How exactly would this scene be different if she was a cultist vs not? Her entire role as a cult member in the police is to lie to cover up their murders. "We investigated and found nothing" is a better coverup than not investigating at all.

I should've stayed at the bottom and let some other poor bastard make the discovery. But how could I ignore that godawful noise? That low, dull wailing, fitfully punctuated with high-pitched screams of grief. I couldn't bear it, and so I climbed the stairs.

The pictures on the wall told nothing out of the ordinary: your average domestic happy lesbian couple. But of course, these had all been taken years ago, back before Mae had to go away.

In the later pictures you could already see the dark and troubled expressions clouding her face. And then, after a point, there were no pictures. The most recent photo was dated nearly 3 years ago. Its frame was smashed and judging from the dent in the wall, it looked like somebody had thrown it with tremendous anger. It was the most recent picture of them. The last one taken before Mae was taken to the hospital.

As much as I tried to convince myself that this was just a normal domestic row, I knew in my heart that I... I wouldn't be ready for what lay behind that door.

And then I saw her. crouched over her croc body, blood everywhere. Up her arms. On the bed. Splattered across the wall and flecked across her face. Her limbs jutted out at broken angles, and her face... oh christ, her face. If it hadn't been their house, I wouldn't have known it was her. And there she was, just bawling her eyes out, still clutching the bloodied wooden bat, her face beetroot-red with rage, grief and bloody frenzy. Trying her best to push her mangled face back into some semblance of order, trying to smooth out the creases in her dress with her fumbling fingers.

Jesus christ, Mae. Two days. That's all you'd been out for. Two fucking days.

The mine was re-discovered twenty years ago. Mae happens to be exactly twenty years old. Mae's mom had a number of miscarriages before Mae was miraculously born. Her existence is tied to the black goat, right?

I know some people on here, and more people than that elsewhere, believe that there was no paranormal activity. That it was all gas. But I'm convinced the gas was a red herring. The cult describes the black goat's communication as singing and the newspaper article about the gas mentions the same singing.

We know that when the town was founded, it was founded over a poisoned spring. The mine was directly under that spring. That's also established, but I'm not sure if that strengthens or weakens my argument about the gas.

Somebody said that the fourth hangout is based on who got the most hangouts earlier. If this is true, then I think the best path through the game is: Bea -> Bea -> Gregg -> Bea.

You would do the ghost hunts with Angus and Gregg. I feel like the third Gregg hangout is important for him. He's in a bad spot and is seeking validation. I don't feel like ignoring him completely is something a good friend would do, and the third Bea hangout ends badly no matter what you do. It may give Mae more insight into the struggles that Bea is going through, but I feel like missing that fight isn't the worst thing in the world.

This is probably the most balanced approach, and the one that treats your friends best with the limited water you have, to borrow the mom's metaphor.

I'm not sure if the patch is out on PS4 yet. But I might end up doing one more "complete" playthrough. I feel like this is the way that I would do it.

It's honestly hard to say what would be the objectively best way to handle the three hangouts because the third hang out is the most important for both characters. Bea's third gives Mae an insight on how Bea has been feeling as well as what shes been dealing with and Mae gets a better idea of why Bea is the way she is now compared to how she remembered her, and Gregg''s third hang out is definitely an important one for both Gregg and Angus. However you can also consider that Gregg and Angus would eventually patch things up themselves with limited interaction with Gregg because Gregg can realize that he's not really doing crimes with Mae anymore and Angus can remind him that its time to move on like he was while Mae was gone to college (since he mentions being clean of crimes for a long time), and missing that insight into Bea's life and personality would kind of leave a gap between the two as Mae never really learns why Bea is the way she is.

Personally I feel like all three Bea hang outs works out really well because it rekindles that friendship they once had (especially since Gregg and Mae are still close despite the long absence) except now under new light as the two really learn more about each other and how they both have fucked up lives in their own different ways. Not to mention focusing on one of the two is the only way to get the ending band practice where Mae and either Gregg or Bea can really talk about how they went through everything together the last two weeks and talk about things in more detail.

tl;dr the third hang out is pretty much important for both Bea and Gregg and is really hard to say which one is more important. Bea needs that venting and Gregg needs a third party's opinion. I prefer all 3 on Bea because Gregg has Angus and Angus will probably kick Gregg into gear if he gets too out of hand, but Bea doesn't have anyone and can really use the strong bond.

In the path I laid out, Mae will have told Bea about the shapes and why she left college. Bea would no longer resent Mae. No, she definitely will think Mae is still pretty immature. She has a better insight on why Mae does the things she does but that doesn't change the fact that Mae is still somewhat the same except now without the mind fucks and nightmares constantly. Its the other way around. Mae will have no choice but to hang out with Bea. Jackie doesn't live in possum springs, yet Bea still gets out for those parties that Jackie holds for her. I imagine Bea and Jackie talk online so she still has that. Angus and Gregg are in a relationship, that takes communication and trust and eventually the two will have to talk about whats been going on. Not to mention them moving means Gregg will most likely drop crimes all together again without Mae there to influence him and Angus would be overall more happy when that happens, thus patching up their relationship. Gregg and Angus' relationship isn't really Mae's problem. She makes it her problem by hanging out with Gregg. Bea, on the other hand, can remain a recluse about herself and Mae would just be a way to distract herself from her problems, rather than talk about them and vent.

