I'm a little sad that they've missed the point of my stories but it's whatever, you can't win them all. I think that cherrypicking passages like that without context isn't really fair and I'm curious as to whether or not they read the whole thing, or even if they read more than that one story.

Most of the flak I get is just from having an interpretation of the character that's so far from canon, and I don't really get why that's such an issue. Canon Undyne is great but I wanted to expand on her, I don't get what the problem is there? Maybe I haven't done a good job of it but all I've wanted to do was flesh Undyne out into a real multidimensional character, which you kind of but don't really get in the game. I think that if you get to the core of the Undyne I'm writing it's still the same Undyne. Just my two cents. Now I suppose you'll take a screenshot of this and go and post it back in /utg/, right?

Anyway, people can like whatever they like and it doesn't matter to me. I just wish they'd talked to me about it rather than complaining on twitter where I can't even read it or know about it if you hadn't posted. That just makes me think that they're complaining just to complain rather than out of love for the character or anything. I have an email for a reason and I would absolutely love to talk about my writing with somebody, even if it's just so they can criticize it. I can't get better if nobody gives me feedback.

Their main issue was that the stories altered Undyne's character to be a perfect, reassurance-needing waifu for the male self-insert character. (and they obviously didn't like what the Christmas story did to Alphys' character.) They also didn't like the use of autist in your bio page.

I believe what the writefag has said in the past is that they felt that Undyne was too flat a character to base 100+ stories on. Personally I think that's probably true unless they want to write the same thing every single story. They've also tossed the phrase 'an older mellower Undyne' around a lot and I can definitely see that.

She always seemed like a younger, less confidant Undyne to me.
The game Undyne's personality is obviously exaggerated and hammy for humor purposes, but I never got the impression that she wasn't dimensional. If you toned her down a bit I think she'd be a believable person.

I think I've talked about this a little in the past, but I can give you a bit of the rationale behind the changes I made. I started with the fact that I wanted to do a realistic take on Undyne, rather than staying with the hammy stuff that you see in the game, like you mentioned, and I agree that you have to tone her down to do that. So, we come to a series of choices - what are Undyne's basic characteristics? She's brave, loyal, strong, confident, but also a little awkward at times, and so on. What I decided would be the most interesting way to proceed would be thinking of an Undyne who uses that confident, brusque persona as a sort of protective device, so she doesn't have to deal with whatever worries or doubts or insecurities she has, so she can just grin really wide and fearless and drop her voice a few octaves deeper and suddenly she's not the same person any more, she has an escape. I remember thinking that it'd be completely exhausting to act like that all the time, and I thought there was an opportunity for some really compelling writing by digging into Undyne's worries and insecurities, so that's what I went for. I agree that the first stories were rough, but that was because I didn't know how much I wanted to do, I didn't know what the reception would be like, I didn't really know how I wanted the character to work out, and so those first stories were really just sort of getting a feel for Undyne and seeing what people liked and what they didn't like and seeing what sort of reception I got.

I can totally understand not liking that, but that's just my thought process - I wanted to look at something with the character that, to my knowledge, nobody had really done before, and I wasn't really concerned with how close to canon I kept her. You can see those two personalities I'm talking about especially well if you compare stories with 'you' to stories with Brill or Alphys or Fuku and Octavia (cont'd)

...if you look at the stories with 'you,' you're totally right that Undyne is a little more unsure of herself and a little less confident, and the reason for that is that she'd gotten comfortable enough around 'you' to not put on that strong persona all the time. On the flip side, with Brill and Alphys and so on, she's commanding and brusque and everything because she never lets that persona slip around them, because even though she plays it off as this devil-may-care bad girl attitude, she's still just guarded and she doesn't want to look weak or stupid.

What I was trying to do was create a more realistic Undyne; I think that if you tone her down she's still pretty flat, and I figured that what I ended up doing would give her another layer of depth. You might disagree with that but that was just my thought process. It's not like I'm trying to improve on Undyne or anything like that, that's stupid, I love Undyne because of her personality, but I got the distinct feeling that you don't see every single side of it during the game, and I wanted to dig into my interpretation of what those other sides could be. It's just an extended series of 'what if?' questions that converged around what I thought would make an interesting character. Sure, it might not have been necessary, but I don't see any reason to stick that closely to canon - I think that as long as the character is recognizable, it's kosher, and whenever I read fanfiction the stuff that interests me the most is the stuff that really goes wild with the characters.

Okay, I'm genuinely not trying to start any drama, but I heard about this thread from /utg/ and I thought I'd come check it out since I love Undyne, but I heard some really sketchy things about you guys like hating Alphys or whatever and going and shopping her out of images and harrassing artists or whatever. And then there's the whole Undyne writefag thing which just creeps me out, it seems really weird that he's trying to turn her into his perfect waifu or whatever. So I guess my question is...is this thread any good? Is there any truth to that stuff? Because I'd really like a place to hang out and collect fish images but if there's this toxic atmosphere like people always say I think I'll give it a miss.

None of that is true at all, it mostly comes from a known shitposter spreading misinformation trying to stir up trouble, and it make me really sad that it seems to be working. The thread has never harassed artists for drawing Alphyne (I, personally, would be furious if someone did) and you can see images with Alphys in them being posted in this very thread. The writeanon does so much Undyne x reader because they almost exclusively do requests, and that is what people ask for, you can try requesting an Alphyne story from them or read one of their very nice Alphyne stories that they've already written in their pastebin, if that is what you prefer. This is a great thread to collect and post Undyne images, (there are some collection and links to archives of previous threads in the op), and I hope that you'll at least lurk for a bit to see the thread isn't so bad.

I think it came from a couple of things, one being how much Undyne x reader, they've written, another being that in one story Alphys tries to break up Undyne and the reader and seems like kind of a villain, and another being quotes from them trying to explain how Undyne and Alphys breaking up could be plausible in that continuity. The writeanon definitely doesn't hate Alphys, they frequently post Alphyne images and they even intended to end their series of Undyne stories with Undyne and Alphys getting married.

The writeanon tries to tie most of their stories into a single continuity but they usually stand alone pretty well. Generally it would be best to read them in chronological order, but there's nothing wrong with skipping ones you aren't interested in. The AU seems to be that the monsters were never trapped underground and exist peacefully alongside humans, but it's never a huge focus.
They've also been reposting their stories on ao3 with tags and writer's notes and stuff, if that's of interest.

Don't tell anyone but different length arms are actually very common in my drawings. It's a terrible habit of mine. I usually notice afterwards. Keep it a secret though. I don't want the others to find out.

(Her wrist is at the edge of the hat so it's not that big of a difference in length. Her bicep is the same length even though it looks different. Most people don't notice these things)

No I haven't written any comics. I did write a green text story about Mettaton in /utg/ once that was pretty gay but it wasn't porn really. It got surprisingly many (you)'s for being so simple.
