/awsw/ - Angels With Scaly Wings General #31, Everybody Wants To Marry Bryce Edition
Post and talk about the game, spoilers are a part of nature.

For newfags to these threads:
The OP should have one Mega download for the demo, ending in (VIlFCbjB!bgPDwSyIkxyaM099Pi_mzGzJ19ZZeKtvkGazjV_qrfI). If that Mega link is different, the new thread doesn't include this warning, or has more than one Mega download, then abandon the thread. Wrong one, it's another Speedy situation.
Ignore the robots, the captchas don't work anymore.
Drawfags and writefags are always wanted and welcome. The modded game will appreciate new content in it.
Modding tools can be found here: https://github.com/AWSWCommunity/AWSW-Modtools
New material pertaining to the current mod project will be posted here: https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/8105380/
Anything else is unsanctioned and you download it at your own risk. Do not download and run any untrusted executable files posted in any of these threads. Some shitposter spreads terrible malware that way, wait until somebody checks the code to see what it does.
Adine owns a shipping crate full of Bad Human toys, Anna made Amely with Remy and slept with Damion to try and keep him quiet, and Remy is secretly a really brutal dom.
Previous threads have had a pastebin guide for a secret ending linked, and even further back is a 99% completion steam guide that only misses the secret ending. The archives are your friend.

Any place inhabited by an earth dragon will probably end up as a dump, lacking hands for cleaning and all that.
How Remy the klutz managed to keep his place so clean is beyond me.
I imagine a house cleaning service run by runner dragons would be very popular.
>>
>>8300288
Remy kept it clean because that mattered to him, and anything that's really important he can pull off flawlessly.

Like tying knots.
>>
>>8300312
what kind of knots tho?
Would Remy have a knotted dick?
Does trying rope knots make his knot get hot?
>>
>>8300435
I imagine larger dragons would have crocodilian nethers, and there's something in there that does kinda look like a knot.

And it's not tying rope, per se.
>>
>>8300288
A service like that may even be mandatory and government-regulated according to species, I imagine. It wouldn't do to have all your strongest citizens live in dumps, half of which probably make up your police force

Just one of the downsides of keeping so closely aligned with human ideals

Fire is hard, who would have thought. Spent almost all my time yesterday trying and re-trying different approaches to emulate the shine of open flames. The first few were hillariously bad
Now all the light screwed up the contrast a little and Annas colors still look way off, but after that it's all just detail work, I think

If anyone's got ideas for any of Remy, Emera, Zhong or Lorem already, fire away. Can't hurt to start the planning early, maybe throw out a few sketches

If you want to practice more lighting, show him sitting at a table.
As in, dinner table. Candles for lighting, facing viewer.

Fumbling with cutlery optional.

You might want to consider having two streams from the mouth that intersect near the target for lore accuracy. The whole scene looks really nice.
Why is Mav starting a forest fire? He doesn't seem like the destructive type.

I've got some ideas, but a lot of them are complex:
>Remy desperately trying to play a Wii game, maybe with someone giving encouragement at his side.
>Happy Emera on a dinner date with an uncomfortable Bryce.
>Zhong on the travel vacation with his kid.

Maybe I could switch it up and do a few sketches a day and finish with some work on the larger ideas, though, so there's still content

>>8301703
That's a great idea, actually. I have no idea how to work with his almost feature-less muzzle to show proper front-view perspective, but that sounds like a well-proportioned challenge.
This might even work as its own series, now that I think about it. Candle-light dinner with the characters - Remy fumbling with cutlery in front of steak, Bryce drooling in front of several bottles, Maverick about to kill you, it almost paints itself

Hey! I wrote that!

I want to clarify: I did personally enjoy the game, and I deliberated hard on whether to give it a thumbs up or thumbs down. I decided on "not recommended" because I know that most people who saw my review would not enjoy it, and that is ultimately what the rec/norec signifies. Also, because my review wouldn't affect the score either way, and I wanted something on the "not recommended" review list that gave a more detailed assessment of the game's strengths and flaws.

Prior to the game's ending I really thought it was going to be one of those things that delivers so hard that I'd feel confident recommending it to anyone, but it really dropped the ball on that last act. Like I outlined in the review, the parts that killed it for me were the fact that the combined ending was just a single scene you automatically unlock after getting the others, and the fact that it ended on /another/ 30 minute Izumi backstory monologue, this time while she was rapidly bleeding to death.

