For al the ops traveling, backpacking, fucking, eating, tindering, exploring, hiking.
Through vietnam, cambodia, thailand, malaysia, whatever

Share stories, epic pictures, tips, do's, dont's.

Im on a 12 month traveling binge, eating everything i can find and fucking locals or travelers in every city ive been so far. Hiked through jungles alone. And couch surferd all along the way not a single dollar spent on hostels.
>>
I'm going to Thailand tomorrow, any tips? I'm trying to learn a few phrases but the language seems hard as fuck. I'm hoping there'll be a decent number of people that speak some english. Also, is it safe to drink tap water?
And any tips for surviving the 16 hour flight?
>>
No only bottled water. Everyone speaks english and every one sees u like a walking money bagg. Dont be the stupid tourist who gets mugged and fucked over. Oh and everyone tries to fuck u over. Thailand got raped by white people. They only returning the favour while smiling. The country has gone to shit. South especially. And suck it up its only a flight pussy. Fuck i hate thailand oh so many traps
>>
>>1089840
I'm gonna be mostly in the south (bangkok area, phuket) so I'm assuming it'll be pretty touristy. Are traps really that bad there? I was wondering how easy it is to hook up with locals.
How do you find places to stay? You must be doing it super cheap since you're not spending money on hostels.
>>
>>1089840
eat you mcdonalds and say thank you.
>>
>>1089833
can you post a general route of where you've been going? it sounds like an interesting adventure
>>
>>1089835
hello > saw wa dee krub (m)/kaa(f)
thank you > kab koon krub
you're welcome > mai bpen rai or yin dee

there is no literal translation for krub/kaa but it's how you formally end sentences with strangers/superiors.

O the flight there may be a phonetic language learning software. I can't remember the name, but most flights seem to have it now a days. You can pick up some basics that way. Fuck learning how to read that shit, though
>>
>>1089833
Tell us your story about the fucking please ? Are they locals via tinder or couchsurfing hosts etc ?
>>
>>1089833
don't go trail running/hiking alone. My friend got bit by two rabid dogs and had to get a rabies shot for it.

Where to visit in Vietnam ? We're thinking of Da Nang/Hoi An or Hanoi/Halong Bay. Will be going with my partner, first time traveling together as well.

Tinder. All these english teaching sluts.

Hostels, met a german girl sat in living room talked about my proffesion. Gave her massage. Fucked right there. Got best bj in my life like deepthroat and all. Dude walkes in freezes up walked back saying nothing. Shit was cash.

Malaysia. Met a girl wanted a massage. Driving in her car. She had rich parents. Said i got a nice apartment. (Was my couch surf host his, he was working) went over fucked. Wanted to text next day. Blocked on whatsapp and vanished like the wind.

Saigon. English teacher was a major fatty slut twerked for me and also deepthroat. Dont know what it is with asia and deepthroating. Probally major slut experience.

Thailand. Local pussy go crazy for 2 meter tall guy.

I have a fake fb acount which i give to these bitches so i can stay anon.

And i use fake gps to tinder on ahead.

And girls who host me while couchsurfing are all seemen demons. Prbly because i have all sport photos on my acount.

As soon as a girl knows u are traveling and a bit succesfull and u can hold up a conversation. They throw theire legs spread eagle open.
But u need to be bold and make the move or suggestion first. Because they dont want to look like sluts....

I mostly prerend the couch surf host who host me i own theire houses. Mostly rich guys. Sluts are whores for nice houses. And most of them live at home still.

Planes, busses, taxis, hitchhiking, trains whatever. How can u afford this ? Saving money and working duuh. And yeah quit my job back in holland and never returning. But other then that fuck western way of living asians kick ass.

And i did not came here to fuck bitches. I came to find out where in asia i am going to live. I just visit temples, chill with locals/expats. Work wherever i can. And just enjoy the different cultures. Being a foreigner in these countries has a lot of benefits if u know how to use them and how to network the right people.

These are all of the reasons I was planning on Thailand. Specifically the access to good medcial, as the economy is growing i al lof SEA buoyed by China. I fully believe SEA has he greatest economic growth potential right now and want to get in on the ground floor. I reckon I never thought of Malaysia as anything more than a vacation spot. I did look at Singapore, and would live there for the right job. I also like the central location of Thailand and how you can get elsewhere quite easily and cheaply through BKK.

