It's not so much the anime style itself that's the problem. It's that entry level artists try to emulate it without learning the fundamentals first. I know because this is how I started too, emulating styles without learning what made them what they were. Granted I was literally 10 when I started drawing.

I did have to 'unlearn' a lot of things, but at the same time it's not the style that causes it. The style is a result of learning the fundamentals.

Basically he shouldn't be blaming anime so much as blaming his younger self for thinking emulation is the smartest way to go. Justified if you're a kid when you start, so I don't see why he'd be ashamed of that.