Also it never explained why her hair color kept changing. I think we collected a total of four or five different Izumis in that scene where she gets shot. I thought the whole "I did not come back alone" bit was finally going to clarify it in some big reveal that changed everything, but it turned out it was just introducing a bunch of irrelevant people for her to kill to emphasize how much she cared. The combined ending lacked the impact every other one had.

>>8307820
>he's just jealous because AWSW gets updates more frequently than prequel

Yeah, there was a depressing moment where I realized this entire game was made within the span of time it's taken me to make a minigame update. I should go work on that.

>>
>>8313698
Hey Kaz. I was going to write a reply to the review, but it's probably better off here since I do agree with your reasoning behind making the review negative.

As far as the verbosity (and generally sometimes weird dialogue), I gave a lot of sympathy points to the writer for not being a native English speaker. It's clear he doesn't have a solid grasp of spoken English conversation flow, so reading it aloud is awkward.
The wallotexts just needed some refactoring and it'd be fine. I wish I participated in the backer forum. Maybe I could have prevented (among other things) Izumi's infodumps. Oh well.

The fact that the game cheaps out with the merged ending is, I believe, a result of building the game on Ren Py. Modbro would know more, but Ren Py is... Trying to work with, and a casual look at the code shows Saunders does not do programming for a living. It's basically a miracle the game is as complex as it is with so few bugs. I get the feeling a lot more was supposed to be possible, but Saunders couldn't make it work.

The hair change thing isn't the only mystery. A lot of things are shown which seemingly have no purpose, and a lot of plot points don't quite add up. I hope these are strong sequel or DLC hooks, and not holes. Just mysteries for now though.
>>
>>8313917
>hair change
I feel dumb saying this, but I never noticed the hair change when I played the game. What is it supposed to mean?
>>
>>8313966
My personal thought is that the Izumi we see isn't the true Izumi, but an imperfect rapid clone. That would explain a lot and fits straight into the narrative.
[tinfoilhat]I also think some powerful entity is controlling the turns of events through the game to a degree, and this person might not be Izumi. The AI being so conveniently corrupted and the often inconsistent behavior around how the portal works points to this.[/wildasstheory]

Yeah, I am expecting and hoping this stuff gets elaborated on. The part that I dislike isn't so much the presence of these mysteries as it is the points where it really looked like it was going to do something cool with them, and then didn't. Izumi saying "I wasn't the only one who came back" looked like it was going to be the reveal that explained the hair colors, or the Ixomen Sphere sounded like it was going to be the thing that changed your previous playthroughs (complete with Izumi noting you should hold onto it), and then it wasn't.

I don't want to give the creator a pass for using a difficult-to-use visual novel editor because I know from experience that it's very, very easy to make engines like that. Even if you don't want to do it yourself, any programmer would consider it easy work. For text, too, there are plenty of very skilled people who are willing to edit. If you pay them, they'll even do a good job.

What it ultimately comes down to, though, is that it has flaws that keep me from generally recommending it. I still hope that my review will prompt purchases from people who are into this sort of thing, and I actually bought it for a friend recently because I knew it would be down his alley. I think like half the fanart on the steam page is from artists in my stream, too.

If you pay them, they'll even do a good job.
it's clear that Saunders focused more on the story than the programming
renpy is a pretty archaic visual novel engine, yet it comes up when you do a search for "visual novel engine"
hiring a programmer would obviously cut into profits and may have slowed down the development of the game

It would look like a normal vent from the outside. The inside would just have both a vagina/oviduct and a phallus. If everything worked "correctly" then I assume the phallus could be everted or inflated like normal, however normal is for a dragon.

Self-fertilization would be a problem. I wonder how the dragons look at destroying fertilized eggs. At the point of laying, fertilized eggs aren't much more than a zygote floating in a yolk.

>I gave out steamkeys for the game when it came out, were you one of the people I gave it to?

Nah, like I said in the review, I basically just said I'd play the game if people in the stream gave me money. They not only did that, but gifted the game to me.

>If so neat, who was your favorite characters?

I don't know, "favorite" is a complicated concept. Bryce and Adine were enjoyable, if a little bland. Like, I think they'd be background characters in anything but a dating sim.

Remy and Lorem weren't really the sort of people I'd get along with, but they were an accurate and respectful portrayal of that sort of person (right down to the fucking "still in the planning stages" RTS game you don't actually want to hear about). I did love the fact that we blew a date with Lorem once by telling him deadlines were important. Like, I'm pretty sure we re-ran it with the same answers except that one, meaning it was actually marked as a negative disposition thing.