Both figuratively and literally, Malaysia always stuck me as between Thailand and SIngapore, though not better than either. I reckon it's a great compromise between the two.

I guess it really depends on what you are around. In Thailand I was with locals and long time expats, (young) people with Thai wives, and the like, wasn't in tourist spots are doing tourist things, so I didn't see any of that. I'm also not white myself, so that could have played a role.

In Malaysia I did the tourist thing, people were nice, and all, but it was just nice, but nothing that I saw would want to make me live there long term, over the alternatives,
>>
>>1090135
Yeah but housing money is going way up here. So getting a house here renting it out when u are away is so lucerative here. Plus around 20 dollars a plane ticket from kl to indonesia or anywhere near is worth the peace of mind not being somehwere where u can be found dead in a ditch at any time. Everything has its price though i guess. I do get u that malaysia is a bit less in everything. But still beats europe though.

I was in Siem Reap after being in SEA for about 6 months. I bought a fuck ton of opium in Laos and crossed over land into Cambodia. My daily routine was to wake up around 4, take 2 valium, chase the dragon out of a coke can I cut in half, and drink about a third of a bottle of jameson. I'd eat at the guesthouse I was staying at before I'd head out to prowl for women. I had about 50/50 success at night clubs picking up girls but sometimes I'd get too fucked up and end up getting a hooker. Place is so fucking seedy at night. One time I got jumped by 3 lady boys by the river and I had my cigarette case with 100 bucks in it pick pocketed. Didn't get AIDs but definitely bare backed/came inside a few girls. I reported the cigarette case theft to the police and they showed up at my guesthouse with 2 detectives and like 5 cops, they made a big show of it and I had a khmer girl in my room and all the cops were giving me thumbs up. I used to pull in Phnom Penh at heart of darkness but all of the girls always wanted me to give them like 50 bucks in the morning.
>>

>>
>>1090814

Everything is available like any where else in the world with right dollars.

Cambodia:
Local weed 1 dollar a gram
Xtc quite expensive 10 bucks a pill
Coke no idea for losers
Lsd if u find right guy 10 bucks a tab
Mdma cristals 35 dollars a gram
Shrooms hard to find.

Rest is for losers and thailand is dirt cheap and everything available in pharmacys without prescription or u buy it. But seems like amerifaggs are the only sad people in the world who do those things.

>>

You just come back? Do you think you'll be completely alienated from the Western culture after spending 6 months in SEA?

Im going to Vang Vieng early next year, just wanting to know what the situation is with tubing, bars, drugs and partying at the moment.

To be honest, im not a huge party freak and we are only there for 3 days, but its a place and experience i want to have, it sounds like real fun.

Everywhere i read its all pessimistic, though it is mainly RealTraveler™ types complaining about how everyone is drunk and how its not 'real' Laos... I mean, not every location has to be about seeing local culture, and for some reason some people just dont understand that.
>>
>>1091017
I can leave my job for up to 10 months and come back. Not everyone gets this lucky, but there are other possibilities.

Also, as mentioned above, not everyone wants to come back. You have to realize that not everyone feels the american (or just western) dream is a dream at all. Many people have the opportunity to live in a western country but choose not to.
>>
>>1091017
Why not, why cant u been enriching yourself with experiences while u where away. Aah unless u have a jew controled suck job. Yeah then not u are right
>>
>>1090876
It was really hard coming back home. Aside from the women, booze, and drugs I got in a really bad motorcycle accident in Laos and ended up having some significant memory problems for a few months after the accident and a lot of health problems. I finally saw an American doctor when I came back that said my leg was so full of infection I could have lost it or worse. 3 weeks back home and I'm playing golf drinking gin and tonics with my friends at a country club. Un-fucking-real. I have a trade so taking time to travel doesn't negatively impact my profession too much and I can always work for myself.
>>
>>1090307

I haven't been on /trv/ long enough to tell how serious on the meme scale this ranks.

