I wonder what kind of shitposts we'll get this time around!

If their situations were reversed, and Mae's mom died in high-school instead of Bea's, what do you think would have happened? Mae would have been able to "man up" like Bea did, and I'm not sure if Mae's dad would be able to keep them afloat with just a deli clerk's wages. The Santellos weren't rich, but owning your own business would bring in more money than what was likely a slightly-above-minimum wage job.

I think it's less about "right bad, left good", and more about the futility of trying to preserve something that's slowly going to naturally die anyways.

I grew up in a really similar situation, before I moved. Small town out in west Texas that was slowly losing its youth to El Paso. There were always people talking about how we need to reclaim the good ol' days and not let people from the outside ruin our town. There was this constant sense of community illusion among the parents and older folk that some anomalous outside force was working to dismante all the good things we had going.

But there wasn't. El Paso wasn't trying to destroy us. President Bill wasn't trying to ruin our job integrity. It makes you feel safer when you entertain those thoughts, because it means that there's always a big bad that's responsible, and when that big bad disappears, all the money and jobs and people will come flowing back like water. But they didn't, and they won't.

There's an old saying that you're not a conservative until you find something that you want to conserve. As good as it is to have people around you to tell you "keep changing things to make them better", conservatism is there to tell you "don't change what's already good". But when the world around you is breaking apart and the good is going away faster and faster every day, you start to blame the people that want change for taking away the good. But the good was already changing on its own. No one was forcing it to.

I think that's why this story hits so hard for me. Because I grew up in a place where people were trying to conserve things that couldn't be conserved, and all the stress and anguish tied in with the struggle turned a lot of nice, good folk into bitter hearts that blamed the world for a town that was dying a natural death.

Conservetism isn't bad. But you can't conserve what's already gone.

This is happening to the US in general. There's a huge push to bring coal jobs back, but the market for coal is much smaller than it used to be. Automation is going to decimate the job market unless we dramatically reform society or make it illegal, both of which would be extremely difficult and harmful. Global alliances are breaking up, weather events are threatening to cause shortages of goods like coffee, and people on both sides are taking political issues too far. Side stories revolving around a sepcific character obviously. The main story is done. This can be stuff after the end of the game and each DLC focuses on Mae and one other character. A DLC for second meeting with bombshell is such an obvious one, as for the rest I wouldn't be se sure what else. Lori got enough in the main story so I doubt she would get more content. Some side characters like video store Doe and Dona are too background NPCish to be given stories (sadly) only other characters I can think of that make sense are Jackie and Cole.
