Again I can't speak about Betty, or even how well this fits into your own ongoing continuity as I don't get the time to read often, but since I'm a self-indulgent asshole and I feel its rude not to read a piece that uses my characters (thank you kindly again. I'm certainly flattered) I'll likely try to backlog this in the future.

I've got a bit of a character nitpick for Hugh, and now that I'm incredibly tired that's clearly the best time to talk about it.

I've been discussing with chums how important a character's 'voice' is, and they had a lot of interesting things to say that I certainly agree with. There's a lot about Hugh that's shrouded in mystery, so I won't harp on characterization in that front, as a lot can only be left up to interpretation (unless I wanted to spoil everything), but I will say while I won't complain about personality (as again you only have what you see and a decade can change a man), but I will say he has a particular way of speaking.

I said before a professional tone makes sense since he has what seems like a government job in this, but his way of talking is normally pretty lax and sort of 'I don't give a fuck if this comes out sounding weird'.

I'll use an example from an exercise I did, actually. Let's say a general line/idea, like
>"I don't think this is going to work out. It's not me, it's you."

Maxine would probably say "I'm sorry, but this isn't going to work. You're great. I mean it, but I just don't think I can do this right now."

While Hugh would likely phrase it "Er, yeah. This isn't gonna happen. It's not you. Really. Just not feelin' it is all."

I don't know how helpful of an example this is, but I wanted to set some kind of comparison.

I'm also not shitting on you for not knowing. Updates are not frequent, so it's probably not super noticeable if you aren't reading a bunch in a row.

But there are some things you should improve.
First being the place description.
You should describe the places better when we enter them. Colors of rooms/houses, furniture, decorations, useful items, people who are inside and other fun details.
Where characters go, what they plan for the day etc.
You describe the places as you go and it's kinda jaggy when suddenly some things appear or happen out of nowhere. Or characters suddenly (to us) change their plans to what they apparently had planned but we only hear about it now.

The second thing would be, eh character objectives...?
Same as I said above, characters change their plans out of the blue to us. It would feel better if we got to know what they planned ahead so we can get into their mindset and better feel their troubles.

To that. I found Johnny's troubles of being the son of a sheep very interesting. But shame there was no foreshadowning, maybe some incident like that happening or small scale or Remmy thinking about it. Maybe you could give Betty's point of view about Johnny's problem, it could be a nice way fore some mother/son bonding.

As I said I love this story. I hope this is somewhat helpful.

She's very tomboyish; came from a farming family with three brothers so her shit-talking game is extremely on-point; works for a newspaper. Extremely go-getting. Think Avo but slightly less of a dick and you're not far off.

He's a college student studying Hipponese as his major. He translates stuff for these threads, plays vidya, works a shit retail job, and helps his wife edit articles due to extensive language knowledge. Extremely not go-getting, but can keep a cooler head in stressful scenario.

As far as characterization goes, it is an issue, not going to lie. I wrote this intitally thinking that it would be a one chapter piece. Then, I made it into a three chapter mini-series thing. Now, it's sprawling out. Love these characters, but then it means that I might need to go back and retcon some more things in the early sections.
