I'm nearly in the same place. Sparkplug arc was fantastic but Marx consistently is an awful addition to what is otherwise an interesting setting and story. Things like the Milk Trial or Linda's introduction were also good, pretty much anything that didn't focus so much on character relationships but the world and how the characters explore and react to it.

I think I stay around for the following:
>Setting
>Lore
>seeing Mallard again
>seeing Petey and his car waifu again
>seeing Al and Gustine again
>seeing Linda again
>seeing ANYTHING about Jackrabbit or his administration after Milk Trial

I'm losing hope though. The Topsiders are now outrageously OP, more than they were at the start.

>nearly impenetrable suit
>weapons don't work for mutants normally
>plasticized brains can be tracked now
>bunker buster bombs
>weapons cause instant death
>the satellite

The Dittos are ridiculous and only exist now to offset the shithole dug by the narrative making Topsiders nearly impossible to handle. Its a shame because Dittos were very interesting before Marx showed up because they seemed malevolent and were actively torturing Sparkplug. The insistence they only replayed memories and were not solid lasted until post Unity where they gained more abilities as the plot demanded.
>>

>The insistence they only replayed memories and were not solid lasted until post Unity where they gained more abilities as the plot demanded.
When Albert first met them they were making all sorts of illusions and solid hollow constructs, what are you talking about? What they could pull off after Unity was simply due to being great in number and commanded by an engineer.

I wonder, how often is the romance here going to be front-and-center? Are we due for two pages of lead-up and aftermath each time?

What's especially weird is that we've already had a romantic sequence from which Walt was implied to gain more self-respect only a little while ago, now it looks like Aaron might be about to do it again...
>>
>>8858610

They are gonna go to bed and fuck, in the middle of the night, the wolf dude who said was gonna get even with Portia is gonna pull some shit, maybe break in Walt's place. Walt's gonna enter in a rage and kill him, this will get him in prison.

Calling it...

You can say what you will about him, but he had some fun stuff and when Jamil inked his drawings it looks pretty good.

>>8872401
Yeah I get that feeling too, but I don't think he'll get prison for killing someone who's breaking into his house, but still he'll feel awful about it.
>>
>>8872401
Think Portia will end up dead in the fight? Maybe even accidentally dying by Walt's hand, or appearing to? She doesn't have much to her character so far besides "Friendly pig girl with body issues"
>>
>>8872724

Doubt she's die, but without Walt to protect her, she's gonna be in deep shit.

I kind of hope we're not headed for another court sequence. One was enough, I'd rather this arc play out like a mystery novel or similar.
>>
>>8873187

So underrated, she needs more art.
>>
>>8873653

I agree, but unfortunately.. this is most likely the case, specially with the introduction of Denise.
>>
Holy shit, this thread is depressing. You're even being nostalgic about KC. Anyone who says we're just seeing slows days is in denial.
>>
>>8873978
I think one or two people are being nostalgic about him; personally, I always preferred Jamil, Kazen and Pen Anon's work. Their stuff always seems more... I dunno, alive.
>>
>>8862341
>pretty much anything that didn't focus so much on character relationships but the world and how the characters explore and react to it
It must be awful for you since Aaron (and almost everyone else) cares more about the former. I like how Gustine's arc a good balance between those two.
>>

>Jamil, Kazen and Pen Anon

They are all great, it's nice to see PA and Kazen are still sticking around.
>>
>>8874063

Random thought of the day: The mutant healing power and the dittos may be intended to eventually give a semblance of full cartoon powers to the anthros. What if the mutant healing increases with one's acceptance of one's condition? Wally certainly recovers more quickly and cleanly from blows to the head post-self-acceptance than he did before he and Holly's little talk. So perhaps anthro children, knowing nothing else, would have even greater regenerative abilities. Meanwhile, dittos let would you:

>appear to stand on thin air
>appear to walk through a wall
>disappear from sight
>appear to move a hole
>form exaggerated limbs and other temporary deformities
>form a shadow-clone of yourself
...etc
>>
>>8882019
This is really interesting but I can't ignore how you went full narutard in the end.
>>
>>8882057
Funnily enough, I don't even watch that. It just felt like the right term. That probably makes it worse.

Doppleganger, perhaps?
>>
>>8882094
Yes, that's a better term. You could also just call it a copy.
>>
>>8882019
Holy shit plz no. Marx and dittos are retarded enough.
>>
>>8882369
Hey, I didn't say I liked the idea. Just something that seemed possible.