Thailand was a great first trip for a travel baby like myself. You can see touristy shit, it's cheap and fun, and you can also find cool ass wats, cities, Thai junk if you stray from the main road even a little bit.

Come to think of it, do you guys divulge your cool spots on the interwebs? I'm torn
>>
>>1091246
I forgot to specify on "cool ass" but I meant places and experiences with only Thai people
>>
>>1091107
This. I am *strongly* considering saving up 75K over the next eight years (25K to keep in a Thai bank for a Thai retirement visa, 50K as a nest egg) and just going off the grid, sailing around the Indian ocean for the rest of my life, supplementing my income with odd jobs (lifetime practitioner of Muay Thai and divemaster certified).

The all-American rat race is fucking exhausting. Human beings weren't meant to live like this.

Any recommendations for hostels in bangkok? I'd imagine most hostels would be full of drunk expats, which sounds like it could be fun for a while but I'm sure I'd get sick of it after a month. Looking for quieter places, and especially ones that are cheap (though I'd be willing to compromise. i'll take cheap n loud over quiet and expensive any day).

>>1090127
Malaysia's great, the food is awesome, there are loads of great little bars scattered all over the place now, the people are generally friendly and easy to get on with and because they have industry not everyone is out to try and fleece you which is what I've found in Thailand and Vietnam.

The thing I like about Malaysia is people want to actually have a chat with you, in Thailand and Vietnam they just see you as a wallet, which is fine if you're after hookers but if you actually want to meet people and have a good time I'd say Malaysia's better than Thailand.

There are a few Taps beer bars around which I'd recommend as a good place to start nice mix of expats and locals with a good beer selection and live music.
>>
>>1090133
Agree with this anon, my experience is somewhat similar. Obvious still people trying to fleece you over in Malaysia but they're the dodgy types that you can spot a mile off, in Thailand it's pretty much everyone.
>>
>>1090814
One thing you need to get used to in Malaysia is there are three races, Malay, Chinese and Indian most people fall into one of these categories (also Bengali but you won't associate with them). There's a lot of racial tension and corruption too and the thing that shocks me the most is how much they drink and drive.

The Chinese are definitely dtf although sometimes there is a language barrier as they all natter in their own languages but mostly have reasonable English.

Same with the Malays although they are more religious and shit so can be a headache as they want marriage.

You don't do drugs in SEA unless you're an idiot, the penalties are too high.

Taylors is a pretty good uni my wife studied there.

Hey OP, what's the plan for the rest of your route? I'll be travelling in SEAsia soon, it would be good to meet.
>>
Which of the "mainstream" SEA countries is the best for a foreigner to rent a house for 30~90 days (depending on visa length, obviously)?
By mainstream I mean the most commonly visited by tourists (Thai, Philli, Vietnan, Indo, Malay, Camb) and by best I mean least hassle, least likely to be scammed and cheapest.

I second this. I'm an 18 yo exchange student in Malaysia form central Europe, been living here for 9 months already, got two more left. Fucked a dozen bitches easily just because I'm white and decent physique. Even muslim girls will throw their virginity at you, took the virginity of 3 muslims, even tho they said "I wanna wait until marriage."
bullshit man

The economy is growing, healthcare is just okay, compared to europe, but for sure as a westerner you can make a ton of money + my host family here are millionares.

And the food man. I suggest like everyone to go to Malaysia once in their lifetime mainly just for the food. I gained 8kgs in 3 months in Malaysia, then started exercising, and eating rice and meat all day got me bulked up af

Malaysia for the win guys
>>
>>1090124
how's the weed there btw? I smoked some here in Malaysia, not too much because it's not really effective or strong, maybe just because i was used to premium european weed as a daily smoker back then, but here weed just doesnt get me all hyped up anymore. I'm the same guy as the reply above btw

planning to go to Cambodia or Thailand this summer, and do all the drugs I didnt do in Malaysia. where should i go?

Alright, same guy few posts above who lived here for 9 months. Shah Alam, next to KL to be specific. I went to both a local high school with lmao babies, oldest girls were like 17 but still acted 12. Then also went to MSU for a while. Most people dtf there, but even highschool girls. When i got here I was also 17 and managed to fuck two 16 yo malay sluts. None of them were virgins already btw., and offered me drugs etc..
Then since december in MSU i fucked 5 girls, 1 indian 3 malay 1 chinese, plus also hooked up with 2 girls on tinder and 1 tranny.

