I heard that you can buy the books directly from Aaron and he'll put a doodle in it. Does he still do that?
>>
>>8719613

Funny enough, I tried purchasing a book from him couple weeks back but he ran out of books. You can only get them from Amazon or Jarlidium for now, or you can wait until he orders a new batch. That might take a while though, given all his late expenses.
>>
>>8719675

You can still ask him, though.

Second book is specially worth it, it has a small bonus Walt mini side story of him fishing which is kinda cute.

sorry for the potato quality.

Good to know. I bought the first book off of Amazon and have been wanting to get the others.
>>8719699
If I want to order from him do I just contact him through e-mail?
>>

Yeah, just hit him up and ask if he has any books available. He's really nice and will reply you as soon as he gets a chance.

>>
>>8719887
Huh. Just my opinion, but I think Endtown works better like this - horizontal and with adjustable panels.
>>
>>8720916
I'd like it if it was 6 horizontal panels even if it had to update only twice a week.

>>8720916

Well, endtown is sort of like a news paper comic. I personally don't have an issue with the layout, I just wish there was more than just 4 panels. I understand though, why Aaron approaches it this way, He used to update on a daily basis.
>>
>>8721005
>image
MIND = BLOWN
>>
>>8720989
Yes, I feel like sometimes he has to stretch things to fit in four panels and sometimes he has to chop things up uncomfortably. A horizontal layout would also help there because he could adjust panel widths to fit ideas.

>>8721005
I think dropping the four-in-a-square thing would allow for panel variations as in the bonus comic above, though, which is what a lot of newspaper comics do anyway.

And as your example shows, he's *thinking* in terms of a strip of panels instead of a square of panels, so it's actually kind of mystifying why he formats it the way he does.
>>
>>8721127

I think it all comes down to his update schedule. Like i said, he used to update on a daily basis, so it makes sense for him to keep the panel count low, since he was gonna be releasing updates constantly. This worked perfectly fine, until his illness kicked in and almost killed him. Getting updates Daily was absolutely amazing, those were wonderful times.
>>
>>8721239
Yes, but is there really that much difference if the strip has the same basic area, though? It's the same amount of stuff to draw, he could just move the gutters as he saw fit to have one panel wider and another shorter, or subdivide into multiple narrower panels, or whatever. He could even do a wide shot in one large panel, though I feel like >>8721005 would have kept the gutters for the "time slicing" effect anyway...

For clarity, I'm not arguing for the strip to be larger, just horizontal.
>>
>>8721295
>For clarity, I'm not arguing for the strip to be larger, just horizontal.

Oh, well nvm then... I really don't know why Aaron chose this route, but if I had to bet, it might have had something to do with where the comic was being hosted when it started. I assume he decided to keep the layout since he's been using it for so long.

Also, pretty much every single comic Aaron has worked on uses a horizontal layout like the one you describe. I am pretty sure that it was not exactly his call.
>>
>>8721359
Interesting. So it might be force of habit now, then?

I wonder if it was originally something Modern Tales mandated? Maybe they could only host comics yay-wide due to their page design or something? It's certainly a head-scratcher...
>>
>>8721417
>So it might be force of habit now, then?

That's where my money's at. I will ask him, see what he has to say.
>>
>>8721417

I already wrote him an email with some more questions, I will let you know if he replies.
>>
>>8722174
That would be appreciated, thank you.
>>
That reminds me, what happened to the monthly reports?
>>
>>8722369
Could it be that we're not getting them because there are no longer any /co/ patrons? Or perhaps there simply aren't enough emails to make a report long enough to be worth sending out, lately. Could also be that he's simply busy. Times seem tough for him at the moment.

Anyone want to make some guesses as to who we'll be seeing in Walt's flashback? I'm assuming we're about to hit one.

Though with how frequently personal histories are explained through flashbacks in this comic, it'd also be kind of funny if he made it look like we were about to see one and then had events in the comic interrupt Walt just as he was going "It all started when-"...
>>

Jacob.

Maybe Al and Gustine (and Hank Stillwater?)

>>8750338
Looks like Aaron's all flashbacked out. Probably disappointing to some, but refreshing to others. I guess a flashback now would added another jump to an already jumpy narrative.

I'd say this is quite possibly foreshadowing anti-predator stuff being thrown at Walt, if the fact he went full-bear on a proto-Topsider is well known to some.
>>

Assuming he knew. But then maybe that was one of the rumours. I wonder if it grew in the telling?

