Thinking about it, it almost sounds like someone could be making threats/extortions on both sides, and each side thinks it's the other threatening them.
>>
>>8412610
By "Someone", I mean some third party.

Wolves don't seem to have been disappearing, though, so maybe the threat against them takes a different form than something immediate (and is balanced against the existence/reputation of the pig population), and that's what Hatwolf is referring to?

I wonder if Aaron's going to have Dottie get a hold of approximately half of the full story of what's going on, and then go off half-cocked?
>>
>>8419546
English is not my first language, could you rephrase that?
>>
>>8419656
I'm wondering if Aaron's going to have Walt tell Dottie about the phone calls, and Dottie will look into it and come to the wrong conclusion (ie: "wolves are harassing pigs into suicide") because she doesn't have all the information she needs, possibly ending up writing something for her newspaper that leads people to believe the wrong thing and thus makes things worse.

Personally I'd prefer she played the part of the proper sleuth for this chapter, and it doesn't seem like something she would do given her previous characterisation, but it's not like Aaron hasn't changed up a character offscreen before...

It was back to being late last time, but I'm willing to bet the upload system on GoComics is fucked or something, too. It'd be pretty typical for the site.

Up just now, anyway.

What's Aaron going for, here?
>>
>>8448701
More wolves? Was Marx on crack or something, because there's no other way to explain the number of both wolves and pigs.
>>
>>8448872
It's downright weird, with the entire animal kingdom to choose from and the implication that the disappearance of animals was directly tied to the mutations (although IIRC that's an email thing that's never been mentioned in-comic, so maybe Aaron's discarded it and we're going to see someone with a non-ambiguous pet eventually).
>>
>>8448932
Another thing that's odd is that I could swear Aaron said at some point that anthro cats aren't any particular species and that each individual is a mishmash of various cat species.

So is it different for wolves, or are we mostly seeing dog/coyote/fox mashups that "identify" as wolves? And are they going to be called out on that at some point?
>>
>>8448701
>>>/co/91148784

So he doesn't care, but the characters do? And despite everyone from lizards to cats being a cross-species mashup, wolves are somehow wolves despite being just another breed of dog, genetically speaking?
>>
>>8450009
>genetically speaking
That is worth jack shit, people see a wolf and they will call it a wolf.
>>
>>8450136
That's what I was suggesting before, that they're mashups that simply look wolfish enough that they've decided they're wolves. Basically wolfdogs.

>I think Aaron meant that species are ambiguous within their own, not that all canines were an unholy mix of everything. He just doesn't want to be specific.

Pardon, but that sounds like two ways of saying the same thing.

Frankly I think "You're all mutts anyway" would be a perfect rejoinder to people like the "wolf pride" guy from the last page, preparatory to following up with "And you and everyone else in Endtown are all still biologically mostly-human right down to your digestive systems."

I feel like this is born of Jackrabbit's mutation-embracing thing, but also like it might be going further than he meant when using it in his power grab, and in a different direction, perhaps.
>>
>>8452061
No, I mean that you're going too far by thinking that wolves and dogs can't be their own thing just because Aaron said that species aren't well defined. That just means he doesn't bother with making sure Wally is certain species of housecat, that doesn't make Wally a lynx.
>>

wilevsralph[1].jpg

>>
>>8452548
Didn't the email specifically address this stuff though? I thought the point of it was that there were no lynxes, just cats? Mixes of traits from wildly different cat species as well as breeds, to make cartoonish meta-cats? Same with the lizards, who are generically lizardy? I mean, there's obviously a mix, we've seen housecat-looking cats much taller than Wally and a Lionesque fellow who I would say was shorter than Flask.

Either way, dogs and wolves are the same species, so if what you said was true then you'd still expect ill-defined mixes within the dog-wolf range.

And even if wolves have been cordoned off somehow (perhaps by the perceptual/cultural component of the mutation agent), the supposed connection of animal disappearances to the mutations would suggest to me that wolves should be very rare indeed, as I'm pretty sure they're far outnumbered by dogs in our universe and I can only assume that they had an even lower population in the Endtown universe due to the whole retro-sci-fi industrial dystopia thing. In other words, not as many "wolf" slots to go around. Plenty of pigs, though. Of course that assumes previous animal populations are linked to anthro demographics, it might not have been so direct.

