While it does suck that they character locked the riding/vehicle and boss levels, you CAN play as her in all the regular run n jump levels. Which is odd, because they both have animations for riding a little animal, I wouldn't think it would be THAT hard, and I wouldn't think the motorcycle and jetski animations would be that different.

However, from what I've heard in all the press releases, it sounds like the decision to make Coco playable came relatively late in development. So I think it's mostly that they don't have time to make new models for Coco in scuba or motorcycle gear, or to animate all the death animations from those levels. Not that the hazards or death animations on the great wall of china or jetski levels were anything to write home about, but the same thing applies to Crash as well.

So it's POSSIBLE, and the optimist in me is still holding out hope for this because we know they're going to make DLC, that once it's finished they'll do the requisite work and patch in the ability to play as both characters on every level. But, the cynic in me knows that they won't.

Apparently you can now still get the gem in a level even if you die. And all the boxes you've collected before a checkpoint remain collected when you die. Basically they've implemented the mechanics of crash 2/3 to make the first part easier. I'd prefer it if they actually added a "hard mode" option to make c2/3 behave like c1 when it comes to gems.