Perhaps it was the intent earlier in the strip's existence, when it was a little lighter-hearted and less serious, but now the dittos and the healing factor are only a nod in the direction of some of the strip's inspirations?
>>
>>8882481
I looks like it was going for something meta but now it seems like Aaron is just doing whatever he feels like doing at the moment. Like, I bet we were never going to see Portia again after she ran away from Walt and the wolves but then Aaron pictured her getting home and went "I totally want to draw that but I need an excuse" then he came up with the call and so on.
>>
>>8882800
On the "meta" side of things, I did wonder if Marx's little double-sequence at the end of the last arc was pointing towards a big reveal later in the story that Marx, being aware that he's in a comic, is doing everything he does, and messing with things to the degree that he does, simply in an attempt to create a gripping read, an effort to sustain his "universe" and the god that created it via ad-money and Patreon donations.
>>
>>8883339
I've suspected as much too. If you've seen Aaron's description of "I" it really seems like he is just saying that bad things happen because he makes it so and he is the real villian of the comic.
>>
>>8883442
So Marx is wrangling plot twists to try and "improve" the story while "I" attempts to invoke tragedy for the same reason, and their motives are the same but their methods are in conflict?

Marx as the "What a Tweest!" side of Aaron, and "I" as the "Stories Need Suffering" side?

>>

>>>/co/91730145
>>
>>8890226
why though
>>
>>8890018
I have to wonder how much of this storyline is influenced by some Americans' well-known "wolves are vicious vermin" viewpoint? We've seen one nice wolf and a bunch of asshole wolves, it's starting to feel a bit Redwall.
>>
>>8890812
Why wolves tho. How many are there, is something like fifty percent of Endtown's population wolves and a huge chunk of the rest pigs?
>>
>>8891003
>a huge chunk of the rest pigs?
Not anymore.
>>
>>8889928

I think he's been doing it out of spite, He's been constantly requesting chic shota in the drawthread. Good thing no one's taking the bait.
>>
>>8891075
I do like that request of Chic slipping off Kirbee's back while she's flying then grabbin' her pants and pulling them down.. until Chic gets a boner.
>>
>>8891120

the chic fucking Kirbee one is fucking awful, though.
>>
>>8891162
Obviously.
>>
>>8890812
Actually, that makes me wonder... how many character traits connected to American animal stereotypes have gone completely unnoticed by international readers?

Jim, as an example. It's implied he ransacks the transporter they're in due to his new "Raccoon gotta steal" instincts, yet I believe that, for instance, the German stereotype for Raccoons is "Raccoon gotta wash food", so that might have been missed entirely.

Finally found this:

>The Crooked World (Doctor Who) Paperback – June, 2002

>The people of the Crooked World lead an idyllic existence. Take Streaky Bacon, for example. This jovial farmer wants nothing more from life than a huge blunderbuss, with which he can blast away at his crop-stealing nemesis. And then there's Angel Falls, a racing driver with a string of victories to her name. Sure, her trusted guardian might occasionally put on a mask and menace her for her prize money, but that's just life, right? And for Jasper the cat, nothing could be more pleasant than a nice, long nap in his kitchen -- so long as that darn mouse doesn't jam his tail into the plug socket again. But somebody is about to shatter all those lives. Somebody is about to change everything -- and it's possible that no one on the Crooked World will ever be happy again. The Doctor's TARDIS is about to arrive. And when it does... That's all folks!

Doctor Who, with cartoonish anthro characters dealing with really heavy shit because of him. I knew Endtown reminded me of something from years ago, I just couldn't place the feeling...
>>
>>8895323
Isn't the Doctor all about helping people? Why is he the source of problems in that?
>>
>>8895524
It's been years, but I think his presence more or less breaks their reality. Suddenly people don't get up and dust the ash off of themselves after being shot with a gun any more, they just die. That kind of thing.

The blurb doesn't mention it, but there's a sheriff dog main character too, as well as the Porky/Elmer combo piggy farmer, the cat and the mouse.
>>
>>8895690

This. Allie is still great but she doesn't get to the silliness and tragic levels that Sparkplug does.
>>
>>8896392
I guess that must be before Aaron came up with the "beams are sheathed in plasma" idea. If that were the case he'd still burn hell out of his head and the beam wouldn't be coherent when it came out the other side.
>>
Actually, Jim is somewhat the best thing that happened to the comic on /co/ since he brought the most attention when Sarah cheated on him and when he schism'd.
>>
>>8896500
That's for modern Zero Guns, Sparkplug has a prototype made by himself.
>>
>>8896590
Yeah, but wouldn't the point of such a prototype be to test those very technologies that made Zero Guns small and man-portable?

Come to think of it... would it be using a slice of plasticised brain? Was that in the prototype stages then, too, or did Sparkplug come up with an alternate processing system?
>>
>>8896725
He's Sam "Sparkplug" Sanders. If he could turn people immune to Amesworth Radiation you bet he can make a perfectly working Zero Gun in more ways than the "correct" one. It's implied Topsiders make things extra destructive anyway (it's the Neitherland way) so the plasma beam might just be for overkill.
>>
>>8895960
>>8896004
>>
>>8896918
I was just wondering if Sparkplug was responsible for the brain plasticisation tech, too...

This all reminds me that I've always wondered if the never-human rats were the result of an Apex experiment to engineer a species with compact brains for use in smaller zero-radiation machinery. I could see Mallard being involved, and bringing them to Endtown with him. He used to be in charge of them before Flask, after all.