On another note, before this stuff came out I was assuming around the time of the pro-mutant meeting that Wally was a Wildcat. I'm amazed the people at the meeting didn't try and dub him that, along with "Holly Housemouse".

(We really need those emails all in one place, especially since a lot of this stuff never seems to become explicit in the comic...)

Ha ha, oh wow.
>>
Does GoComics now have the comic awkwardly off-center for anyone else?
>>
>>8448205

General atmosphere about the comic since the ship has been going down. Partially to blame is Aaron's own attempt to douse the fire with gasoline, the other part with people white knighting him at any attempt of criticism of the decline of writing. You want to know the sadder thing? If things keep going like this it's gonna get worse.

The new chapter isn't captivating and so foar it stinks a lot like a re-heated Milk Run chapter so far with the love triangle tossed in for good measure. It's a mess where we don't really know what is going on and left with that "Wait what" feeling every now and then without knowing who to root for (Other than Walt and his GF).
>>
>>8457442
Yes.
>>
>>8457686
If that is the case, then he should be really careful with how he handles Dottie now, I think. All through the last year I've seen people hoping this arc was going to have her (or Linda, to be fair) as the main protag. People seemed interested in Walt mainly for his backstory, and then only because it promised to give us a glimpse of the events that made him the Hero of Pep Cola Stadium and therefore give us details of that whole situation with the rounding up of mutants (which we still haven't seen).

If he really does send Dottie screwy and/or make her a victim/antagonist/tragic-downfall-prop, I suspect it'd only accelerate any exodus. People would probably also start saying he'd fallen into a pattern of sabotaging and/or removing his established strong, well-developed, outspoken female characters and replacing them with two-dimensional waifu-bait like Kirbee and Portia, which could lead to accusations of misogyny or whatever from elsewhere.

First of all, it's a catch-all /trash/ general, so I wouldn't call it life support. For as long as I've been here, standard procedure has been to bump Endtown /trash/ threads until we hit either the bump limit or the image limit. It's how most /trash/ threads operate.

Secondly, we sporadically have good conversation and new art in here, plus anyone's free to post their favourite banned-from-/co/ images, so I think I, personally, will keep bumping these.

So when are we going to meet the sympathetic wolf character, or is Hatwolf's friend already having second thoughts? There's got to be one coming in at some point, Aaron said he's not doing the "some species are just bad" thing.

I hate that this seems to be a sure thing now. It felt like a cheap cop-out at the end of the Milk Trial and it hasn't improved a lick since then.

Amazing how something as bad as Marx exists in an otherwise great comic. It's almost schizophrenic.
>>
>>8484970
I like the theory that he's the comic's "suck sink". He has to be awful so the rest of the comic can be good.

Seems like he was leaking everywhere last arc, though. Aaron should take the comic to a mechanic.

Honestly this doesn't surprise me; Endtown is the same place where lynchmobs assemble and kill with strong enough provocation and the splintering is just going to get worse. Right now we have the wolves collecting together against Heather for the incident at the shop. We also are framed the wolves showing up at Portia's place with a suggestion they were planning something unpleasant (which was associated with another incident where violence was used in a socially unacceptable situation.

As a reader I think Walt was justified in what he was doing to help Portia but I do not think for a minute that Heather was justified in the same vein. The wolves were actively chasing and menacing Portia where in Heather's shop the only thing the wolf chick did was make a rude comment about Jolene's weight and the food shortage.

So what we could have here is a bred infighting situation where someone may be part of the subgroup but align to the subgroup on behalf of thinking they're receiving unfair treatment and seeing others who have been attacked without justification paired with others of their kind who have done bad things which some might not interpret as 'bad' (as /co/ proved with some people defending the wolves for just terrorizing Portia but not physically harming her).

>>
>>8486304
During a food shortage getting fatter is the opposite of what anyone should be.
>>
>>8486138
Everyone's on edge and Endtown isn't really populated with smart, clear minded or even particularly pleasant people for the most part, so justified or otherwise, violence is going to happen.

