It's fairly dark, but it's more of a realistic kind of fiction. it was written in 1896 by H.G. Wells, so it's not exactly whimsical. While not too long, the older way of writing can be a bit odd/confusing, and it's best not to get too attached to any of the characters.

The animal people in it aren't like standard furry affairs, but are much more grotesque and animalistic in looks and behavior made through vivisecting animals and reshaping them to a more human form while altering their brains. While a very weird and melancholy story, it's pretty intriguing, and I'd suggest it to anyone with an interest in an older depiction of human-animal hybrids.

The "bara" term is rather subjective and there's hardly a general consensus on what is considered "bara", just like the term "furry".

In my opinion, I think the only two things that defines bara or not is if some character has muscles, real muscles, and if the relantioship and sex are gay. Masculinity helps too, but I have seen characters who have great muscles, but act normally and don't really show the features of how a male would act with masculinity.
