A desert region is under threat from both bandits and magic religious extremists. The hunter's guild (placeholder name, shut up) chapter in the region is defunct and its employees no longer work for the government making an offensive on the bandits. Several religious groups have now been united under one prophet and are mobilizing.

One character, Tala, served in the navy before taking a spiritual journey across the desert with some nomads. She arrives back in civilization permanently a few years later and takes up work in a smithy/repair shop. Everything is fine and dandy for her until the real Tala's body is found. Not that she knew she was an imposter.

She's one of the less tragic characters but suffers throughout her journey.

A space elevator would be great to have but it'd be so ridiculously difficult to build and maintain, I don't know if would ever be worth it. I think Single-Stage-To-Orbit ships are the future. They'd be the most cost-effective way of getting a payload to orbit.
