Presumably because if he had a great childhood and strong parental figure he wouldn't have ended up a hustler and associating with known criminals who tried to murder him.

In the original concept he was a pretty normal run of the mill fox in most regards. In the current version he was a criminal. He had to go down the criminal path for some reason, and it doesn't look like it was drugs. Just poor guidance and jadedness stemming from his childhood. Thus, no father figure to look up to as what to be instead.

That is not true, there are plenty of examples of nice parents not being able to steer a child into the right direction. Nick had a very hard emotional trauma, that if he was not willing to speak of with his parents, they were not able to help him. "do not let them see that they get to you". Nick decided to hide his pain, probably even from his own parents. He still finished high school according to Rich Moore, so he probalby wasn't a bad kid, he just started doing bad stuff in secret, and if he probably never was caught.

Just started reading https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12329732/Guardian-Blue-Season-1 and I discovered it had a prequel and a sequel.
It's a slow-burn WildeHopps with good imagery, and an enjoyable story. It adds in some story-specific 'fox traditions' but doesn't make them primary focus, but something that matters here and there.
It's got plenty of innuendo that isn't just thrown in, and it's rated T.
My only beef are the occasional typos, but given the story itself flowed well, they were easily ignored.

I thing I enjoy the most about the Guardian Blue series is how it never gives into the normal, stupid tropes usually found in most fics. Any miscommunication is understandable and handled civilly. Jack Savage is not used as a plot device, and doesn't conflict with Judy's position as the first bunny officer. The humor is great, the family drama never goes over the top, the abloo abloo that does happen fits with the story, and Nick is competent while being his snarky self.

tl;dr

Guy lives with his best male friend, dates a girl he met in college for 6 years.

Male friend is obsessed with her, tries to get with her even when she's with Guy.

Girl decides to marry a middle aged widower and leave Guy because Male friend is a major creeper. She doesn't tell Guy because it would emotionally cripple him to learn his Best friend has been trying to cuck him for so long.

Guy tries to find a New Girl, he loves her but has really been using her to fill the hole left by Girl, to the point that he's never made an attempt to actually get to know who New Girl is.

Widower lost his previous wife because he wanted to have a baby; lost both. He's initially okay with Girl doing her own thing because their marriage is just obligatory. He starts to fall in love with Girl and almost has his vasectomy reversed when Girl tells him she's pregnant.

Turns out the "married woman" that Best Friend has been seeing through the whole story is actually Girl, who despises him because she had to leave Guy who she wound up truly loving. In an attempt to finally get him to leave her alone, she sleeps with him, and gets pregnant with his child.

Girl asks Widower for a divorce and he's left with heartbreak. New Girl leaves Guy after Girl tells her the situation. Girl & Guy wind up back together, with Guy raising the child in spite of the fact that (former) Best Friend is really the father.