Anna was just a fucking mess, and I don't know if it was in a good or bad way. I like the fact that she existed and she was probably the most interesting character, but she was kind of a horrible person. She was one of the big reasons the ending and metagame bits disappointed me, since she was the only main character whose wellbeing pivoted on you saving humanity, yet saving her ended up just being a consequence of your actions rather than something you had to strive for.

>>8336985

>Bryce and Adine were enjoyable, if a little bland.
I fell head over heels for Adine specifically because of this. She's a normal person trying to do some good with her life, and she just happens to be a wyvern. Nothing complicated; no catches. The normalcy made me truly believe the character. Then again, biases abound: I'm a total sucker for a cute snoot and a big set of cuddling wings.

>What is your biggest regret?
>Um... Oh... I'm going to have to take dare for this one.
People say she's sunny and innocent, but the banana simply hides her bruises.

>Anna was just a fucking mess
We've had a couple threads worth of Anna psychoanalysis. The general consensus is she's an enormous victim of her own early success and lacks true social drive. The term sociopath has been thrown around, but a lot of debating has shown we really don't really know enough to pin specifically that disorder on her.
Her behavior is erratic though. If you've ever spent some time around a cluster b, you know she has some kind of personality disorder. If that's what Saunders was going for then he got it horrifyingly right.

I guess I can get why she inspires such waifufaggotry, yeah; she was cute and believable. I liked Bryce and to a lesser extent Lorem and Remy for about the same reason, though I would agree that Adine probably did it best.

I think Anna is going to be the character I remember the longest, though, just because every interaction with her was such a blind rollercoaster disaster from start to finish. The fourth date with her was probably my favorite part of the game, partly because she was written very well, and partly because it was one of the few places where the time travel mechanics came into play for me (I learned about her cancer on a previous playthrough where she died). Though, the game undermined this a bit by adding the envelope under the door as an alternate solution, which pisses me off.

Really, I think a lot of the stuff would've been more memorable and rewarding if it was ordered in such a way that solutions took multiple playthroughs. Like, having the police station scene occur after you need to give Adine the map, or Lorem taking the Ixomen sphere and giving it back to his roommate if you've gotten both of the pieces before the final day. That's probably why I got so into the game: because it came really close to doing something really cool, even if it didn't.
>>
I don't know about you guys, but I'll remember Anna simply because she pissed me off. I found her ending immensely disappointing. She's the one character who fucked up big time in the ethics department and gets away scot-free.

Adine was nice and in a way my complete antithesis, so while she's hard to bear at times I'll always want to hug her. That aside, there's just so much shit below the surface that I don't want a relationship.

Bryce drinks, and I don't. I respect him more than the baseline everyone deserves, but that's it.

Remy is literally me, if you replace sick girlfriend with suicidal parent and make him less diplomatic and more brutal. Naturally I want to hug and kiss and get banged by him.
>>
>>8353319
>fucked up big time in the ethics department
she tried to cure cancer, surely that's worth something. In her view the ends justify the means. Sure she did it to save herself but she would also save millions of others.

Morality is relative. Anna doesn't subscribe to her culture's moral standards, so she feels fully justified in her actions. In some cultures her acts would get her an award, and in others they would mean execution. But no matter how you cut it her research was valuable. You can be sure that a lot of people would be grateful for it later.
>>
>>8354258
My mistake, I was trying to talk about ethics instead of morality.
>>
>>8354273
Well I was using loose terms too for sake if discussion. If you want to define it rigidly, Anna fucked up in the erhical department. Her culture clearly doesn't agree with her actions at all, and I can't think of many human societies that would. Post apocalyptic human land would probably be completely okay with what she did, but they're under quite a bit more pressure to get results on their projects.
Morally she's not really that extreme. I know several people who would agree with her point of view, even though they would also agree that she can't just do that stuff without majority buy-in from the public.

To me that sounds like she has rejected personal morality believing it to be a cultural product, but ignoring the fact that ethics are not cultural, and that her behaviour is not merely immoral but unethical.
>>
>>8354417
Well first of all she's pretty erratic, so what she really "believes" is hard to pin down. She certainly has rejected her culture's ethics, but I believe this is a result of not being able to control her impulses. Her rejection comes from cognitive dissonance between what she believes, and what she's done. To protect her ego she decided to abandon ethical concerns and claim what she's done is justified.

