The atmosphere in this ep seems really good from what we've seen. If I have one critque about current SU pacing it's that there's not as much slower moments as there used to be. Mostly because the story's advanced to the point where they've just gotta get on with stuff, but Topaz's appearance at Funland was great. More like that would be good.

It's not really a plot twist, but the fact Steven's nutting up and going to Homeworld on his own is a pretty big shake up even if he'll arrive back on Earth eventually.

People like to criticize SU for keeping the "Status Quo", but the character development is usually handled well outside of the usual exceptions and really sticks.

To be honest, I like the fact that SU maintains its status quo to a certain extent. It really builds up the mysterious tone of the show and desperately makes you want more, which is glorious yet painful at the same time. Luckily, it pays off, but patience is required with the crappy schedules. Best example is Greg suddenly getting abducted with no prior foreshadowing, launching into an arc about the gems going into Homeworld. That was excellent in shattering the status quo.

Like you said, it doesn't even need to be a plot twist, just something to shake things up. The current arc seems really interesting though. New mysterious gems, and humans getting abducted. Can't wait to see where this goes.

the brilliant thing about enemy gems of the week is that, technically its still a status quo. The gems still live their lifes and steven hangs out in beach city. BUT now the conflict comes from gems AKA the thing we all want to see over townie shit.
You could have an episode about ronaldo getting kidnapped as hostage and him analyzing gem ships and finding out cool stuff.

you could have a lars episode where a gem mind controls the whole town into killing the CGS and the only humans saved are him and steven(like a zombie episode).

you could have an onion episode where he reigns over tiny gems and causes mayhem.

you could have a cool kids episode where they face enemy gems in a music band contest.
not to mention you could do any character development for the CGS at the same time as they are fighting enemies.

aqua is just very...simple. can't work with it too much.

Topaz was easy to acclimatize too, but Aqua is unlike any Gem we've seen up until this point. It all hinges on her personality, actions and lines. Topaz doesn't have to worry about that because she's the strong, silent type.
