so I finally watched this movie and it was good (unlike some highly-praised kids' movie which are merely OK) but it's kind of wonky in places. The whole second half feels slightly rushed. Not enough to lack coherence but it's noticeable how quickly the Judy moping at home or the reconciliation with Nick scenes are over.

This especially strange as after the appropriately brisk prologue the movie slows way down for about 25 minutes. It's not dull but nothing happens in this stretch except Judy being down and dropping in stuff that's only important later, like the stolen planet bulbs.

Seems like it would have been easy to take five or ten minutes from this meandering section and expand the back end of the film...but maybe that wouldn't actually help. The story beats are pretty stock (antagonists thrown together, bond, part on bad terms, come back together, triumph and friendship confirmed) so maybe it's the very lubricating swiftness that kept me from being bored by the fact that I've seen it all before.

Gazelle shouldn't have been in the movie; was clearly there just to clumsily promote whatshername's music.

The film's true strength was in the details like facial expressions and body language. If there's a sequel (har har) I hope they let it expand into this area rather than doing another cliche cartoon plot.

Really the issue is trying to actually make her unique from Judy, which requires trying to expand on her character in ways that won't be universal. The whole sociopath thing completely contradicts her personality in the comics, the therapist shtick is ok I guess but a bit boring, and her being the rebound for Nick after forced Judy cheating situation is as shitty as the cheating itself.

I still think it is worth at least trying to do something with her; I am always up for people experimenting with Nick and Judy in relationships with other people as long as it doesn't involve cucking/cheating/abloobloo.

NickZelle is basically the same thing, if in some ways requires a bigger suspension of disbelief than him simply getting with the older sister of his best friend/partner. Most NickZelle has him knowing her from high school, possibly an old flame. I'd also like to say a word about the theme of prejudice and "racial" stereotyping; it's more sophisticated than I'd expect in a kids' or a Disney film where I wouldn't be surprised just to see "muh oppres'on" but it succeeds firstly by not being any kind of strict analogy (predators are not black people) and secondly by actually having some subtlety and complexity.

For a small example, the joke about "elephants never forget" was funny in its own context but also an argument about how stereotypes can distract from simply observing reality; that hippie guy went to the elephant because of the saying instead of trying to answer the question himself because of the saying about elephant's memories.

The most obvious piece of complexity is how Judy is both victim (as a small mammal) and perpetrator (against predators and foxes specifically) of prejudice what I really liked is how in the early parts of the film she's fussy about speech (she chides Clawhauser for calling her "cute") and Nick is "insensitive" throughout (calls her "carrots" and "fluff", plays with Bellweather's wool, complains about wolves howling) but it's she, not him, who has the real problem with accepting people for who they really are. That's outright a criticism of the PC focus on "politeness" instead of individual substance.

See also how at the end they are both playing with "racist" terms like "dumb bunny" and "sly fox" instead of allowing themselves to be worried by them.

A neat term with the rams at the end of the movie. It is a cliche to use predators for thugs in animal-people movies but the rams were very successfully made quite threatening.

Here's some that I like for the most part.

These are some of my favorites also. (They are still flawed though.)

"When Instinct Falls" -Ongoing- 470k words. Less total overarching plot, and more cut up in arcs with a driving force/villain in each one and conclusion to it. Does get a bit grimderp at places though.

"Safe Paws" -Ongoing- Nearly 200k. Friendship based but with romance in recent chapters. Judy does some seriuos work to show Nick how much she cares about him. The driving force is more them getting close instead of a villain or such. (Sadly the author loves to tell and show. along with showing then telling. And how we are privy to everyone thoughts at all times. It's annoying.)

"A Bunny CAN go Savage" -Ongoing- 360k. Romance, and a highly dependent Judy. (For story reasons) They try and work around their new life together. Sadly Trisha seems to have taken it over and I gave up on it once she showed up. (No idea if it got better or not.)

"Always my Sly Bunny, Always my Dumb Fox" -Completed- 324k. Friendship at first, Romance later. The case itself was pretty enjoyably within it. That and the BB arc was one of the better ones I have read before.

"Embrace It" -Ongoing- 240k SavageNick and him controlling it. The case and psycho killer is pretty entertaining and it looks like it's picking up soon.

"Quid Pro Quo" and it's sequel "The Greatest Gift is You" -Both Complete- Total 310k or so. Friendship. Really. Just take my word for it. The lengths that Nick goes through to change his life around is fucking amazing.

Last one, but it might not be what you are looking for.
"Fallout: Zootopia" by CiderStripes. (Only one here that you can only find. I think. On Ao3 instead of FF.) -Completed- 566k. But it's OC driven. (for understandable reasons) I personally enjoy them but they are really flawed at the same time.