>culture's ethics
Perhaps I'm taking this too seriously, and I'm aware this isn't an appropriate forum for discussing moral relativism but I feel it's relevant.
I don't think morality is relative. I think there are objective, moral truths that exist in the same way scientific and mathematical laws exists. There are some things that are objectively morally wrong, like slavery and violence. There may be exceptions to this (slavery can produce great works and violence can be justified) but this in no way invalidates the objectivity of morality, any more than an airplane violates the laws of gravitation.
Different cultures have different views on what is moral but that doesn't mean they're all correct, or that the truth lies somewhere in between. Rather some cultures can be simply wrong. In some Islamic countries, a woman can be beaten to death for revealing her face in public. A secular society posits no such law and therefore is objectively morally correct. How do I know which is right and which is not? One allows for the flourishing and happiness of concious beings, and the other does not - this is what defines moral.
It's the same as if one person believes the Earth was formed by magic 6,000 years ago, and another knows it was created by a process of natural forces 4.5 billion years ago. One is wrong and one is right. Why is it any different for the study of morality?
Anyways, the reason this ties into AWSW is that I think Anna is morally right in what she does. Sure she's an asshole to people, and she's done some bad things, but in the end, the world is better off for what she's done, and if that doesn't define "good" then I don't know what does.
>>
>>8355260
In philosophy, objective right and wrong is hard to find. Truth can be reduced to the quality of each side's arguments.

The strictest and most objective theory of ethics in existence is Kant's categorical imperative as outlined in the Groundwork on the Metaphysics of Morals, and going with Kant what Anna did very clearly was wrong.
>>
>>8355314
I'm not interested in philosophy or opinions. If I'm going to judge someone, I only care about facts. Can you find anything wrong with the phrase
>the world is better off for what she's done, and if that doesn't define "good" then I don't know what does.

I can.

Anna failed. She needed humanity to help her, her experiments didn't get anywhere.
Even if she would have succeeded, she would have done so using morally questionable (read: wrong) methods.

I do not believe the end justifies the means. I believe specific acts, if committed intentionally, are always wrong. It is always wrong to intentionally kill, or to intentionally steal.
>>
>>8355605
is it wrong to kill someone who is trying to murder your family?
>>
>>8355817
It is wrong not to try to stop that person.
It is also wrong to intentionally kill that person.
>>
>>8355838
What if the only way to stop them is to kill them, and that you know this, meaning that anything short of trying to kill them would not be a legitimate attempt at stopping them?
>>
>>8355904
Nothing changes.
>>
>>8355907
right, so that means that your ethics are internally contradictory and therefore aren't actually capable of prescribing right and wrong
>>
>>8355934
False.
It means that there are edge cases in which the system, or more accurately, my personal interpretation of it, falls apart, as is the case with any ethical system.

There will always be situations in which you cannot make a right choice.
>>
>>8355260
Morality is defined as your personal view, so no, it's not an absolute. Ethics are what defines what is "right".

Ethics aren't absolute either though. What is ethically correct depends on your goals. Humans are generally social animals, so we tend to structure our ethics around what is good for the many as well as what is good for the individual. Cultures have always thought they had it right, but we look back at the carnage and know they had severely misplaced ideals and terrible balance between the many/few. What makes you think your way is so right? Are you completely sure everything you believe is objective? I believe answering "yes" is arrogant. We cannot know what future generations will know that we don't.

>>8355521
What she did was reckless. Recklessness should not be rewarded. We don't even know if Amely has a cure within her. All we know is that she grew up in an orphanage when Remy 100% would have adopted her had he known, and that Anna did some funky shit to her DNA.

>>8355907
Essentially you're saying you shouldn't shoot a gunman who is killing innocent people even if you're a police officer. Say I found myself in this situation and killed the gunman. In your world, what would happen to me?
>>
>>8355958
You're over-rationalizing things. Any normal person would intuit that the right choice in that situation is to protect one's family at all costs. Ethical systems should accommodate intuition, not reject it; otherwise they lead to bizarre situations in which heroes are condemned as murderers and victims are regarded as perpetrators.

tl;dr: Kant was wrong about ethics and deontology by itself is false.
>>
>>8356081
In my world?
You'd have made a wrong decision. You have to live with yourself.
My subject is philosophy, not law.

>>8356110

>>
>>8356169
>Bold assumption
What assumption?

>a person who claims not to care about opinions
I'm not >>8355521
>>
>>8356169
I'll have to live with myself? I feel fully justified. If I ever doubted that, I'd need only go through the list of victims and know it would be bigger if I failed to act. If I didn't act, then I'd look at the same list and be in agony over who might not be on it if I did something. Your assumption of how I'd feel is very backwards.

Or are you talking more court of public opinion? Would society demonize me for my decision, even if I wasn't directly punished?
>>
>>8356203
I thought I was still talking to the same anon.

