We've put ghost types into three different groups.
Non-Amnesiacs: A ghost pokemon that carries all the memories of it's past life with it, without any outside source of help.

Amnesiacs: A ghost pokemon that forgets it's past life. Usually they can be coaxed back into remembering though a bit of hard work. Use of family members or valued items is the easiest way.

True Specters: These ghost pokemon cannot be coaxed back into remembering their past life. Sometimes they take on a new personality and other times they act like the typical ghost type. Haunting trainers and picking abandoned facilities to claim as their own.

I've only met a couple ghost types, one of them remembers his past life and how he died, I'm not sure about the other one.

Apparently there are also ghost types that hang around the S.S.Libra wreck, but I haven't seen or talked to any of them.

Suicide usually seems to put people/pokemon into either the Amnesiac or True Specter category.
Though suicide with the intent to become a ghost almost 100% of the time yields Non-Amnesiacs. You wouldn't believe the amount of people that walk into a forest intending to become a Trevenant.

Gastly/Haunter/Gengar usually come from an extremely violent death. Murder or an especially violent suicide.
Alolan Marowak seem to only come from the death of a normal Marowak. The notes on the ghost Marowak in Lavender Town may have been one of the earliest spottings of one.
Midreavus seem to be murders upon prejudice usually. Witches, Pagans and such.
Sableye are usually affiliated with the death of someone who is extremely greedy. Rare cases seem to be people who die in mines.
Shuppet and Banette are usually people who die attached to an object. They tend to keep that object with or inside them.
Duskull usually stem from suicide. Fairly simple.
Notes on Drifloon are still in the works.
Frosslass are usually deaths from freezing to death. Whereas Rotom come from an obsession with technology or dying of electrocution.
Yamask are usually desert based deaths. Frillish are water based deaths, as are Dhelmise.
Litwick usually come from death by fire or in rare cases the "soul succ" from a member of said family.
I think most people know how Trevenant and Honedge come about?
Pumpkaboo aren't really my area.
I know Sandyghast come about from desert/beach deaths.

Mimikyu... We're still researching Mimikyu.
