Grats on the purchase fellow gundambro. I'm still working my way through my backlog. Mainly focused on the Heavy-Arms and similar Variants that use assault cannons as their primary weapon.

My favorite I've built is the Kampfer, because nothing screams Gundam like having the most (at the time, maybe that's changed) runners and having a motherfucking whip made of landmines.

Well pretty much you have a huge variety of ideas to choose from. I'd stick to the 1/144 scale or 1/100 scale size models and probably the "High Grade" or HG models to get started. Most of these will simply snap together when cut from the sprue. (I'd get a good pair of modeling/plastic pliers to help with cutting the parts.)

As to get an idea of what types you like, you can always look at the gundams from the popular Gundam Wing that toonami was showing back in the day. Those gundams give you a variety of styles that you can sort of identify what you like.

Keep in mind there's like a shit-ton more series and variants available. Basically browse a gundam site like linked here: >>9273215
or hell even amazon has a bunch (though at slightly more elevated prices) and see what tickles your fancy.

Most don't need any special tools aside from modeling clippers and maybe a plastic file to remove flash and studs.

The tricky bit would be not making Jaune too much of a shy nervous idiot and making Ren something because he hasn't gotten a lot of details in the show.

The guitar bit could be the main source for Jaune as a romantic except toned down and kind of refined because he got a talking to about being more of himself.

It's less that he has a type and more that he actually believed that Weiss thought he was cute based on a sarcastic comment she made to Ruby back in Volume 1. Since after hearing that is the first time he makes a pass at her.