Or maybe it's about to do so...

I feel like the comic has crossed a line somewhere in the last arc where it can't go back to this kind of humour without it feeling strange, and that it had been heading in that direction for a while.

More like the last perfectly good arc. The only times the writing felt weak before was Marx but to be fair, at least everything else around him still managed to be good.

I'd say the non-Marx parts of the rocket arc are my personal fave. Milk trial was good, but I remember thinking it was a bit slow towards the end (and the ending was disappointing). The Linda and Holly bits were great, though.

Random thoughts:

Now that there are outsiders aware of previously hidden elements of the Pig Plot, some of them may have to be "disappeared" by the perpetrators. We might soon be due for the first non-pig "suicide", complete with note.

Likewise, the perps may be running out of patience re: Portia. She may disappear, leaving a note, rendering Walt immediately suspicious because she definitely had something to live for. Actually, this would be a good reason/way to pair up Walt and Dottie again while giving them both the motivation and a lead to solve the mystery.

I wonder if we'll see someone making a pun based on "suicide" and "suidae", the name for the pig family?

New strip.
>>
>>8811953
I wonder who came up with that plan and had the authority to get everyone into it. And why didn't they think it would backfire? They all saw that Walt got out of control because he was drunk and angry, if he is constantly drunk the next time he got angry it would be the same. Maybe they thought the booze would slowly kill him, not knowing that mutants heal quickly, and hoped he would die before he got that angry again. Poor Walt, no wonder he had no confidence in himself.
>>
>>8811953
Honestly, that just sounds like he was schisming, having trouble integrating and sublimating his new bear instincts. Kind of feel like this is a tweak to the character, too, not something that was foreshadowed (for one thing, he didn't seem to panic about becoming a monster when Dottie knocked his bottle away and told him to be a mayor, only about the responsibility).

And this really doesn't explain why only fifty were saved of a hundred people, or how they got to Endtown.

>>8812824
Yeah, he'd already proved himself an angry drunk... it doesn't feel very well thought out, either on the instigators' part, or possibly on Aaron's.
>>

I think that's definitely happening here and there in this arc. Instead of making a new character for something, Aaron just bends an old one out of shape. Fitting the characters around the plot, rather than the plot around the characters. We might also be seeing an in-progress case of him darkening something that was originally intended to be lighter or even funny - "narrative red pills", as he puts it. The rats are next, perhaps.

I think it probably would have worked better if Walt had accidentally beared a hole in a holding cell, then found that the scared people with him would do anything the big, funny-looking, "heroic" bear-man said, simply because they assumed he knew what he was doing, and then he surprised himself by managing to do the right things to get them out of Pep and away to safety.

It certainly would have squared better with his character as demonstrated, and with the whole "they picked him as their leader" thing - for one thing, why would a someone whose entire reputation boils down to "terrifyingly violent drunk" be a good election candidate, one who would get supporters? And why would people listen to him at all when he left the comfort of the bottle if the entirety of his heroism and leadership was tearing a guy's throat out?
>>
>>8813323
And why would the guy who'd succumbed to his animal side and torn a guy's throat out (and since that was apparently his one, single accomplishment you just know that had to be part of the rumours) be chosen by the people who were on the opposite side to Jacob "Embrace the Beast Within" Jackrabbit?

I still get this feeling that Jacob is a red herring. His whole "Embrace the Beast Within" stance is mainly about killing Topsiders. The lop-eared bastard's whole character is about hating Topsiders and wanting to go to war with them, and it's really hard to fight a war when your potential forces are killing each other about who is delicious and who's not.
>>
>>8815184
That could certainly be said to be his earlier characterisation, but I think around the milk trial he just got retooled into a powermonger who was using that sentiment as a stepping stone to his ultimate goal of total control of Endtown. He certainly took a mild upgrade to his courage and a major one to his wits.

>I don't know. I feel like Jacob was always a powermongering guy even when he was in the first arc.
I think his original characterisation fit "idiot ideologue hack writer" better and the powermonger stuff came in the milk trial arc, when he was suddenly no longer an angry newspaper hack who had a mild talent for rhetoric and he became a master orator and social manipulator.

>The reason Jacob has a boost to his courage is because he has a Dr. Who knock off on his side that can eat missiles. I'd be a cocky bastard too if I had that card up my sleeve.
While that is true, it's less about being cocky for me and more about that time Jacob fainted clean away. I would think there'd be sufficient undercurrent of latent doubt in the extremely fickle Marx when facing down a bunch of bullets that at the very least he wouldn't have been quite that cocky, pre-retool.

