Maybe they like young travelers because they couldn't have kids of their own. Maybe they just like the company and have a spare room. Is this an exchange program? If so, all of the above, and presumably are getting paid.

You confirmed that they have never had children? Or is it only clear to you that there will be no children at the place where they are accommodating you i.e. maybe they has kids but they just wont be there?
