Indeed, I'm talking about IWS Judy, though. I assume canon Judy isn't trying to reach the top anymore, from her experience with the speech, the case and her resignation/return giving her a wide idea of what was important to her. I read some fics where she's actually just happy she was taken back, Bogo wanting her back due to her enthusiasm and even helping her go upwards. She on the other hand has some worries of ever making it and her speech and overall 'contribution' to Bellwether case being a black mark on her records, even if just to herself.

My problem with that interpretation is that it undermines a lot of what made Judy likable. Maybe this could happen where she wonders the decision she makes because someone points out she's the hope of smaller mammals, but not something she herself comes with. Herself coming with it goes from "Make the world a better place" to "Reach the top", no matter the reasons is a pretty sad way to see her going. I could see her interested on it for said reasons, but not at the cost of who she, at least by the movie, was. Going from someone who bet her whole career on a case, on a city she didn't knew, on a case she had no lead, without any solid information and without even the help of a single mammal, to someone that would instantly do anything if it meant gaining status and ranks but is absolutely horrified by the thought of anything that could hamper that, is more of a sad AU than JiD.

On that open relationship thought though, saw a crack fic that still annoyed me because it had rabbit polygamy. Basically, "rabbit customs" have it so that the male must find a friend that he thinks is better than him, have the friend throw him roses, and they both ask out the doe at the same time. The doe is then free to choose between them, usually dating both. Nick chooses Finnick as his "better friend", both ask out Judy, and while she doesn't have feelings for Finnick, she feels she owes him a date for breaking fox traditions.

Dunno, I don't mean "don't make it serious". It can definitely be something serious but making it "they are forced into the situation" rather than "they enjoy the situation and there's a reason why" is much more interesting and easier to write. You can make Judy Jack Nick absolutely hated if you make Nick brooding about Jack or Judy only adding him due to culture/babies, but you can also make Nick wanting to comfort a Jack who he came to love, maybe more than just as a friend and a Judy that also loves loves Jack for another genuine reason and bam you have barely anyone mad about it and rather more people saying "just fuck already". I don't have any problem with it unless they completely ignore obvious problem that situation would have, but I have a problem with people glossing over details with pretty much everything, so that can't be helped.

It was just a train wreck, and I do admit I feel super salty since I got so invested in Fluent. That song chapter (while super cheesy) was pretty awesome. The chapter where Judy tells off all her siblings when they try and set her up with other bucks, even when she was with Nick, was amazing and hilarious.

I always remember when WildBurr tried to back pedal and say that they "didn't think Fluent through, so it didn't make sense when Jack was introduced." And saying that they weren't pleased with their writing nor how they made it. (Which is complete bullshit, they were SO fucking happy that people loved Fluent. And they were giddy and so GLAD when people loved that "Judy shows that Nick is better" chapter)

There's actually two fics that are pretty much the perfect examples of both sides of this.

One one side we have Eloquence, which goes against literally its entire prequel story and suddenly drops that Nick can't possibly satisfy Judy alone, and that all rabbits share their wives because apparently it's impossible for a single mammal to satisfy a rabbit female, and somehow Judy neglected to mention this until after Nick was mated for life with her. The story is/was gonna be something like Jack moving in with them both and fucking Judy so Nick and Judy could have kids but also fooling around with Nick a bit even though he's mated for life. Basically just a huge clusterfuck.

On the other is Hare of the Fox which starts off kind of weird with Jack revealing that he was involved to some extent with Nick's dad, but a large part of the story it about how Jack's spy work has left him pretty socially retarded, so Nick and Judy help him sort of integrate into civilian life and put down roots for the first time in his life. Judy and Jack aren't interested in each other romantically, and end up considering each other family, but they're both interested in Nick who in return is interested in both of them back. Jack concedes that he will never hold the number one spot in Nick's life but if willing to share him and "date them as a couple." In the most recent chapter Jack has laid out to Nick that he's interested, and is willing to share if Judy is; if she isn't, he'll step back, and if she turns Nick down entirely Jack will date him anyway, but then leaves it in Nick's hands to ask Judy out and discuss the situation with her.

What ever happened to Wildbur and the Warmbloods author? They both wrote great stories but vanished without a single goodbye.

I'm not saying foxes aren't monogamous, but they aren't one and done creatures. They can, and often do, take more than one mate over their lifetimes, just usually not at the same time. As I understand it polygamy among rabbits is usually just one dominant buck taking several mates, so if you wanted to be completely accurate, it actually wouldn't be weird for Stu to have several wives but Judy wanting to sleep around while in a relationship still would be.

Lions used to have one male leading a pride and. Males used to kill all the kits that didn't belong to them.

It becomes more and more common to have multiple males sharing a pride and I think it's because lions start to become aware of it that their numbers are declining and become less... competative.

Remember the famous lion the dentist killed, Cecil? Cecil's younger brother took over the pride and according to the reports, it did not kill Cecil's cubs.

Yeah, after some googling, it looks like they are just like any other animal.

In any case, I'm pretty sure humans didn't gravitate towards monogamy before evolving into homo sapiens, so why should equally evolved animals retain their ancient primal mating habits? I'd just stick to them being like humans in that regard.

That is basically how it goes in nature; the dominate male, who has the best genes, has rights to breeding. This ensures that the next generation is better suited towards survival.

However, I doubt this habit would progress into civilization, where gene superiority isn't as focused on as much as wealth and skill, both that come hand in hand with sapience.

I agree on the mammals eventually evolving to be closer to human as the time went on.

That said, I still enjoy the thought of there being different dynamics for different mammals, not necessarily ABLOO BLOO BLOO fuel. I enjoy something like Pack Street or how some fics depict Wolves having a natural coordination with each other that some species cannot grasp. I think sexually could be nice to explore as long as it was the same level of something they find culturally interesting but not necessarily a requirement or impossible to avoid.

Having different dynamics for different mammals is definitely nice; we still see that some Zootopians keep certain aspects of their ancestors. Wolves still like to howl, most mammals can still easily revert to walking on all fours almost as natural as walking on two, etc. Mating habits should be a thing that, while similar to humans in certain aspects, should also be unique to each species.

This chapter of Falke's "Together with Eyes Undimmed" is a good example of that, where the got the prompt from trash;
