It's allllllllllllll practice. Talent helps get your foot in the door, but it's more like extra bonus points in your circle skill when starting a new character. Anyone can grind enough to reach the level cap if they work at it.

The most important thing is to have the drive to keep drawing those circles, honestly.

Thanks! I probably did use ctrl-z about a hundred times.

I kinda switched between using vectors and hand drawing.
The vectors looked too sterile and couldn't match the rest of the image, so I wound up doing it by hand instead.
I did use gimp's line smoothing, but even then I still had kinks.
Using a trackpad probably didn't help though.

Any other tips? Favorite tools or programs?

Not them, but I can say right away that your biggest issue is with depth and contours; eyes are not a single circle.

Find the method you're comfortable with and stick with it. If you like using a trackpad then keep practicing with it until you get the lines you want. Of course, if you're not sure feel free to try other methods like a regular mouse or pen and paper or whatever else intrigues you, just have to find the tool that works for you. A big expensive drawing tablet or 80 dollar pens won't do you any good if you're not comfortable using them.

Personally, I have a tablet and do most of my sketches in OpenCanvas and then finish with colors in Sai, or photoshop if I need text or special after-effects.

Art imitates life, so you do want to try to copy things, but you want to try to copy real life things first. I started with just drawing faces in magazines and such for funsies, then started to imitate artists I liked (Stellos, Duo Radon, ect ect). Once you learn the "rules" of how things are built, you'll be better able to bend and break them to your will.

I've been treading that road for years now. I find it took me to a different place than I expected.
While I maintain a policy of posting my art only once on /trash/, I've since seen most of it continue to circulate (this is how I gauge the quality of my work, you see). Considering people liked my stuff enough to save and repost it, I must assume that I have since gained this 'power' to give life to fantasies, like you said.
However... I find little pleasure in them myself.
It's probably because every finished project is something that I've spent hours and hours and hours staring at, drawing, tweaking, erasing, and re-drawing over and over.

But...
People replied. People saved them. People re-posted them. Just as the many artists that had enraptured me in the past with their ability to render fantasy alive, I have now done the same for others.
And that's good, isn't it?

Always look up more ways to improve your drawings. Practice your basic shapes, perspective, and human anatomy. I'm sorry I can't offer more, but this is just what I gleaned from other artists' advice.