Generally: College students are wild, and they will be mostly dtf, unless they are malay wearing hijab.

Indians: A bit hard to approach and super pretty since they are tamils and not masterrace northern indians so yeah. But they can be super nice and generally have awesome english, especially if they are not the subhuman shittier tamil-only speaking fucks who bring trouble. The open minded christian ones are the easiest to fuck.

Chinese: Generally have okay english, christian chinese usually have better english for some reason, idk, they dress very unproper, just because they are racist(like everyone else in malaysia) and they know malays cant wear mini skirts and shorts and crop tops, so they mostly just wear those for the sake of it. Easy to persuade, easy to get drunk, or if these doesnt work just lie to them that you love them and they will be down to fuck. But local chinese are not nearly as pretty as mainland chinese girls, and not even near masterrace Japanese or Korean. Just okay, nothing special. Ive been here for 9 months and havent found any 8.5/10 or above chinese

Malays: The ones with headscarf(Tudung/Hijab) are a bit harder to get but sometimes they just wear it to look alim(kinda means like "religious" in malay), or just wear it to hide that they actually dyed their hair. You cant get them drunk, but they are very easy to persuade with some sweet talk, some fake love, and a few dates.
cont

cont.

the malays without hijab are pretty, but people dont really like them so they can also be kinda insecure, but that also means they are generally more dtf, more down for drugs and alcohol etc.
Like the girls from my highschool, they wear hijab and long stuff in school, but they wear miniskirts outside, party, clubs, drugs, and fuck everyone. They told me they only fuck with their BFs after a few months, and both of them fucked like 3-4 guys before me, but with me and my glorious white skin they were both down to fuck the same night i took them out. Unfortunately not a threesome, but they did make out in front of me...

So yeah, if you have decent looks in Malaysia its not that hard to fuck... I probably could've done more but it was really hard since my host family is super alim malay family and I can't bring home anyone, so I had to turn down like 3-4 girls already because we had no place to fuck and she couldnt stay overnight in a hotel.

But the 3 races in malaysia are very racist. They generally dont like eachother that much or hangout with eachother, unless the religion is the same. Maybe christian indians and christian chinese hangout, but still not sooooo common.

I am planning on going on a trip next jan-apr,

Something like:

home -> Thailand -> Cambodia -> Vietnam -> laos -> thailand -> honk kong -> Guilin/ Li river -> Xian -> beijing -> seoul -> osaka -> kyoto -> nagoya -> tokyo -> home

I was thinking something like 2 weeks in japan, 2 weeks in korea, 4 weeks in china/hk, and then 2 months in SEA.

Is this doable or too much for 4 months?

I think its closed down to many deaths i went a few years ago with a ladyboy hotter than most gorls lol.
But just floated down the river bouncing between empty bars on the saides met up with a group of europeans also with inflatable tubes joined togethor and drank with them.
I guess theres still alcohol for sale if you count some old guy on a boat who comes and sells beer for a living i think.

There's a Taps off Changkat, and another at the base of Kiara One. Pretty sure it's Kiara One anyway, across from McDonalds in MK.
Pretty much saved me when I lived there. Not real cheap, but not outrageous considering what you normally pay for a shitty Tiger pint anyway.

If you're an expat, you need a duty free guy. My guy was called Kamal, and he was also a police detective.

Malaysia boleh.

Why would I do that when there's 30+ SE Asian restaurants in my flyover city in the middle of nowhere America?

In fact, I'm going to the one on the corner from my house now so I can hit on their waitresses(daughters).

I'm on a similar trip and in Myanmar now. Highly recommended but there is zero party scene and the local girls are impossible to hook up with (and paying for it is only feasible in Yangon). The few bars shut down at 10PM and there's not much of a hostel scene either.
>>

I'm from England... I'll keep monitoring this thread. I don't yet have a concrete plan. But I think I'll spend three weeks in Thailand in April, then Malaysia and Singapore for a total of three weeks, then Thailand again for a couple of days, then Cambodia for three weeks. Then I don't know. Maybe Laos, maybe Myanmar, maybe India, maybe China. Where are you originally from? And how much do you plan ahead in advance with stuff like visas, accommodation and vaccines? Sounds like you're having a fucking amazing time!