In any case, your assumption that Kant is wrong.
He tried - and I'd say he succeeded - to create a system of ethics that is as objective as possible. Intuition is fuzzy, subjective, and entirely unclear.
Of course there are holes. There are always holes, and they are not a reason to reject the system outright.
>>
>>8356219
I don't give a fuck about that.
Normative ethics concerns itself with whether an action is right or wrong, not what comes after.

As for my assumption, I made no assumption. I simply said you'd have to live with yourself.
You always have to live with yourself. You have to be able to believe that what you do is good, or at least the least evil, in order to live as a person.
>>
>>8356222
>>8356248
Not either of them, but does the fact that Amely was going to die without Anna's intervention make any difference?
>>
>>8356354
To me it doesn't. Anna didn't want to save her, she wanted a tool to use for her own ends.

Don't get me wrong, Amely dying would have been unfortunate. I can't call it "sad" because at that point she was still just a bunch of cells, but it most certainly would have been unfortunate.

It's an interesting problem, though. Amely was not yet a person when the incident occured, but she had the potential to become one, which makes preserving her life desirable.
On the other hand, Anna created something that she knew would have to deal with any side-effects of the gene therapy she applied for the rest of its existence, and evidently didn't give a fuck.
One could argue - and I won't - that the value of Amely's life has been decreased by taking part of her identity, and that she might grow up to find it not worth living.

My stance isn't that all my morals are right, for all I know, I could be wrong on many moral views. Rather my stance is that it's possible to *be* right or wrong. Yes, morals change from century to century, and culture to culture. But that doesn't mean there isn't a deeper truth we can eventually reach. We used to think slavery was okay, now we know it's not. We used to think the Earth was flat, now we know it's not. My stance is that these things are comparable. Maybe in the future we'll discover that some of our deeply-held beliefs about morality have been wrong, and we'll have to change them. Just like when we learn natural laws.
I'm going to do something I really hate and sign this post so people don't think I'm someone else and confuse my argument.
-M
>>
>>8355605
I'm confused. Are you arguing for an objective view on morality or not? If not, why are bad things *always* bad? Shouldn't there be some leeway? And if you are, I think that idea is incompatable with the idea that the ends don't justify the means. Is killing one person to save a hundred good or bad? It must be one or the other. What about the fact that you're using up valuable electricity (bad) in order to make an argument (even if it provokes interesting discussion), which is good? If you were simply letting the electricity (which could potentially power something more useful) go to waste, that would be bad. But you're doing something good with it. Do the ends justify the means?
>>
>>8356765
Morality is subjective.
Ethics should not be.

I believe in a system of ethics that is very rigid, mostly reliant on logic, and known as Kantianism.

The short version of Kantian ethics is: what we want to achieve isn't important, why we do something is.
The ends can't justify the means because they're irrelevant. All that matters is whether we did what we did out of (rationally restrained and directed) good will.

>What about the fact that you're using up valuable electricity (bad) in order to make an argument (even if it provokes interesting discussion), which is good?
Electricity doesn't have free will.
"Good" and "bad" as normative terms only apply to an action that is committed out of free will and affects another being capable of free will.
For example, if I run over a cat that's a sad thing, but it's not evil.
If I run over a cat to piss off its owner, that's evil - because not the cat, but the owner is the target.
If I run over a person, it's only evil if I do it on purpose. If it's an accident what I've done is unfortunate, but I was careless, not evil.

Okay, so you have a libertarian approach, where you have your beliefs, but wouldn't hold other to your standards? I can respect that. I believe your behavior is not optimal, and would be unstable if implemented on a wide scale, but I can absolutely see the view's ideals as good.

>>8356681
I hate to pull the nihilism card, but there is no universal fitness function. What we're really chasing is a personal feeling of good, and we realize this by trying to change our environment to match our internal ideal model. The personal feeling of good is 100% subjective and is driven heavily by our subconscious pathos. We are heavily influenced by the illogical underworkings of our brains, and you cannot cut that irrationality out of yourself. It's a large part of who you are and you wouldn't be human without it. My point is, there cannot be an absolutely correct solution to a problem that doesn't make any sense, and humans simply don't.
>>
people who use stupid nihilistic excuses to be a cunt are nerdy niggers and will be drowned in boiling water desu
>>
>>8357537
Holding others to these standards suggests that I believe my system to be universally correct, which I don't. It has its flaws, and while I believe they are negligible others may disagree.
>>
>>8357587
Who's being a cunt here? This is friendly deb8 m8. Appeal to nihilism has it's uses. It makes a good null hypothesis when someone gets overly uppity that their way of thinking is somehow objectively superior without backing claims up with facts.
