It does feel kind of bad, like, you see every artist complain about people who randomly ask if you can draw them. But, when requests come up, it's a fight between what I want to see, and what would be challenging to draw, or be something the artist would enjoy drawing. Thus it kind of feels bad to say "hey, draw this picture of someone you've never heard of, btw it's me"

Very few I imagine. If they have children play describing how their ancestors used to hunt and eat their fellow citizens, that kind of instills a certain degree of self-loathing and fear.

Imagine little Catmull being told in the older times he'd kill and eat his classmate and crush - let's call her Jenny.

Brain processes it into "onoz, I'm a monster", so my stance is most predators would be extra cautious to hige fangs/claws and avoid "predatory" behaviours, like growling or acting too aggressive because at the end of the day nobody wants to become a social outcasts, especially considering predators are a minority.

As weird as it sounds (and as much as anyone would probably doubt it) I don't like attention whoring. I like to put my work out there, but I don't like to scream 'Look at me! Look at what I'm doing!'.

That's not to say I don't love attention period. I clearly do. And if people like my OCs enough to draw them or request art of them, that's great! I just don't feel right dragging that attention to myself. If my work is enjoyed, people will produce fanart for it or request the OCs themselves. Trust me, I feel warm and fuzzy when they do. I'm just never the one to ask for it.

I do provide references if a request is made and I'm around though.

Also I should add while I rarely make requests in general, the few times I have were for other peoples' OCs.

from what I remember it's proto-proto-proto Judy so to speak, one of the switchboard assistant in the Spy Nick concept.

She's an agency employee, so she's kinda doing her job. I remember there was a short comic by Corris of her finding some crucial piece of evidence and chasing Nick down the corridor, papers in hand. Can't find it now, though.

When you're a literally who, you have to actually go ahead and design your OC, fur pattern, job, personality, etc
You have to get motivated to draw your own character or else no one is even going to have a ref to draw you
Once you get your own OC going and establish a name, people may draw you of their own accord
If an artist wants to draw OCs, they'll offer. They've done it before months ago, and people have also done art swaps/image for text swaps/etc
It helps that a lot of the artists here are making a career out of their art, so thinking yourself entitled to a piece of free work is pretty fucking self-absorbed

More thoughts on this, if I write something and then go to someone who is taking requests and say "draw this, its a scene from a story I wrote" and they have no idea what I am talking about, didn't read or didn't like my story, or just need me to provide references and images so they can copy it, then the picture won't be something that really means anything to the thing I was working on. It'd be like saying "Tell me what you thought about my story" rather than seeing people saying "I read this story and I would like to talk about it." Big difference.

Begging people to draw your OC is pretty bad, especially when the CC in question isn't taking requests. It just shows a lack of passion in your own character to be telling someone else to draw it. It's also sort of insulting considering that you're basically going up to them and asking for a free commission.

Then again, most of my points have been noted by other people. If yours gets drawn because a CC is legitimately interested in your work, then that's amazing.

I'm shy about requesting art because a bunch of things have to align. >>8267307 said it well - the artist wants prompting, and the requester would like to see something that interests them, but they don't want to be obnoxious about expectations.

I don't think there's harm in asking, if an artist has specifically made a prompt for requests. I kept it vague, though, to avoid that sense of expectation. I had Patch in mind, but we also just don't see many squirrels. I didn't provide any details, because the idea was to let Alec do what he wanted once he had a starting point.

And for what it's worth, this has been an unexpected help in firming up Patch's character in my writing. I've had the image open on one of my other screens all day while I work on his arc. So, if you're reading this, Alec, thank you again!