Guy on similar trip here. Apart from Philippines, KL is the easiest place I've found to get laid in the world. Also happens to be AirAsia's hub so it's often cheaper to do a layover there (and get laid) than it is to fly direct.

Plenty of Malay girls drink and don't care though. Just be aware that it's illegal for them to be in a hotel room with you, so don't be too brazen about it.

I was there in October, its still going, just toned down a lot.

You go to the rental place at 12/1ish and they'll take you up to the first bar where everybody plays drinking games and socialises for an hour or two before everybody goes down the river together.

There is like 2 minutes in the water between bars, they'll throw you a rope and pull you in. There is always something like volleyball, basketball or water sports going on at every bar so it's pretty fun

Just don't get carried away with your drinks, the buckets are deadly. You'll probably be encouraged by some of the bar staff to jump in on re-entry so you really don't want to be too drunk because it hits you really hard, trust me. It's fun as fuck, just take a dry bag, don't take more cash than you'll need and don't take your phone. There are about 4 bars and at the last one they'll get you a taxi to take you back to the rental place. They stopped selling mushroom shakes and stuff at the tubing bars, so if you were expecting it just neck one from a place in town before you go.

The Blue Lagoon is fairly small and my friends were disappointed with it, but I loved it. 3m and 7m tree to jump off into the pool with qt koreans cheering you on is pretty fun. Everybody goes to Sakura bar at night and then when it shuts there are clubs everybody goes to, just follow them down the main street.

Gorgeous place, find a nice spot by the river to smoke a spliff and just admire the river and mountains

The buckets are alcoholic mixers they sell at every bar down the river, very easy to get too drunk on them. Milan pizza on the main road where you'll more than likely get dropped off by the mini bus sells weed, shrooms and opium if you're interested

My best recommendation for wanting to live a lifestyle of travel is to learn to program. You can do your job anywhere in the world, and the work pays extremely well, as well as there being far more jobs than employees.

I currently earn 120k USD a year freelancing. I can, and do work anywhere in the world, and I am exempt from my countries taxes due to not permanently residing there. I am also exempt from the countries I work ins taxes, due to not being there long enough/working for a company from my country.

I am currently working/living in chiang mai, spending about 3k a month on an absolutely balling lifestyle. I get massages 5 days a week, live in a luxury apartment, have a maid come in 3 days a week, eat out 2-3 times every day, have 3 course meals 2-3 times a week. Before this I was in ho chi minh, prague, paris, vienna...

I am also only 24
>>
>>1094851
What's your job?

Programming or Design?

I'm a translator and I can only earn about 1000$ if I only take written translations. 2000-2500$ if I also work as an interpreter. But that requires me to stay at my country, although I'm DYING to start living somewhere far away and have a job that I could do anytime anywhere.

Teach me, anon.

I'm 23.
>>
>>1094851
>>1094878
Fuck me. I didn't see the first sentence correctly.

Anyway, how much time did it take you to learn how to program? I heard that you have to learn that shit from 16 or so. Otherwise - it's too late.
>>
>>1094878
>>1094880
It took me probably 4 years to get to where I am. You can easily go from 0 to decent job in 6 months.

if you just start I would reccomend doing a programming bootcamp, if you are good you can usually get a job straight after. Work domestically for a couple years, and work on building your skillset or specializing super hard. For free lancing generally web dev/mobile is easier to do(make me a website, make me an app), or you are pretty specialized in a language and fix all their shit.

When I was 20 and had no money because I was in school, I worked for a summer and saved money for a plane ticket to Japan and spent my summer (2 months) as a buddhist pilgrim getting free food and shelter while I walked from city to city.