Jensen, actually...
>>
>>8899191
That's actually canon, according to Aaron.
>>
>>8899211
That sounds even more Germanic, to me, but I could be wrong.
>>
>>8899231

I still don't get why Aaron's so inclined to portray Jim as a bad guy or a generally terrible person, it's literally the opposite in the comic... Yeah, he might have been a dick to Wally and he may have just used wally for the dittos. But still, he only did it to save Sarah.
>>
>>8899301
Remember that the original storyline for the Unity arc would have had him sane and functional right up until the end, where they would have escaped and he would have gone back for Sarah and gotten eaten.

Perhaps a lot of his characterization time got cut? Mind you, that would still be on Aaron...

Do you think the fact that anthros no longer look human makes it easier for them to dehumanize each other?
>>
>>8924699
Yes, they've forgotten they were all human before. I wonder how the TMs are dealing with this.
>>
>>8925232
Theory: Anthro-ness is unique to this iteration of Endtown.

Marx added it to try and remove the tribalism factor by making everyone look totally different, but groups have ended up forming anyway and it actually makes it easier for mutants to disregard each others' humanity.

Marx fucked up and is only just beginning to realise it; cross-reference his remarks on Doc not behaving as he has in every other iteration so far - this is because even Doc places less value on his fellow Endtowners than he would otherwise, and the isolation this induces causes him to place even greater value on Holly as family.

The mutation is implied to be caused by "God"/I/Eye. And I think that when Marx said "Doc always has" he was simply talking about how he did things up to now, not about the many versions of him.

Also, if Marx only wanted to turn people into cartoon animals, why is there a higher chance to turn into a horror?
>>
>>8937039
My idea was that in the other universes, it had always just been Horror vs Typhoid Mary. Remember that glimpse "sideways" we saw in Wally's vision, with the female Marx leading human riders against those red goop things implied to be "Eye's" final form or something of that nature? I don't think we saw anthros then, did we?

Marx tweaked things so that some TMs would mutate into animal people this time around, possibly co-opting whatever "Eye" was using.

>And I think that when Marx said "Doc always has" he was simply talking about how he did things up to now, not about the many versions of him.
It's the Oracle (apparently) saying Doc "didn't respond as he has before", and we've never seen Marx interact with Doc before, so I'd say it's referring to the temporally iterative nature of Endtown, which has been hinted at repeatedly, and suggesting that last time around Doc was more accepting of the loss of Holly. The fact that it is iterative, and they're worried, suggests that it's unusual for an iteration - Marx even calls it a "bad omen".

I feel like Dottie's going to get involved here, soon. Probably with an extremely unsubtle message about the wolves not treating her any differently to goat-cop despite her implied defences of their species in the paper (which we haven't seen a single actual example of, so we're still kind of without context there).

And that's totally an attempt at humor by Aaron, and they're right, it does feel weird in the middle of all this...

Wow. Someone in /co/ is critiquing the comic with comics now.
>>
>>8955585
Makes me think... it's past time we had a proper wolf-viewpoint character, but I guess that wouldn't fit the narrative Aaron's going for, as it'd make the wolves too sympathetic. Which is kind of odd considering said narrative is apparently at least partially about how bad bias born of discarding perspective is, but whatever.
>>
>>8956996
I'd like to know what's up with that smug pig woman from earlier. We see her show up in what seems to be the wolves defense at the start of this, after Dottie calls the two out for being absolute morons in provoking Portia and chasing her down the street. This was an 'opposing viewpoint' moment that was established early but is summarily trashed by the following pages afterwards.

Ever since Heather has gained focus the narrative is all about how awful the wolves are and that everyone hating on them is deserved, which is really a lame black/white thing to focus on when it was introduced as morally grey. It's really disinteresting and loses the mystique of what was going on and if there was something deeper at play.

It also makes for shit discussion which was the lifeblood of Endtown threads.

Yeah, where is he going with Dottie? She seemed to have a handle on things before and was perfectly capable of seeing the wolves as idiots when they were behaving as such, while being willing to treat them as human beings, but now she's biased?

In my experience the kind of bias she's implied to be suffering from is usually the province of ivory-tower commentators who are insulated from the issues by distance and/or location. Dottie on the other hand lives pretty much in the thick of the problem, so it doesn't seem like she'd be unaware of the reality, especially since every single other person we've seen seems to be.

It's another thing which makes it feel like Aaron is just pushing an Important Message really hard and has chosen Dottie as the vessel, instead of just letting things flow naturally.

It also feels like the story has become a slave to another one of the Important Messages Aaron is trying to push, when before they were worked in as a side thing and it was all about the characters.

>It also makes for shit discussion which was the lifeblood of Endtown threads.
It's a little too inviting to a certain brand of poster, I know that much.

Things *are* happening, though. I think part of the problem is that the ending to the last arc sapped a hell of a lot of enthusiasm for the comic while that and the things Aaron said made it near-impossible for a lot of people to get properly invested in the characters.
