If you're a sporty person, you could go hiking for a bit. I wouldn't recommend the GR20 because that shit was still dangerous and icy and slippery when I got back three weeks ago. But maybe hike up to a réfuge, spend the night there and then take another path down?

There's one at every stop, except for one that burnt down last year or two years ago. Fucking winter hikers, man. Your best bet might be to take a bus/train to Vizzavona, go hike for a day or two and get back. But be sure to check beforehand: people die there every year, in ideal summer circumstances. October is not summer up in the mountains.
