Sometimes it's not so fun being relatable. New Jersey has some towns like this, to different degrees. I'm glad my town's not dying, but everyone's moving out and everyone's looking to the neighboring towns for anything else. We even used to have an abandoned aluminum polishing plant. I once encountered a town sort of like that when I was roadtripping with some friends, the kind of road trip where you literally take random turns and just rely on your GPS to take you back. It was a town called Bushkill, I think somewhere in PA, where we were deep in the woods for miles, only buildings we saw were abandoned spaced like a half mile apart, an unpaved undertravelled trail into the woods with a sign that said "Bushkill General Store" or something, but the trail was so deep you couldn't see the end. The only building we could interact with was a convenience store where we asked the lady what there was in Bushkill and picked up a brochure about the coming Wurst Festival, a celebration of German culture and sausages. A kid holding an apple stared at us for our entire visit in the store. The lady said that there was a Native American museum along the way, which we encountered, but was paid admission, and a water park that wasn't open yet.

Isn't that the point? That everyone is still just a kid despite, and sometimes in-spite of, their responsibilities. Bea is dour and sarcastic but loses it over people getting squirted by a fountain and Mae being covered in fireflies. Germ is full of child like wonder at the most seemingly random things. Even the adults are depicted as being "childish". Throughout the entire game Candy makes references to the the "eeels" conversation and almost every one of her conversations has her being witty with Mae.

First off, that's a very analytical response to someone's silly post.

But I dunno if I'd say every character is portrayed as some arrested-development adult. At least, not to the extent Mae is. Her parents have a silly sense of humor, but they generally keep their responsibilities as serious priorities in their lives. Greg is maybe the closest thing to another immature 20-something in the game, but he at least has plans for the future and a job.

Mae, on the other hand, displays very little insight into the consequences of her actions and impulsiveness. She doesn't consider how dropping out of college impacts her family financially, or how she's going to survive if her parents can't support her, or what will happen to her future if she gets injured/arrested from any of the blatant crimes she brags about.

A lot of it depends on how you define "adulthood" and "acting childish", though. Mae's mother's humor (and to a lesser extent, Bea's) is goofy, but I don't see it as childlike.

I think that is ultimately how the game differentiates it. They've found a way to balance their "childlike" natures with the adult world.

In Mae's case I think it is directly related to her mental illness. In the case of college I think it is very likely that she knew that it was expensive, but the full impact was unknown since they had hid just how much so from her. I think her recklessness stems from a degree of self-loathing. I mean after suffering a brain injury she decides to confront the cult alone, an action that can only be described as suicidal. She puts a strange amount of effort into stretching the smallest off-hand remark, like in the "Choke on my Entire Ass" scene or when she is talking about the phone in the bus stop. Like she's trying to distract herself in order to prevent herself from allowing her thoughts to settle and potentially trigger an episode.

Poor writing and not having a good enough plan for the game to start with and clearly just winging it once they realized how hard an actual video game is to make.

Hotline Miami is a good example of worthwhile gameplay and a real, if difficult to follow, story that was actually planned out. It was also made by two whole people with some help from musicians and friends so it's not like you need a massive dev team to get shit done.

It's kinda ambiguous if any of that happened, especially from the perspective of Mae's buddies.

Mae is the only one who sees or experiences supernatural stuff. It's possible that it was just a hallucination/delusion. She might have a mild form of schizophrenia, which can especially become noticeable when people reach their early 20's.

It's true that the town does have a murder cult that worships a hole in the ground, but there's no great evidence that they aren't just desperate full-of-shit rednecks.

And assuming all the supernatural stuff is true, even then it's not clear if they're in any immediate danger. The vague warnings from Not God could be about the inevitable of death for people in general, or the inevitable death of the sun, etc.

The fact that it goes for a cold and uncaring universe, while having "gods" and implying that the big G doesn't exist while simultaneously having a character, in the form of the Janitor, whom is the embodiment of a trope that implies he is in fact God. It's kind of a muddled mess.

I think the point is that there's all sorts of interpretations of god, and people all handle the 'idea' of god in their own way. Like, The Janitor's supposed to be the god that's Caring but Absent, uninvolved, since a caring god would have to be in order for the world to be in its current state. Mae herself comes to terms with the idea that she doesn't really believe in god anymore, and sometimes that's how it be.

There is a bizarre moment where Mae calls Pastor K a liar for having doubts and in doing so it makes a weirdly definitive statement. It treats the idea of faith that is not unshakeable and unwavering is just you lying to yourself and everyone else. That's the impression I got. Mae technically isn't an atheist, she just believes that God doesn't give a fuck. That's different from Angus, who doesn't seem to believe in anything supernatural, which is different from Bea, who is skeptical but wants to believe, who is different from Pastor K, who admits the intensity of her faith fluctuates, etc.

Ey! I got no clue what art program you're using to do these, or if you're using a tablet at all, but I would really suggest using skeletons if you're going to be making quick sketches and freehand isn't working for you. Using them helps a LOT when you're trying to keep someone from mushing into a pile of drawing putty, and they're pretty simple too. Just create a layer with a lighter color, then draw on top of it with a darker color one layer above. Thicker outlines might help you a bit as well, or turning up the "correction" in your program.

Thanks for the tip. I'm using Paint tool Sai with a tablet. I actually do use a basic skeleton(ie: a circle and two lines) to get the basic shape of what I want and then free hand the rest of it. It's worked for some sketches I've draw(that I won't post because they're not related to NitW) that I wanted to put some effort into. I think it's based on a style sort of thing and how you like to draw.

I think one of the issues here is that your curves in the skeleton are very flat, along with the snout being more of a 2D shape than a 3D shape. Making your skeleton lines curve out more helps with the idea of working with a 3D shape.

I do the linework first, then a flat color on a layer below the linework, then a layer of shading between those two. The shading layer is done a reduced opacity so that it has more of a...cel-shaded effect, I guess?
Anyway, this is a quick Mae sketch I did as an example. Hope this helps! Everything on the bottom row is related to shading and the final product is the top right.

I really adored the sound design. Minimalist, with a lot of variety in what they chose to include. Not everything has a sound, which is a very good thing.
I'm not that hot on the music, but it's rarely overbearing anyway.

Personally I really enjoyed how the music swells, then dies down during Proximity. It's a very well done scene.

(I also enjoyed the fact that the PS4 controller rumbles ever so slightly when Mae lands)
