Haven't played any Layton games besides the first, but from what I remember there were at least a few puzzles that had a bunch of red herrings or trick questions that made you overthink the answer. Unless we're talking about radioactive, asexually-reproducing mice I don't see how you'd have enough information to accurately solve what's being asked.

I was trying to add up numbers in my head, and I was thinkimg the number can't be exactly found because we don't know the percentage chance of females being born in a litter, which would further affect the number of mice born.

So because you can't figure out how many females would be born from the 1st mice's litter and so on so forth, it's a big guess on how many would be born. And then I saw the answer, got confused, and finally remembered how breeding actually works.

I may be half-retarded.

I disagree with this sentiment. Being mixed up by this problem means that you didn't learn how to correctly apply what you learned (which is the fun part).
Calculus and exponential growth are not applicable to this problem, because small populations are discrete values, not continuous.
Instead, a sequence better represents the growth. The formula for the next generation is P(n+1) = n + 12*floor(n/2), where n is the current population (assumed to survive), and 12*floor(n/2) is the number of mating pairs (assuming sex/gender doesn't matter). However, if the initial population P(0)=1, then all resulting generations are 1 because of the floor function, which rounds down.

There, advanced mathematical thought used to solve the problem. Faster to think than to write it out, of course, but the logic is ultimately the same as "it can't breed because it doesn't have a partner".

I'd counter argue that, because math word problens are often setup like this, and no change is VERY rarely the answer.
In preparing for the tests like the ACT/SAT, you learn to setup a word problem and solve it quickly, since you have a limited amount of time to solve it.

Well that's all my point really was. I feel like the Layton games would be easier before having been conditioned by standardized testing.
The puzzles themselves are all completely solvable with basic logic, but standardized testing causes you to overthink it and try to solve it in a more complicated way than is necessary.

This is one reason I enjoy playing the Prof. Layton games. They help keep problem solving skills a bit more open and not so regimented.

Anyways, back to posting bellies. I didn't mean for this to stir up a huge discussion.