>>8815857
Sounds to me more like he knows Jacob's going to have actual responsibility dumped in his lap and he's going to either find he's actually got the solutions to problems (just not the ones Jacob thought he could toss out while he enjoyed ruling) or the reality of rule is going to trigger a total character inversion and turn him into a very different person, who just happens to be a good leader.

Or, possibly, it's in a different sense, and he's going to be, say, the leader who proves to Endtowners that they shouldn't have singular leaders, or whatever.

Going back and looking at it I think you're right that.
I would think there'd be sufficient undercurrent of latent doubt in the extremely fickle Marx when facing down a bunch of bullets that at the very least he wouldn't have been quite that cocky, pre-retool.
I think Jacob doesn't know about Marx's personality or at least what we were exposed to on the ship. I think Jacob thought he just allied himself with god who's goal aligned with his own.

Jacob being totally overwhelmed by the responsibly he's been given seem way better in the context. And on the same note I'd totally love to see Jacob become a totally different person and become the leader that Endtown needs.
>>
>>8816382
>I think Jacob doesn't know about Marx's personality or at least what we were exposed to on the ship. I think Jacob thought he just allied himself with god who's goal aligned with his own.
True again. He could have been floating high on power-by-association, which makes me wonder if he came down from that high as soon as Marx literally disappeared.

(Incidentally, given what we've been shown about dittos, am I alone in now thinking that Marx probably just made himself invisible with dittos, there, waited until nobody was paying attention any more, then very quietly tip-toed out of the room?)

>Jacob being totally overwhelmed by the responsibly he's been given seem way better in the context. And on the same note I'd totally love to see Jacob become a totally different person and become the leader that Endtown needs.
It's always fun when a bad guy reforms in a totally believable manner, or when the guy you thought was the enemy turns out to no longer be one. Also fun is the whole "Be careful what you wish for" thing when applied to villains getting what they want.

People still read this? After it was brutally confirmed what a hack writer this guy was?
>>
>>8840994
Fewer and fewer all the time, it seems. The people left are generally more critical of the comic these days, I've noticed.
>>
has the arc with wally, holly, and kirby ended yet?

i like to binge read comics and arcs are good stopping points
>>
>>8841240
Ended around December.
>>
>>8841240
Yep, getting into the meat of this next arc right now though so if you binge it again you'll be wanting more.
>>
>>8840994
>After it was brutally confirmed what a hack writer this guy was?
Elaborate, please.
>>
>>8841688
I don't know if I'd call him a hack, but he certainly lost some amount of respect, more from some people than others. There's a post summing up the progression of things in the Desuarchive:

I know about all of that, I just wanted to discuss it. Being honest.. the future looks dark for the comic. Aaron certainly seems different from how he was a few years ago and it's reflected on the quality of his work.
>>
>>8841784
It might be a combination of things... maybe his limited fame went to his head, and he started thinking he could do no wrong, perhaps even committing the major writing sin of taking his audience for granted. Might also be that the increasing stress he's under as a result of his illness and financial strain has affected his work. I've often wondered if he's had bouts of depression in recent years, and it's bleeding into the comic. It's come up before on /co/, and each time it got a very strong denial from one of his friends (KC, I'd assume).

I definitely agree that the quality, consistency and coherency of the writing has slowly fallen since the 2012-2013 period.

I think the comic will continue on, but it won't reach the heights it once did. It's certainly never going to "outstrip Ziggy in popularity", as Aaron once said he wanted it to.

Guess that happens when you're in the middle of something interesting then go "hush, let's be mushy again". I really can't stand them anymore.

Wally and Kribee's relationship seems to be about the same.. it will be boring too.

2013, I'm pretty sure it was.

They're right, though, this does feel like it's more for Aaron's benefit than the readership's

>>>/co/91679928
>At this point I am seriously worried that Aaron is doing this less for plot and character development and more as comfort food for himself knowing he had that divorce last year.
He got divorced in 2013 (June 14, to be exact). It shouldn't be so anyway because he has Selina now.

>Wally and Kribee's relationship seems to be about the same.. it will be boring too.
For me, it's because Wally and Holly's relationship was two equal partners in a bond of mutual respect, understanding and learning, while Wally/Kirbee and Walt/Portia both feel more like hero worship on the part of the females and comfort-seeking on the part of the males. It's weird.
