The townspeople got so desperate when the town started to die they started to actually believe there was a being in the hole that would save the town. Stuff like that happens a lot in history. What Mae saw when she "fell" in the hole was a kind of hallucination since the rest of the squad said they saw her just sleep walk and not actually fall into anything. From what I gathered, the hole is a metaphor that is actually believable to happen, and every weird thing Mae sees and dreams up is due to mental issues.

Make the plot branch and have horrible tragic endings the less you explore and pay attention to what's happening, with better outcomes the more you uncover about Possum Springs, Mae and her friends and family. Basically add investigative game mechanics that reward being thorough by altering the course of events for better or worse.