I'm finding it hard to care about it much, though. Not only have we seen this stuff before, but I think it's running into the same situation the Zootopia guys did where the first totally-dystopian version of the city had audiences cheering for the likeable characters to abandon it, not save it. I can't even say it's among the more interesting parts of the setting for me, I prefer the wasteland stuff. It was certainly refreshing when Holly and Wally left. At this point the mystery of who's really running this, Dottie and seeing what's become of the familiar faces we haven't caught up to yet are the only things I'm really interested in. Everything else just seems like same old, same old.

>>
>>8486592
It is really bizarre that I sit here thinking Holly made the right call on leaving Endtown with Wally, even after the fiasco that was the Ship Arc. Endtown just seems like a generally shitty place to live and we aren't seeing much of the charm that accompanies the bad to change outlook on how dreary a place it is. You're also right that there's a lack of familiar faces or even good setup for the characters we're seeing. Walt gets immediately thrown into his situation with Portia, Dottie is barely seen doing investigative journalism. Older arc characters like Linda, Maude, Al and Gustine are missing, as is the suggested tensions against Typhoid Marys that were left on the backburner after the Milk Trial are absent in exhange for this tension between wolves and pigs that were't present beforehand. As closely as it rides Zootopia I think the predator/prey angle would have been a better one because we have evidence of that already happening in Endtown before, when Holly was kidnapped by those bigger cat people to eat. This focus on specie to specie tension just is a callback to Unity's beginning with the unfortunate position of having been established previously rather than being a brand new slate to work with.

Feeding meat still takes more resources to produce than taking food already existing, making it practically a luxury item. Third world countries survive off staple foods more than meat such as rice or beans, and Endtown should have availability for milk and eggs now.

>Endtown just seems like a generally shitty place to live and we aren't seeing much of the charm that accompanies the bad to change outlook on how dreary a place it is.
I think one of the things that contributes to Endtown-the-Place's lack of appeal is that it appears to have zero culture apart from recycled 50's-esque social tropes. We're told the people down there are trying to pretend the war never happened, but it feels more like they're just waiting to die.

You'd expect to see rescued films that hinted at the culture before the war, old music traded like it was worth its weight in gold and always on at every bar and diner, an Endtown library with *really* strict librarians, dance shows, street theater, people (besides Marx) telling stories. We've seen a really basic Punch and Judy show, and we know Holly liked to read books, and that's about all that comes to mind.

And it's been what, eight years? Almost a decade. Not only would you expect people to be doing their best to entertain themselves with artistic shreds of the old world, but you'd expect new culture to be forming, especially among the younger generation. We've seen no Endtown childrens' games based around the thousand things you can do with a bean can, no Endtown teen rebellion music about loving/hating beans, no Endtown spiritually challenging post-war art painted in bean juice, no Endtown movies about daring surface quests to find something besides beans (and Mallard's welcome film means they *can* make movies), no Great Endtown Novel. Hell, you'd expect to see locally produced TV shows and radio dramas, too. You'd also expect to see culture clashes, like kids that grew up as anthros not seeing the appeal in the boringly-homogeneous old movies and TV shows full of plain humans, while their parents watch them avidly, pining over the life they represented.

It's just so... empty. And I don't think it's supposed to be, because Aaron says in the emails that there *is* culture.

>You're also right that there's a lack of familiar faces or even good setup for the characters we're seeing. Walt gets immediately thrown into his situation with Portia,
I feel like this was so abrupt that it was a last-second choice. Portia didn't even get much real characterisation, and I can't really say her and Walt have any chemistry...

>Dottie is barely seen doing investigative journalism.
I'd expect her to be one of the first to find out about the pig-calls, really, not Walt. She seemed like the type to always be chasing up that sort of thing, and it's been remarked before that the leak-proof nature of this apparently rather wide conspiracy strains suspension of disbelief somewhat.

>Older arc characters like Linda, Maude, Al and Gustine are missing
I really feel like the arc should have opened with either Linda, Dottie or Maude, maybe with some kind of breather or grace period instead of going right into social chaos after the drain of that last arc. At this point it feels like we're not going to see Linda or Maude at all, and their arc is going to continue later - there's too much other stuff happening right now.

