I want to travel to Switzerland for a week with my girlfriend in the coming days. Ive been told I should go to Interloken and Bern and I should avoid Geneva. Is this good advice? Where would the best place to enjoy the mountains and take a hike?
Im an American in France by the way so my French is only semi-passable.
check out the Mountain Hostel in Gimmelwald. The Jungfrau region has some stunning scenery and hiking options.

Valais is nice for hiking and stuff, Graubünden, too. Not as much tourism as interlaken. Jungfraujoch is really expensive if you want to go to the top. A lot of nice hiking spots in and around interlaken though, I recommend the harder kulm, short and easy hike and in case you're feeling tired you can take a lil' train down again.

Not many mountains at bern, maybe the meant the canton and not the city, the city is worth seeing though, the arcades and old wells are beautiful.

Trümmelbachfälle are close to interlaken, waterfalls inside of a cave, pretty neat

Interlaken is very tourism-oriented all the staff speak passable English, you should have no problems there. Most people will probably speak worse French than you.
Geneva is cool though, you coming from France, I'm assuming via train, is still worth a stop imo.
Thanks a lot everyone I appreciate the advice. And I hope it doesnt eat all my funds lol

Go to a tourism info office or some train station. You can ask those people for other hiking advice, the hotel reception should be able to inform you as well, even if it's an hostel. I'm not a hiking expert, but they'll gladly help you. Even about day trips to locations further away

Oh and interlaken is celebrating it's 125th anniversary, there's a whole celebration going down from June to august. entrance is free, they have folklore, lil tents to buy food, a lil' sandy beach, just made for this and a lot of nice wooden carvings. 1st august is also national holiday of switzerland, you could see a lot of traditional parades and stuff instead of hiking, old garments, cows with ancient cow bells etc.

Zermat is a cool place but getting there might be expensive. Also the Glacier express was cool, you get to ride through the mountains for like 7 hours. Lucerne is beautiful. I stayed in Zug for a while and it was nice. Lugano is down south and the weather is better and it was cool. Pretty much anywhere you go should be nice. Just very expensive. As for hiking I have no idea, I am sure there is a lot of spots in Switzerland.