Everyone is so quick to go all-in on Bea while leaving Gregg neglected. Going back weeks, everybody is balls deep in that crocodile's storyline. Angus and Gregg's future is anything but certain, and helping Gregg out when he was at a very low point may just give him the resolve to do things better to keep their relationship intact. Gregg needed to know that he was a good person. That he was actually worthy of Angus' love. Without Mae, those doubts will continue to eat away at him. He needed somebody to vent to, just like Bea.

Here's the thing, Mae learns about Bea giving up her dreams of college at the dinner, so Mae will not learn that if you don't do the dinner hang out. On top of that Bea will absolutely never ever open up to Mae, that's not the kind of person she is. Gregg, on the other hand, still has Angus. Sure Gregg hits a low point in the third hang out and asks Mae for her opinion but Bea's entire life is currently at a low point. No, the game works on a best of 3 formula. Whoever you hang out with more gets the 4th hang out, 2 out of 3. But the third hang out is important for both parties, but honestly its more important for Bea than it is Gregg. Gregg has some insecurities pop up because hes been acting out and its been upsetting Angus. Its his own problems that he caused himself that ultimately he'll have to work out himself with Angus. Bea, on the other hand, has nobody at all to vent to, and nobody knows anything about her problems except Jackie who assumingly only knows that Bea likes to go to college parties and feel alive every now and then.

By hanging out with Gregg, all you do is give him a little pep talk, which he could use, but one again I reiterate, he still has Angus. He'll still have to work things out himself at home with Angus. Mae is just a third wheel if you focus on Gregg, or just in general really with these two.

By hanging out with Bea on the third one, Mae gets insight on Bea's problems and really learns a lot about Bea. Their bond can become stronger because of this because otherwise Bea just learns about Mae and it becomes more of a one way friendship where Bea can sympathize with Mae but Mae doesn't really sympathize with Bea. She just kind of has a feeling that Bea isn't doing too good lately but doesn't know why or try to understand because its never the topic on hand at any other moment in the game. Learning more about Bea gives Mae a reason to get closer and be a way for Bea to cope and vent rather than Bea being an old friend she can hang out with when shes bored.

If you want to think about it with an analogy, Greggs house is flooded and could use some help, but Bea's house is on fire and definitely needs more help than Gregg. At least, that's the way I see it.

I think there's a case for both characters. I personally lean towards the Bea route myself but Gregg's route helps Mae as much as it helps Gregg. Mae with Bea is mostly just helping Bea, which is fine, and while Gregg's route might not be as big a change for Gregg as it is for Bea, Mae definitely grows as well throughout it.
She has to come to terms with the fact she's growing up, and so is Gregg, and not only that, but Gregg is leaving. They're not teenagers anymore, if they get caught doing crimes they go to jail now. And the beacon of hope and familiarity with Gregg she in part came home for is leaving for a new town. It's not super far away, but Mae has no method of travel on her own and no money to buy a bus ticket, and I'm sure her parents would only be able to stomach so much leeching to go hang out. Even on that, Angus doesn't dislike Mae, but third wheel you know? You don't want to constantly hang out with your partner's friend, you want to spend a lot of time along with your partner.

Gregg's route grows both him and Mae. Bea's route helps Bea cope but Mae herself doesn't change all that much.

Both routes are good in their own ways, i just personally believe the full Bea route is best. Just has a stronger emotional impact on the story and a better bond for Mae. Also I expect Bea would help Mae eventually grow more as an adult since shes a pretty good influence and role model when it comes to responsibility and such, such as making Mae return the stolen belt buckle and such.

As for Mae leeching, I have a firm belief that regardless of what route you take, Mae will take the title of LORD OF THE SNACK FALCONS once Gregg moves out. Either that or she'll work at the video store which would support a stronger friendship with Lori which is also cool.

I will say that I like how Bea recognizes how much of a screwup the small-town doctor has been and offers to help Mae find better help for her problems. Even during the second hangout, which is considered to be the least impact, Bea is clearly taken aback by how the doctor told Mae to repress her issues.

Gregg is suffering from his own mental ailments and can't really help Mae deal with hers. Bea is depressed, but she's mentally sound enough to be able to know something is really wrong with the way Mae has been treating her problems. Gregg doesn't comment on any of that, from what I remember.

However the two in the end share a very strong emotional bond as they learn more about the other and gain sympathy for each other. They both learn that they're both suffering in their own way and the least they can do is be there for one another. Be a shoulder to lean on and know that they can lean on the other. Stuck together but don't suck together.

I don't really get what would you ever want. Like is there something that is like really really really relevant to the plot that you just need to know, that you won't be let down in the end after it's revealed to you?

I felt that the real climax was the cat-god dream, and after that it was just wrapping up, but in a good kind of respectable way. I don't really care who the cultists are, or w/e the fuck happened to Casey, because adding these plot points in a respectable way would probably mean another 4-5 hours of gameplay, and god the 10-15 hours that are there took 3 years to make, and they still crunched and stuff. I feel like they just want to take a break for now.
