what do you do when you go to a new city? how do you have a fun time, especially by yourself?

I'm going to montreal soon. i was there a couple of months ago, and all i did was go to restaurants by myself and check out a few tourist spots (the park, notre dame cathedral and the bay area). it was interesting, but not "amazing".

what can i do this time around to have a better time?
i've looked and there's something called Igloofest during the winter. it's basically an electronic music concert. i've never been to one before, is it fun to go to these things by yourself (especially if you're shy and don't speak french)? what else should i try to do?

Big cities are easy when you're alone because you can always find your people. I live in Albuquerque, there's no such thing as a heavy metal bar here. I went to London and bar hopped and it was a great experience. I always used to hate bars with a passion, but then I went to some where I actually liked the music and everything changed.
Basically just search out whatever you're into. Anime, bicycles, BDSM, whatever. Find your people. You'll fit in instantly and have a great time.

i'm not really into anything.. i read books and watch movies in my free time

was thinking of going to the concert i mentioned just to have some story of something i did (other than work).
but it always feels awkward to me going places alone when you don't know anyone. everyone is with their group of friends and i'm just standing around..

If I was rich, maybe I would

Im looking at restaurants to try. Every place here is tiny and busy, and I feel like going alone is awkward. The restaurant managers are losing money and I'm taking up space for groups, plus other people notice the guy eating alone more

Check out couchsurfing and airbnb. See if you can find some younger people to stay with. They might be willing to do some stuff with you.

In big cities I usually plot out a couple of things I want to see then spend the rest of the day without a map walking in that general direction, stopping at things that look interesting. I try to avoid public transport unless something is really far away. I almost always stumble upon interesting things I wouldn't have known about and ask homeless people for directions in exchange for change. I also try to meet people in the hostel dorm which is the best place in my experience for meeting people, trying to stay in small hostels that don't take huge groups but more individual travellers.

Also I try to hit up the language nights at local bars, which is a great low pressure place to meet people who are there to talk to strangers and its easy to set up a meal or activity because they are very keen to practice their speaking skills.

Dude, it's easy mode. Everyone is high on ecstasy or m so it's easy to make friends. Just go get wasted, head over and if you're not autistic you'll meet people.

When they ask you why you're alone, tell them you like being alone and fucking own thst shit.

I feel you on the taking up space thing but that's why I type well. Bring a book to read while to eat. Honestly other people just try to empathize because they would feel weird alone but a lot of them get inspired when you own it and say you eat alone quite often. When they see it isn't a big deal to you, they realize it isn't. A lot of people invite me to join them when I'm out and sometimes they can't understand why I would decline. If I were an extrovert I'd take them up on their offer every time

OP, which weekend of Igloofest are you going? I'll be going so I can give you a shout if we're going the same weekend.

Also, check into a Hostel.

I was in one last week (even though I live close by, I just wanted to stay in the city) and I met like 3 groups of Chilean girls and we had a wicked time.

Also, check out ((Stereo)) if you get a chance.

Finally, you can ask to join the Montreal Rave group's facebook called "Front Rite" (I can't link it so just search it on Facebook), people there are super friendly and will hundred percent love to meet you and have a good time, as long as you're not some autistic faggit. Just post there, explain the situation and people will guaranteed help you out.

Enjoy your stay in MTL and good luck.

PS: Score some fucking MDMA or Coke for increased fun

Just today's igloofest.
Got there at 10:30, waited in line for half an hour. Then just walked around and listened to music. Had the jagermeister taffy thing and a few drinks.

It felt like an outdoor nightclub tbqh. People in their groups dancing together and hanging out together... I didnt do any drugs or talk to anyone...

Sucks to hear dude, join the Front Rite group I told you about and I'm sure you can find locals to meet and party with, I've made a decent amount of friends there.