>as is the suggested tensions against Typhoid Marys that were left on the backburner after the Milk Trial are absent in exhange for this tension between wolves and pigs that were't present beforehand.
And yes, Al and Gustine/the Typhoid Marys need to be addressed soon. It's very weird how we haven't heard anything at all about the "racism" against the TMs, not even anyone mentioning it's blown over or they all left or were killed. Especially since it just seemed to be coming to a head as Holly and Wally were leaving.

As an addendum, I want to say another likely issue with this arc is that it's basically shadowing real life. There's a lot of similar stuff going on IRL right now, and a lot of people are sick of it. There's probably an element of "If I wanted to hear about this shit I'd just turn the television on" at play.

Yes, and since there's no direct connection to Unity with, say, Wally bringing back a dire warning about tribalism and running around playing Cassandra, it's just happening again like Aaron's stuck on the theme. As mentioned by others this arc is already feeling like a re-do on multiple other levels, too.

Eh... with how Wally turned out it was probably for the best. People shipped her with Wally because they wanted to see them happy, moreso her than him, but it's pretty clear now that Wally is a danger to everyone.

>inb4 sour grapes
Yes, Wally IS a very sour grape. Just look at poor Holly.

Kirbee is next.

I was thinking her unresolved "supposedly dead but probably just missing friend" plotline would probably keep her around.

I guess the story is saddled with her for a while yet.
>>
>>8541348
So yet another wolf, encountered by pure happenstance, by the person who just happened to know two completely unconnected pigs well enough to fret over one of them and kick someone who bitched at the other one out of her shop.

It's either more plot-convenient coincidences, Endtown having ridiculous population demographics that have never even been hinted at before, or worst case, it signals more Marx involvement.

On another note, did she wander dazed all night without meeting anyone, or did the wolves leave her unconscious in that alley? It looks closed off at the back...
>>
>>8541594
He looks like one of the wolves harassing Portia but maybe Aaron just ran out of designs.

>did the wolves leave her unconscious in that alley?
Looks like it. I just hope it doesn't turn out that they raped her too.

In before this guy is the first completely nice wolf, and he's going to be a protagonist.

Because speaking of designs, he kind of has Wally's hairstyle, not too different from Walt's either. In fact if you block out his snout, that second panel could almost fit in that "Wally From Behind" gif. Of course, it probably means nothing, but it caught my eye.

>Looks like it. I just hope it doesn't turn out that they raped her too.
Same. On top of anything else, rape as drama is kind of overdone.
>>
>>8541348
Since there is a good chance she got knotted, requesting Heather getting the knot.

>>8541865
Nobody got raped in Endtown yet however. And it's technically the worst thing you can do to a female, besides... I dunno, grotesque dismemberment. If they just bottled her once she wouldn't be so broken.
>>
>>8541671
>He looks like one of the wolves harassing Portia but maybe Aaron just ran out of designs.

Yeah, I feel like before this arc is done Aaron's going to run into problems differentiating between the wolves. Maybe he'll mostly go with clothing designs, he seemed to go that way pretty early on with Unity and the lizards...
>>
>>8542163
>Nobody got raped in Endtown yet however. And it's technically the worst thing you can do to a female, besides... I dunno, grotesque dismemberment. If they just bottled her once she wouldn't be so broken.
She's lost a friend (to wolves, she thinks), been involved in a budding race war with wolfish violence, been singled out on the street to be shouted at by wolves, and now she's been beaten up by a group of them. I think that's probably enough to get this reaction, personally.
>>
>>8542347
>She's lost a friend (to wolves, she thinks), been involved in a budding race war with wolfish violence, been singled out on the street to be shouted at by wolves,
And her reaction to all that was just declare she would make the wolves pay.

>and now she's been beaten up by a group of them.
I don't think being 'just' beaten would make such a reaction, when it's already estabilished she is prone to violence. She probably already got into fights before.

>And her reaction to all that was just declare she would make the wolves pay.
I can't find anywhere that she said she'd make them pay. She said she was finished tolerating them (which suggested she had been up 'til then) and that was only in reaction to her conclusion that the wolves had murdered her friend, at the start. Then she followed through on that by hitting the wolf customer, and the other stuff has been piled on her since then.

