It would be if the writeanon hadn't specifically spelled out in their pastebin and in the thread the reasons their Undyne differs from the Undyne in the game. The people here seem to have generally accepted those reasons as being reasonable enough, but if you disagree you can always ask the writeanon to write a story featuring 'game Undyne,' read someone else's stories, or just not read them at all.

Writefag here. No idea if you're still around, but I woke up and read this sitting in bed. Pretty good stuff. Overall this was decent, there aren't any major issues. I think personally I would have preferred a little more detail, but that's why I write the way I do. I don't think it's an issue that you do things different, that's just personal preference. One thing to be careful of is re-using the same word in close proximity - for instance you use 'chuckles' as a dialogue tag twice in two lines and it really jumps out at the reader when you do that. I think there are a few other points where stuff like that happens but I can't remember any off the top of my head.

Don't describe things as 'almost' this or 'almost' that. It's a lazy way of avoiding just saying what you're trying to say. For instance, you say that the light from the TV 'almost' makes Undyne's scales glow - what does that even mean? How does something 'almost' glow? It works a lot better if you just cut that out and say that they glow, or whatever.

You have a tendency to use these short little bursty sentences. "You know the way this show ends. You're glad she's enjoying herself. You're also glad she hasn't noticed you've been stealing glances at her all night." Personally, I would have found it a lot more enjoyable if you'd managed to cut those down into longer sentences that incorporate multiple ideas at once; every time you throw a period in you're forcing the reader to stop, just for a second, and if you do it a lot it can get jarring. Maybe that's the effect you're going for but it didn't seem like it and otherwise I think that's an area for improvement.

You don't do the typical form of telling, but you do something almost as bad. Here's an example: "She says in a frightening, yet slightly arousing tone." Now, personally, I have no idea what that would sound like. (continued)

Those are two very opposite ideas, you know, and it's not something I've personally heard before, so I don't really have a frame of reference. Instead of describing how her tone of voice is frightening and arousing at the same time, you're just saying that it is and hoping that you can get away with it. You might be able to, but it's not a habit you want to get into. Describe the quality of her voice and the main character's reaction to it and you'll get your point across in a much more meaningful way than just saying 'this is frightening and arousing.'

Your writing gets less dynamic the further into the story you go, and I assume that's because you powered through all four hours of writing this without taking breaks. You probably understand why I only write shorter stuff for this thread and if I do write long stuff, I take a few days to do it, huh? At some point you want to get done more than you want to write a good story. This was especially obvious around the sex scene, that's about the turning point where it's really obvious, and while I applaud you for not writing one-handed, I still would have preferred you took a break, went and did something else, and came back with fresh eyes; I think that would have made the end product a lot better, especially if you don't bother editing (which I totally don't blame you for, I do the same thing). So yeah, the sex scene was a little un-dynamic and a little less descriptive than I would have liked, which is disappointing considering it's probably what a lot of people were reading for.

Personally, I really hate euphemisms for the penis, and you seem to deal in those exclusively, but that's just a personal thing. You don't have to try and keep coming up with new ways to say the same thing; if you read my stuff I just call it a cock all the time and nobody minds. Same thing goes with dialogue tags, you can just use 'said' for each of them...(continued again)

Maybe throw in a 'laughed' or 'grinned' or whatever every now and then for variety, but it's really the one exception to the rule I mentioned above, where you don't want to use the same word twice in a short span. If the alternative is coming up with progressively stupider ways to say the exact same thing, just stick to one and it'll read better.

I think I would have liked a few less ellipses during the sex scene. I find that they tend to slow things down more than anything else, and while that can be useful in some cases I think it might not have been appropriate here.

Okay, those are the major issues. The characters had a nice dynamic with each other and it was a cute read, but the last thing I'd caution you about is topic. This is very, very similar to my stuff. I'm definitely not saying that you can't write about the same things I'm writing about, but I think that, you know, you have an opportunity to diversify here and you don't want to get put into the same pigeonhole as me, you know? And please believe I'm not like saying this out of selfishness or anything, I'm not, I just think that a lot of people will be thinking 'oh, well, we already have one person who does reader x Undyne, why do we need another' and I think that there's a pretty big niche to be filled with like Alphys x Undyne stuff or whatever. You can write whatever you like, but it's something to think about.

Overall, this was a good story. There's still room for improvement and I hope that you do try and improve, but for fanfiction I'd say that this is definitely good enough.

Wow. Thank you for the constructive criticism. This was literally the first fanfiction I've ever written, so I was popping my cherry too last night, so to speak. You're right about it getting more rushed toward the end. It wasn't entirely because of me being tired, though. I'm very inexperienced writing sex scenes, and I was worried I might not do too well. Honestly, I would have loved to make it longer, and be far more descriptive while I was at it, but I also wasn't sure what the length of a typical fanfiction was. I'm also definitely not trying to copy you, but after actually reading one of you stories I see what you mean. The style (while executed less well by yours truly) is pretty similar. This was actually really interesting to write because it was such a balancing act, portraying a frightened Undyne, I mean; I feel like this is another one of those stories that /utg/ would hate but I think that it fits pretty well with Undyne's character. While it was fun to read as usual, I still have a tough time imagining Undyne being scared by something like that. I could see her being scared about things happening to others, but she never struck me as being terribly concerned for her own safety.

I actually had it going for that angle to start with, but I figured that wasn't very original so I went back and changed it. If you look, it's less a thing about her being afraid for her own safety and more a fear of being powerless, but I think I could have made that more obvious. It's partly because of where it comes up in the conversation, since Brill is tired and she just cuts Undyne off and tells her to come over, dummy. I agree with you, but I think I could have made it more clear that what really gets her rattled is the idea that she can't fight back, or that it's hopeless. I think that's basically the one thing that'd frighten Undyne; I imagine she's never actually been in or thought about a situation like that.

I visit every single day at varying hours due to changing shifts at work to catch up on what's happening and to read the latest whatever the writefag has done. I would draw more Undynes for you guys but one of my IRL friends saw some of my Undyne stuff and suddenly asked me if I'm taking commissions. I wouldn't dare to take money for these doodles but I promised to try his simple sfw request of drawing whatever videogame characters I feel like so that they might possibly use them at some point on their upcoming youtube channel so now I spend most of my free time doing that. It's a bit of an uphill battle at the moment because I'm pretty new at this and don't have a lot of experience with other things except Undertale.

Indeed you can make money with it but drawing is more of a hobby for me and I'm not all that talented to be perfectly honest. I'm not even actively trying to get better or anything. I just like to have fun with drawing and I'm pretty glad I have the modesty to not accept payment for this because otherwise I'd feel bad about it constantly. Now I don't owe anyone anything and can draw in relative peace. Relative because I still stress about doing at least a decent job even if I didn't take payment for it.

If I one day happen to find the motivation to learn shading and stuff then maybe I'll slowly start to consider it.
