I didn't feel that the human character was very interesting, though. He felt a bit like a kingpin self-insert from a fanfic.
(Though I suppose it might be my reacting to him being unrealistically portrayed; I know a whole lot about people like that irl, and they're the absolute worst kind of human beings you can find. Across the board. No matter where you are in the world. The funny thing is, people have always romanticized people like this--and probably always will.)

Would be interesting to see a character like Paige slowly develop a relationship with a more starkly different (perhaps "weaker") character, over a long time.

You should never think like this when writing. Whenever your brain pitches a narrative idea that you feel like going with, let it grow naturally to its full length, without any external constraints. Artificially constraining the story often leads to it feeling unnatural and awkward, since you're "pruning" it. (I.e. "pruning" something that seemed good to your brain by merit of not being pruned.) By writing it out fully, you're subconsciously fleshing out the story according to your mental narratological image, which will make it more consistent.
(This really isn't always the case, but good practice. If you must abridge something, do it afterwards by revising.)
Anyway, we rarely have time to write things out fully, but it's a thought.