>I don't think being 'just' beaten would make such a reaction, when it's already estabilished she is prone to violence. She probably already got into fights before.
I think it would, since there'd been zero suggestion she'd been in fights before the one in the laundry, that fight seemed to be half panic attack, *and* it seems like before this she was the friendly neighbourhood washerwoman that even wolves brought their laundry to. I don't think she's some kind of kung fu wizard or habitual street brawler, anon.

This time they even ganged up on her - I'd say a gang beating by a very well-defined gang, one that leaves a person out cold for around eight hours, is more than enough to make that person fearful of anyone who looks like they could be a gang member, especially if they still can't think straight due to head trauma and were already mentally classifying people from that group as "potentially vicious".

Besides which, narratively I don't think this needs to be rape - one side of the issue sending a message to the other with a "we could have killed you, but we decided to teach you a lesson instead" act of purely physical violence is probably enough.

Damn it Carlos

I'd love to see sanitation wolf be at her bedside when she wakes up at the hospital. But then again if they hook up it will be the third time that's happened in the comic. Who needs bars when the best place to hook up is the hospital.

This people aren't acting rationally, though. Also, remember how Walt and Portia turned out to have history together. It's contrived but Aaron doesn't seem to care as long as it "surprises" people. Sudden rape as drama would do just that.

Yes, I've been noticing that more and more as the comic goes on.

>Sudden rape as drama would do just that.
It arguably would, but very briefly and frankly I think it would feel rather cheap and gauche, so I'd hope he wouldn't do that...
>>
>>8552584
What'd be cool justification would be revealing that there is a faction of pigs stealing food and causing the shortage, or at least making it worse, and portioning it around their community because they aren't meant to be 'thin'. Remember that not all the pigs are starving and exercising themselves to near death like Portia, some were getting fatter for unknown reasons before they died.
>>
>>8552841
Yeah, everyone's on rations by the sound of it, so the pigs being able to eat more is seriously odd. Says either theft OR the interference of someone powerful, to me.

If we go with the latter, I'd guess that someone's hitting the pigs with a threat/offer that, if they do the "moral thing" and volunteer to be food for others while lowering the amount of mouths to feed in the long run, their friends and family will be well treated (or not harmed).

Possibly there is a bonus involved if they go out a mile wide, as they then feed more people (and possibly there is an intentional logic fault here when it comes to the fact that the food they would have to eat to get that fat would provide more meals/nutrition than their fattened bodies, or perhaps Aaron just doesn't do that kind of math).

Meanwhile the overeating induced by this bonus is being used by the people making the threats to rile up the carnivorous part of the populace against pigs (primarily by stirring up the wolves), which is in turn being used to stir up the herbivore population against predators.

In this scenario, I guess the goal is predator VS prey societal chaos. Probably either knowingly or unknowingly in aid of triggering something Marx wants. Again.
>>
>>8552933
That would be an interesting twist, that the endgoal would be a manufactured eventual predator vs prey societal viewpoint. I agree too that the logic of 'feeding people' with their bodies doesn't make total sense. In a society where 'feed' is the only food source the population has using more to make a bigger meat corpse still won't account for the loss of the initial food. Anyone with some knowledge in agriculture knows that it takes a large volume of food to make proper meat animals. In a place like Endtown meat would take more resources to make and with a finite amount of food it makes the food too precious to spend on something like fattening someone else.

Now if they want to make the population smaller by eliminating people from it then save the food and just kill them outright, don't beat around the bush stuffing them for a luxury food.
>>
>>8553253
It all reminds me that Mallard's bean-turkeys were two years ago in-universe with no apparent progress and the... hydroponics, was it? They haven't been mentioned since... at this point I wonder if Aaron just abandoned the idea in favour of Endtown eventually trading with the Lucranians or replicating food wholesale or something.

If they did want to grow stuff underground they're not going to be short of fertiliser. Quick estimates suggest that after eight years, the 7000 (I think) people of Endtown have probably produced at least 3000 metric tonnes of usable material, probably rather more. Where the hell are they storing it all? They must be because they can't let anything escape the Endtown environment or it can be tracked back. Does it also explain the mysterious power source the whole place runs off? Are they burning methane? They'd have to be storing the waste gasses, though...