You can do anything if you put your mind to it. You thinking you can't do it is what's stopping you. Just get a job, any job, and save up enough for a plane ticket (not hard, most people can do that in a month) and go. Force yourself to figure out the rest.
>>
>>1090133
Whenever people complain that the place they went was "too touristy" its because they were retards and only went to tourist traps. Don't just go to the places you've heard of. I was working 40-60 hour weeks for 5 years straight, starting right out of high school. I was making good money in union construction, pulling $45/hr. But man, one day it just hit me that 5 years of my life had gone by and I hadn't experienced shit. I was living the same day over and over again, 2 hours of traffic one-way, no free time or weekends. So I quit my job, sold literally all my shit, and bought a one-way ticket to Bangkok. Its been 3 1/2 months and ill probably be here for another 9 before going home. Hands down the decision I've ever made. Why should taking 4 months off, or even a full year, be a problem? Its your fucking life and you should choose to live it the way you see fit. Were you born on this earth this earth to work 40 hours a week and spend the VAST majority of your life slaving away at things you don't enjoy doing? No, I believe the only ferry is between Borneo so it's best to fly. I don't know anyone who has taken a ferry to the Philippines, you can take a cruise ship but of course those are more expensive.

The rest of SEA is connected by rail, bus, and ferry lines. Most people fly between Indonesia and Singapore/Malaysia but it's actually possible to take a ferry.

A so called leading economy of the world. A small country with endless luxury, clean streets, relative safety, amazing infrastructure. But for what price ?
Studying the locals all day, and have only seen stress, rushing, anoyance, obession with appereance/brands and i can count on one hand how many people smiled or looked me in the eyes today. Sad to see a former asian part of the world where cancerous concepts like capitalisme and materialisme have been adopted by the western side of the world.
What is that prestige worth when your whole life is revolving around the pressure to maintain that so called luxury ?

A good reminder why i left europe in the first place. This sad kind of slavery to a system/lifestyle. Although the food scene is good. It is a soulles metropolis of concrete and metal. The grass can even be less green on a bigger and more fertile lawn, quite funny.

Glad im only here for one more day, and then back to the loving embrace of Kuala lumpur.

I ask because I've never been to SEA and am planning a trip there this summer. I was thinking of flying in to Singapore and having a few days there to just explore before flying on to Vietnam, Philippines, etc.

>>
>>1099434
>And is it possible to drive around on a scooter without a lisence

Possible but if you injure a local you can get in real trouble or if you injure yourself badly enough your travel insurance won't cover it so it can end up costing you thousands. Not a likely worst case scenario but one worth considering before you decide whether it's worth it.

There's really not a lot of things to be said about KL. It's just a boring working city and there's honestly not much to be done.

If you're coming as an expat, look to rent an apartment in Ampang or Mont Kiara (preferably), where most of the expats live. It's not cheap but Mont Kiara's quite safe as well and there's good ammenities nearby. The only downside is that it's 20-30 minutes away from downtown compared to Ampang's 5 minutes.

As for the nightlife, Changkat's the only half decent place.

This is greatly exaggerated but true as well. About the LGBT people, there's a ton of lesbian couples everywhere but they're not muslim so no one cares.

Also, these cunts sometimes raid nightclubs in search of muslim people. Once when I was underage and completely drunk in a club and these guys raided, they didn't give a shit just because I'm not muslim.
>>
>>1101230
The original talk that brought up the religious police was hooking up with locals so the fact they don't fuck with non Muslims is almost irrelevant, as the point is it can make it difficult to pick up locals who are Muslim.

I wouldn't say it's exaggerated. The vids specifically say they only look for Muslims, they can't enter a hotel room unless you open the door, and they can't enter private residences.

The thing I find most fucked up is that the tips come from Malay Muslims telling on each other. Probably feels like living in a police state if you're Muslim there.
>>
>>1101230
Exaggerated in what way?
>>
>>1101237
Sharia law is a meme.

Also Malaysia's definitely not one of the worst places in the world for LGBT people just because of the large number of them.

>>1101236
>The thing I find most fucked up is that the tips come from Malay Muslims telling on each other. Probably feels like living in a police state if you're Muslim there.
Yeah that happens apparently. Thankfully my Malay friends are diplomats and have British accents so they're rarely ever stopped and can get out of this stuff.

The video is exaggerated to some extent but still kind of realistic.

