa 1956 vibe) but I didn't really feel the urge to move in the city.

I was in New York over ten years ago and I found the city rather unappealing. In many ways it felt like the 'modern american mindset' condensed and made manifest. It's dirty, sweaty, cramped, and is surprisingly small. The city feels superficial and meaningless, as though its inhabitants never felt any calling more profound than money and status. People will attempt to hustle you for money, people will bump into you on the sidewalk despite the fact that you oblige them by moving to the side, a lot of 'strange' people (junkies, homeless, mad, beggars) etc. Most of the erratic behavour comes from blacks. The entire city feels like a playground for vice and nothing else, where people can indulge their gluttony, pride, or lusts whenever they please. People are also extremely poorly dressed.
