>Do you consider yourself a successful writefriend? We all know one can never have enough (yous) and kudos, but what's your feeling all in all?
No. No. Not even close. I haven't even said a quarter of what I want to say. Not yet. I'm writing at a chapter on a biweekly basis, which is a moderate speed, but not fast enough. Every time a new thought pops up, I want to share it with the world. Sometimes, I'll get an idea that I feel that readers will love, but I also
realize that the idea won't be applicable until several chapters later. Sometimes, a memory or idea will sequester itself within the recesses of my memory, in which case I will have to trudge it out, like a bottom-trawler.
>Have you written prose before? For how long? Have you ever educated yourself on the art of writing, be it formal courses, books or reaching for professional help?
I wish I had done more writing in pleasure in High School, but I mainly dedicated myself to clinical essay-writing.
>Are there any books/guides/online courses you can recommend?
Read fiction and non-fiction. The best way to write well is to neither to just devour books,
nor to cut a hole in the paper lining, and insert a fleshlight inside the book
(lest one obtains paper-cuts on his urethrea as a true bibliophile would),
but rather to analyze the writing:
how does the author describe the scene? Are there any symbols or overarching themes that shape the work as a whole? Having a basic understanding of plot and command of language will set one on the path of excellence.
V. by Thomas Pynchon is a good book. His zaney digressions are absolutely the best, and I love the way that the plot hops from one story to another.

Read this earlier and was waiting for the new thread to give it a (you).
Really enjoyed this installment; the unspoken history of Percy and his sister has probably been the most intriguing thing for me that you've presented in the past months since you've started drawing little hints here and there (moreso than Hugh's job, because it's pretty obvious his full-time employment is operating a booty that don't quit).
Looking forward to the next chapter.
Here's something for you and/or the characters you write.

>There is a reason why you write. What is important for you? Do you want to tell a story? Share your own experiences? Entertainment? What is your motivator?
I first formulated my current idea as a Senior in HS, working tirelessly, trying to perfect my creative writing essays for whatever college I desired. I realized that I had been, from 9th grade on, paralyzed within the scope of analysis and rhetorial essay-writing, as I was not able to formulate a cohesive story, even if the word limit was 650.
But in truth, I wanted to share my experiences and grief with the college admissions system by writing a story about college. It's a strange overgrowth that happened after I was done with admissions.
(this reminds me that all my college admissions decisions come out on march 30 FUCK)
>How do you identify faults in your writing? Self-reflection? Feedback? Critique requests? Other? How useful do you think they are compared to each other?
Comicanon reads my stories when he has time. He gives excellent feedback and critiques, although I haven't gotten to implementing about 25% of his edits. I've edited the other 75%, though!
Some anonymous replies to my work will tell me that it's pretty good, and I'm pretty excited and motivated whenever I read them!
However, I also have a strong suspicion that these replies are subject to voluntary response bias,
mainly because the people that like my work will be more inclined to reply then people who don't.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green he leadeth me the silent waters by
With bright knives he releaseth my soul
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places
He converteth me to lamb cutlets
For lo,m he hath great power and great hunger
When cometh the day we lowly ones
Through quiet reflection and great dedication
Master the art of karate
Lo, we shall rise up
And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water.

>That night, he'd heard a noise. Wasting no time, he broke into a full sprint.
>He could hear their pants. He was so close to escaping. Maybe that was why he didn't see it coming.
>Then he woke up, blindfolded and strapped to a flat, ice-cold surface.
>Maybe he shouldn't have kept his wool shaved bare.
>But then again, less wool was useful when one needed to hide in a small space.
>A hiss of disapproval sounded close by. They wouldn't get the pleasure of shaving him.
>Before he could choke out a defiant remark, a furred hand touched his body.
>Judging from the power behind it alone, this belonged to a larger pred. One he had no chance of fighting against.
>There was no escape.