I've heard stories of these guys reaching random people's private houses because of some complaints by neighbours and shit like that.
>>
Speaking for myself; I detect a large degree of bs.

Second, go to Indonesia by any way. One can travel to Indonesia via ferry, commercial transport, or fly. Get outside of Jarkarta and Bali, for each island is rather unique. Go east in Indonesia. Cheap. Don't forget Timor Leste.

I love Thailand, only the North. I avoid the south and Bangkok. Long beyond fucking katoeys and men. Interests: esoteric ma; healthy eating; enjoying the journey; and meditation.

Sharia law governs muslims. They can't bring a foreigner into the court.

Plus, if you're out on Changkat trying to fuck someone, they're probably Chinese anyway, and the god cops give zero fucks.

Malaysia's politics are a bit complex at the moment, the ruling party knows they won't get re-elected without the support of the far-right islamic parties. So they're doing things to show how islamic they are in order to win support.

Yeah, it's shit, but it really won't effect you unless you're Malay. I lived in KL for three years, and I'm here at the moment untuk libur

I'm thinking about going to SE Asia for a couple of weeks in the winter. I thought about maybe stopping over in HK for a few days and then hanging out in Bangkok and going through Cambodia (Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Sihanouksville)

I've never been outside of the US (outside of Canada and getting deployed). And while I'm smart enough not going to fall for obvious tourist scams, I'm a little apprehensive about going there for my first time, especially alone, but I want to go somewhere different that isn't some lame Sandals resort or whatever.

Should I maybe go to Europe first as that seems more of an easy mode for traveling as a white American who only speaks English?

How safe is it to do some unguided bike touring around SEA countries? Not necessarily inter-country, but in cities and around?
Is it easy to get a bike in, for example, Hanoi, Manila, Vang Vien or whatever, and just roam around?

Go to Thailand. It's the perfect starter Asia trip

18 yo American with $3K - where to?
>>

Awesome! What's the rent rate for the SEA countries? Do you remember?

KL is the easiest place I've ever gotten laid apart from the Philippines. There are a decent number of cute girls husband-hunting for white guys on Tinder that are very easy to fuck casually.

you can get them every where and they're dirt cheap

Interesting. How common is proficiency in English. Also are the girls more Thai or head-wobbler in looks?

Guys, I'm going to Da Nang, Vietnam soon and I'm wondering where them brothels at?!

Also, any thing in particular I should watch out for?

Any pointers would be appreciated
>>
Just to hijack off the previous question about bikes in SEA. I'm in Vietnam and finding myself frustratingly limited by lack of mobility so am considering renting a bike in the next place I go to (reasonably rural area, nothing too crazy) how easy will learning to use one be to pick up? And how common is it that fully manual bikes are the only option? I can drive a manual car but I feel like adding a clutch into the mix is making things more difficult for myself unecessarily

Also in general am I an idiot for wanting to do this with no license? I've met plenty of people so far who are in the same situation as me, first timers and so on and they've been fine but still.

What's opium like? I tried to get some in Vietnam from this bar in Sapa. The guy there give us a shitty little bit of something or other for $10, just to try it out. He said he'd give us more for like $20, enough to get us really fucked, but I think he was trying to scam us.
>>
Do low-fare airlines in Asian sell tickets for less than US$100? Or is this something that only European ones do?
I've checked a Bankgok->Saigon and Bangkok -> Phnom Penh and both are at least US$170.
>>
What's up with Laos? Is it good times and easy women there?

Pretty great. We tried to smoke it in a joint but really struggled to keep it lit and get the most out of it, even as 3 smokers, so we went for tea the day after and it was much better. Incredibly relaxing, it's kind of what I have always thought heroin would be like but a bit weaker. 5 hours seemed to pass very quickly. I think the visuals I had were from the shrooms

Go easy on the alcohol and any other downers

>>1109243
I can only speak for Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng. In Luang Prabang I encountered none and in Vang Vieng it was easy. Good times in both places, probably the highlight of my 6 weeks in SEA in terms of both natural beauty and fun

I got Bangkok > Singapore for £40/$50-60 and then some domestic flights in Thailand for much less than that.

