There's a weird, like, mass-transference thingus that happens. Only works on Pokemon, but basically the Pokeball marks 'chu so that 'chu're registered with that ball. Means 'chu can get recalled from pretty far out.
If 'chu ever wanna cut and run from a Trainer, 'chu probably should either snatch or break the ball.

Attacking the trainer is a real good way to get tracked down by Rangers until caugh or worse.
You will need the trainer to release you somehow or tamper with the registration system, as merely crushing the pokeball after catch is not enough.

Pokeballs implant a chip at the spinal cord. Breaking one yourself would be near impossible, especially for the higher grade Pokeballs. However, you could get one surgically removed or rewrite the data on the chip. The former would require you to trust a human long enough for the procedure and would leave you open for capture again, the latter would require you to learn coding and would make being captured again impossible.
Pokeballs have a failsafe that causes the ball to release the Pokémon should the ball begin to face serious issues. I'm not certain if that can be triggered from inside the ball, but damaging the ball when outside of it could cause a minor issue that will eventually get to that point.