I've always been a Cab Sauv man myself.
Reminds me of when me, Comicanon and Bore were out drinking NYC.
Before hitting a shot bar I knew, Comic saw a winebar and almost insisted that we check it out.
No sooner did we sit at our cramp and awkward seats, that Comic turned to me, asking for a recommendation.
He almost never drinks wine (nor did Bore).
"I dunno, I don't care much for white wine, so I usually stick to Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Noir."
Taking my suggestion into consideration they proceeded to instead order a variety of white wine I've never heard of.
The Cabernet was otherwise rather good.

Every once in a while we will discuss something from the movie. We have mostly talked the thing to death, but there are times we will find a new angle; character motivations, a detail someone missed, etc. There was a bit of a talk about the in movie time stamps, like the Mr. Manchas chase taking place at 11:30pm.

Too true.
Probably the best cocktail I've had was at a place in NYC's Chinatown called Apotheke.
Very overpriced, but you were paying for the quality, and this was a very lovely mix of rum, lime, pineapple, ginger, and a few other herbs I can't recall.

I for one don't like drawing breadstick dicks.
I don't hate them and I think other artists draw them well, but they're boring for me to actually draw. As much as I suck at drawing animal dicks I'd draw them over featureless dicks.
Of course the best dicks are human dicks, if I had to choose. Still animal dicks have gotten fun to draw.

>>8421083
Honestly in general people draw vaginas pretty similarly unless they want to add variety. Different lengthed labia, different clit or hood size.
Animals have varying vaginas, but I'm not cool with drawing that. Probably because I'm a woman, or because I'm super into women. Take your pick.
Point is usually vaginas are drawn pretty plain and innocently in general.

>>8418175
I read it. I liked it.
I particularly liked the way you handled Percy's family history, via both the title and the silence between the siblings, for the most emotionally powerful things are the one left unspoken.
If I have a critique to do, one thing I didn't particularly like is how you described the characters' behaviour in the first part.
Phrases like 'Maxine gives him a pointed look.' or 'Hugh shrugs.' These phrases are too short and/or in the wrong places, enrich them a little, otherwise they seem like 'obstacles' in the dialogue, rocks that break the flow of the conversation. Describe a little more and/or go with the flow (e.g. "...says the guy who always suggests cartoons" said Maxine, giving Hugh a pointed look' or 'with a shrug, Hugh added "S'your house, man."), you need to mix action and dialogue in the same phrase. Also usually it is better to put verbs that describe the act of speaking near the dialogue (e.g. 'After what feels like an eternity, placing the bottle opener on the couch, Caitlin is the first to speak up.' instead of 'After what feels like an eternity, Caitlin is the first to speak up, placing the bottle opener on the couch.').
I hope this helps

>>8421266
>you need to mix action and dialogue in the same phrase.
If I weren't writing it in a script format I'd agree with you 100%, however given the format combining the two isn't very viable and would read awkwardly. The actions and the dialogue are meant to be separated; it's intentional.
I'll also admit I'm hardly the most colorful person when it comes to behavior. I actually have to give a lot of credit to my editor for that, as I personally feel my strength is more in dialogue. Had I not had help it would likely read even clunkier than it currently does.
Again were I using a non-script style format I'd agree with your criticism, but I personally don't feel it would translate well. I feel like an ass for 'dismissing' it, but I disagree with it given the format. I may just be misunderstanding what you mean, though, and I'll admit I do that quite often.
>Also usually it is better to put verbs that describe the act of speaking near the dialogue
This however makes a lot of sense to me, and if that's what you meant in line with the above, then I may understand it better. Thank you very much.
>I particularly liked the way you handled Percy's family history, via both the title and the silence between the siblings, for the most emotionally powerful things are the one left unspoken.
Thanks. Honestly that scene was the most important one to me, and it had to be reworked quite a bit. It was one of the things holding the update up, and with good reason.
Thank you for reading, and thank you very much for the critique.

Ah, if you meant to have it read in a script format is another matter entirely. I personally thought it was more akin to a greentext.
Also, yes, I meant that some verbs like "added", "answered" and such can be useful in making the jump between description and dialogue less sudden, making it flow more fluidly. And this should be also possible maintaining the same format you have done until now

Nope! It's meant to be read like a script or a simple storybook. It's not written in prose.
I've written a greentext only once, and I wrote that in prose. This was meant to be read more like a script, thus why there are names above the dialogue.

