I think it's just for the art style more than anything else. Mixed couples don't exist because the game doesn't actually differentiate, it's just that having mixed families would raise more questions than provide answers. I think it is another case of the writers not being aware of the subtext of what they wrote, because that happens a lot. There is a lot of subtext in the game and a lot of it is contradictory, and the amount of times the writers have said "I never thought of it that way" in response to fan interpretations leads me to believe they are simply not aware of a lot of the game's subtext, with the aesthetic, the stuff about religion, the cult, all of that stuff.

Even though they didn't intend it that way however, doesn't stop me from reading it that way. Text is meant to be read, and just because the author didn't intend it a certain way shouldn't stop people from reading it that way.

The fact the writing is so bad is part of what fascinates me about NITW. I want to know why the stuff that worked worked, and why the stuff that didn't didn't. I even read Catcher in the Rye and played Life is Strange for some perspective. Basically the game is about people whoa re being failed by society and are being left behind by the economy. Or at least they feel that way. There is a lot of commentary on the job market but it never goes past. "This sucks. Here is why it sucks." which is not exactly deep. I think the most interesting statements the game makes are the ones about mental health, but even then it feels like most of that is happening off screen and it can't even manage a simple "Take care of yourself" message.

I'm not really sure it was trying to say anything though. With all the cut content and how the game was originally described in the kickstarter, it seems like this was supposed to be a legitimate supernatural adventure game but the devs weren't good enough to make a real game, so they decided to scrap that and go with a visual novel and expand more on a narrative that wasn't really supposed to be very important initially.

I have a feeling the dream sequences are probably left over from an earlier draft of the plot, as they serve no practical purpose in the game as it is now, other than the closest the game gets to having platforming challenges, and they aren't hard, just annoying.

Maybe if Mae did have supernatural powers, the giant animals at the end would have unlocked new abilities for her, which would have given the dreams an actual purpose instead of them just being filler.

"At the end of everything hold on to anything" are kind of arc words for NITW, and it sounds deep, but what it basically means is "If there is even one thing keeping you from totally going off the deep end and going crazy or killing yourself, then that is worth living for."

It is a philosophy Albert Camus would be proud of, but doesn't really fit in with the game as Mae is never suicidal. Considering it was part of the kickstarter campaign it might have had some kind of significance to an older version of the game, or maybe Mae considers dropping out of college to be like the end of her life and she actually does feel like she is going crazy and only her friends can keep her grounded in reality. That would fit with her disassociation, but she never really seems to be going off the deep end in the game we got.

Here is another interesting thing I found on Scot Bensons Curious Cat.

tldr: With the amount of content they cut during the development process it is a miracle there is so little left of it in the final game, like the germ scene among others. Also anything that was cut was cut for a reason and should not be considered canon.

Personally I find the thing that gives crossdressers and trans people away the most is the voice.

Not that Bombshell would be trans in this context, but the point still stands. I have met some trans people who are so convincing that you wouldn't know, and some that are less convincing, and also some people who arn't trans but crossdress because they like it, and no matter how convincing they are the moment they speak it is a dead giveaway. It is nearly impossible to make your voice sound like the voice of the opposite sex unless you are trans and use hormone blockers and transition before puberty hits, but most people don't do that, so unless Bombshell is a very vocally talented Mae probably wouldn't fall for it.

Mae apparently had hundreds of voice lines and vocalisations recorded back when the game was considered to be voiced, but eventually they decided there was so much dialogue in the game and so many characters it would have been too much. One thing I quite liked about NITW was what little we saw of Gregg and Angus's relationship. Relationships in media are super common, but most of the time it is either the beginning of a relationship, or a "Will they or won't they" and it ends as soon as they start the relationship.

I liked how the game started with them already in a relationship and kind of explored the experience and hardship of actually having a relationship, the codependency and issues they had and the fact that maybe it wasn't going to work out. I thought that was more interesting than the relationship starting during the game, of course they could easily have done more with it.

The fact it is a same sex relationship is a slight bonus to me since that is even rarer, but I would have liked it if it was opposite sex too as it was pretty well handled either way.