When are you booking for?
>>
>>1089833
Hi. Im just thinking about doing the same thing. How much money do you spend in a month? And how do you get money while traveling?
>>
>>1109251

Hmm, I'm thinking the guy must've given us opium then.

I remember it was hard to keep the joint lit, and I did feel a bit calm and relaxed, and had some very minimal visuals. We must just not have had enough

I'm checking for November.
I checked AirAsia and a few flight aggregators.
All gave me US$170 or more for Thailand->Cambodia or Thailand->Vietnam.

I've travelled pretty much all over Cambodia. I can say thankyou in Khmer, that's about it.
There's always someone who can speak english.

Rural you might have trouble renting. But usually the guesthouses will help you out - it'll be an informal arrangement. Almost none of the scooters in Vietnam have a clutch, as such - they're almost all clutchless manuals. I got stopped only once in V by the cops for speeding... he didn't speak english, basically just waved to get me to slow down and pushed me on.
The only problem with being unlicenced is that you're probably uninsured, and only certain hospitals will accept foreigners. There was a law that hospitals needed government approval to work on foreigners, this might've changed by now but you should be aware. You want to make sure that if you get medi-vac'd, you're covered.

Try skyscanner. Certain routes are more expensive than others.
>>
Has someone here went around SEA with a camper? I'm kinda pulling shit out of my ass here, since I don't have a camper and I don't know what the expenses would be, but wouldn't it be cheaper? Also, you get to sleep at your own (tiny)place and not some hostel you have to be worried about getting stolen from.
>>
>>1109451
>cheaper
accommodation is probably the cheapest part of SEA travel, and given that you'd usually pay $10 for a ticket on a bus that'll use $60 of fuel on the trip, I can't see how you'd save any money at all
also the fear of theft is probably increased when you park literally anywhere
>>

You are looking somewhere else apprently. Flights in SEA are much cheaper than in Europe especially if you can't buy months in advance. If a flight in SEA costs more than $50 I would consider it expensive.
There are two countries where domestic flights are expensive (around $100 on average): Myanmar and Laos.
Cambodia has no domestic flights.
Vietnam: Saigon-Nha Trang is $20, Saigon-Hanoi around $50
Thailand: pretty much any local flight from Bangkok around $25-30
Malaysia: from $5 to $25 inside the same part of the country, $30-40 for flights between the peninsula and Borneo
Indonesia: more or less distance-based fare, on most routes it's about $20 per hour of flight time. So flying to Papua will cost more than $100 but it's very far away
Philippines: local flights cost $30 on average
Internationally it's usually expensive to fly to Laos and Cambodia, except from Kuala Lumpur. Flying to Myanmar is cheap. Main routes between Bangkok, Saigon, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore usually cost $30-50 even on short notice.

There are no brothels in Da Nang. In Vietnam, there are only four or five small towns where prostitutes are concentrated. None of them are famous tourist destinations, they're mostly for locals, but you can go there if you wish. One of them is near the city of Vinh IIRC.
>>
Going to visit family in the Philippines next year. Are there any other countries I can fly to from there for relatively cheap? I'm mostly interested in seeing cultural sites like Angkor Wat in Cambodia and the Great Wall in China. Highly photogenic areas like national parks and cities with interesting architecture are also being considered. Are there any other countries I should look into?
>>
>>1109467
>Cambodia has no domestic flights
You'd better tell Cambodia that, cos for some reason planes fly between PP and SR erry damn day
>Malaysia: from $5 to $25 inside the same part of the country, $30-40 for flights between the peninsula and Borneo
Oh, I see now. You're delusional.

I mean, if you're buying on sale, months in advance, then yes. But otherwise no.

How about no? Just checked skyscanner for flights for the day after tomorrow.
>You'd better tell Cambodia that, cos for some reason planes fly between PP and SR erry damn day
You're right about this though. Never ever heard about anyone actually using these flights, probably because they cost >$100 while the bus costs like $5, so few people would choose the flight.

Don't get dengue. Don't use tap water for anything.

In a scale of 1-10, where 1 is airport level with the country's passport in hand and 10 is impossiburu, how hard is it for foreigners to cross by train (read: by land, not by plane) between Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam?