I want to both laugh and cry at how true this is.
Joking aside, Nick has had some slick moments and fumbles in the comic. Nick's nonchalant telling Judy to get out of his room, his turning on the lights on the bear, and being able to grab the vixen and nearly everything she dropped...except for the coffee.
I guess Judy's fumble would be stepping into the coffee? She hasn't been "on screen" that much so she really hasn't had the chance to do a whole lot.

I wouldn't consider him turning light on the bear and the vixen grabbing slick moments, you don't need to be squabbling or pulling sweet moves to be slick. In this comic he's Nick the funny cop rather than Nick the conman turned cop.

These threads are very welcoming to OCs. If you're new to this place, here's a few general suggestions to keep in mind:
>Stick to the lore and aesthetic of the canon material. This means mammals only, no primates, animal biology.
>It's best to avoid self-inserts (literally me in Zootopia) unless you have an idea how to make the character interesting. It's less important if you're just rolling up an OC, but for story telling purposes the character needs to be well-developed.
>Avoid interaction with protagonists/major canon characters. The temptation to put the OC in the spotlight or between the protagonists is often irresistible so you're better off not doing this in the first place.
>Don't be afraid to ask for feedback and don't get discouraged with the reception.
We love worldbuilding and well-designed OCs (and indeed a lot of characters have comics/mini stories about them these threads love and discuss).
We have a list of people's online personas here http://ztgcensus.tumblr.com/ - I'm not going to grade them because it's all subjective, but do take a look and see what you like and what you think you could do better.
Best of luck with your work and looking forward to reading it soon!

Cute.
Hey, /ztg/
l'm making a comic.
It's a short-ish comic with a total of 6 parts which will take me 2-3 weeks to finish.
I'm wondering if you guys prefer that I post it when everything's done or post each part as I finish it.
>>8424026
While I, since it is a copy of the original, cannot say nothing about the ability at drawing anatomy and pose, I can say that I admire greatly the coloring ability of the author of the video.
It requires many, many hours of experience to reach that level, especially with pencils.
>>8424049
Posting in parts seems more interesting imho.
>>8424049
When I do it I try to post it all together because it's easier to not get cold feet and change it midway.
But the thing is you should probably do whatever you found easier and most enjoyable.

>>8424085
>>8424124
>posting in parts is more interesting
>how so?
It really is your preference and how the comic is structured. Take as example the Borba comic above or Mead's comic.
They both post in parts, mainly because every page can create a little expectation for the next and contains an integer number of interactions.
This means that, while there is a discussion moving through more than one part, the "banter" is self concluding in that part.
Every part still creates expectation for the next, this is what I meant with "more interesting".
It is my personal opinion, but I prefer following a work in the span of days than having a huge dump all at once. Pauses between parts create introspection, reflecting about the story, thinking about the characters, and, in the end, getting more involved with the work. But this is only my opinion
>>8424163
>in the end
IT DOESN'T EVEN MATTER
>>8424143
Yup. Hi, this is Pho.
I decided to finish that before posting because I think it would lose a lot of the tension if I posted it by parts.
It was supposed to be one super long strip but I had to cut it up due to size restrictions in 4chan.
This one, however, has defined cut-off points which is why I can so it in parts.
>>8424124
Pho?
I think posting each part is better, to build expectation
>>8424064
yeah, start tracing is a good practice, i think is the forced way to learn muscle memory. Just try to move on to start making references quick.
>>8421154
all is going according to plan...
>>8424206
Actually I was talking more about the colouring, which the video was all about. I personally find tracing as a practice one has to distance themselves as fast as they can, since it can lead to dangerous addictions (see Porn Detectives).
I'm colouring my TT entry these days, and even digitally is a real time consumer and certainly not easy. Even less with pencils, where you don't have layers and you need to incorporate both shadows and reflections with the base color. The fact that 90% of the drawing is fur (a very hard subject to tackle realistically, with the multifaceted reflections) increases my admiration for the author even more.
