I'm not that good with socializing, so when I noticed the potential 'sheepish' pun I ran with it. I'd say try and do something along the lines of that, finding a species that can compliment your character as a person.

I literally just drew the reference for this today after making the thread "how do I make a fursona that's not shit?" I looked at the chart >>7584584 posted because someone linked to it in that thread and I got either insects (scaly, land) or eastern dragons (scaly, flying) but I didn't want to be a dragon 'cause dragons can come off as quite obnoxious most of the time so I chose an insect with my favorite insect being a moth, I thought it'd be cool 'cause I haven't seen many other moths

I created this species many years ago after a DS9 episode where the crew was crawling around through maintenance tunnels killing alien rats. Why not hire an alien that is naturally low slung? Since I liked wolverines, I stretched one, added a middle set of legs and some alien touches like weird paws and teeth and ended up with something that looked like a giant ferret. Eventually I found the furry community and used the species as the basis for my character because I was on a government computer and I figured no one would hit on a nonanthropomorphic fur. Naturally I was wrong.

Problem is, furries are more likely to have weirder fetishes so you are more likely to meet somebody more unhinged, more disgusting than an average furry with such a character. Really, it's more likely people will think you have such character over own fetishes not in hopes of decreasing it's appeal.

To begin:
Most fursonas are normally naturally colored or colors that the person likes.

if you don't wanna end up in snowflake territory, keep the colors in a natural range and make sure that if it has any markings, they are markings the animal would normally have.

If you don't care about snowflake shit, then a good color scheme is always the first step. Markings can have all sorts of varying shapes and designs if you don't care about a natural look or wanna take into consideration the human aspect and include freckles, birth marks, pimples etc.

Also consider the fursona/OCs personality. Happier OCs will tend to have brighter, warmer colors, female OCs usually have colors like purples, pinks, softer colors. Maybe the OC has a theme. EX: Night, so blues, dark purples, blacks, maybe whites/yellows to represent celestial bodies.

There's a lot of options at hand. As long as you like the turn out, fuck what other people say. They'll probably end up wanting to fuck it in the end anyway.

I think it's a 50/50 thing and depends on how human you want the character to be. That's why some people choose human feet and hands over paws.
Some people bitch and cry if the animal wouldn't normally have hair, but I mean, the character already acts and is built like a person so, there's no such thing as realism with furries.

I know some people will have them as wigs that the character wears or fur that has been grown out and styled into a hairdo
