Endtown pic/discussion thread, Christmas Misgivings Edition
Merry Christmas, people.
Apologies to PenAnon for the use of yet another one of his pieces as the OP image, but I couldn't resist.

Merry Marxmas
I miss when trash threads were just about porn and no Hollyfag butthurt
>>6869507
You don't have to specify that the threads are "talky". I expect more people to come here as the /co/ thread gets worse, if they don't just drop the comic.
I just hope the main shitposter stays there. I suspect he's already trying to cause trouble here, as you can see in the post above this one but we just have to ignore it and it'll go away (please be smarter than our /co/mrades).
>>6869669
>You don't have to specify that the threads are "talky". I expect more people to come here as the /co/ thread gets worse, if they don't just drop the comic.
Alright, I just felt those three recent threads stood out because that's pretty much what's been happening. Speaking of dropping, should we discuss other comics in the genre this thread, whether as alternatives or companion comics? I'd like to put forth Gone With The Blastwave...
http://www.blastwave-comic.com/
>we just have to ignore it and it'll go away (please be smarter than our /co/mrades).
Wise words.
>>6869669
Oh please, just because i don't agree with any of you, doesn't mean i'm trying to start shit. The threads used to be much better when they were just about lewds that would get people banned from /co/, we used to have random drawfags who never read the comic before and dump a pic or two, now it's nothing but an echo chamber for holly talk and Aaron bashing.
>>6869761
I like how the setting and actions of the characters are taken seriously but the characters themselves don't. I've been reading it for a while now too, got introduced to it by a now defunct slice-of-life/gag-a-day comic about the author and his friend/room-mate.
>waifufaggotry in the last thread
I fucking hate this shit. This bullshit excuse that anyone who has even the slightest bit of criticism is somehow invested into a waifu character.
>>6870039
Do you think it should have ended on that April Fools comic?
>>6870012
Bashing Aaron? Yes, someone here says "the comic was never good Aaron is a hack" every now and then but most of us simply agree that there was a quality drop without taking it that far.
Holly talk? That's just you.
>>6870130
No, simply because I don't want it to end yet. I know many argue it's a perfect ending but I think there is no such thing.
>>6870130
>go back to read april fool's
>when the comic was still good
What the fuck happened, Anons? It just gave me chills all over. It's like Aaron just... gave up. I'm so fucking disappointed.
>>6870136
>Holly talk? That's just you.
the archive is there.
>>6870457
>We were actually talking about GWtBW.
He obviously reads niether comic, just here fishing for replies.
>>6870758
Fuck you, bitch.
I honestly don't get what it is with cunts like you making sweeping judgements like this. "oh lol aren't you aware of this stupid fucking random in-meme me and some other guys have, obviously you aren't a REAL fan".
I'm just here to talk about the comic. Not to engage in your shitty, little circlejerk about who is a proper fan or not. Because that's just what I do. And really, "fishing for replies"? What kind of a fucked up world do you live in that people come to a webcomic thread in /trash/ and "fish for replies"? Are you retarded? Or autistic? Or both?
>>6869761
Has anyone else been reading Jamil's comic?
http://www.taleofjaspergold.com/
>>6870990
I do. I'm still thinking of what kind of fanart to do other than Jasper and Maude nudes.
Want to do something SFW.
>>6870990
I have. It's pretty damn nice - Jamil has a gift with inking and character design. The story's still just getting started, but I hope it gets storytimed on /co/ soon, it deserves the attention.
I'm flattered you guys used my pic as the OP pic again and you kept the file name. Do you have any requests [spoilers don't work on /trash/] that aren't lewd [/I still know spoilers don't work on /trash/]
>>6871104
Walt as Santa with Dottie on his shoulder as the cutest elf ever?
>>6871070
I don't think Jamil minds the nudes.
>>6871088
I think it has picked up well already, we just need this chapter to finish and it'll be easy to recommend.
>>6871104
>>6871126
I second that.
>>6871166
More so as promo/advert rather that "OH NO HE WILL MIND IT."
I really don't have the same gut feeling as I had with Aaron.
>>6871211
I'll never understand your reasoning. "I don't know the guy but I'll make porn based of his work -wait now I know him and he's okay with it so I won't do it anymore".
>>6871070
A "Happier Times" pic of Jasper and his daughter?
Luellen and Maude in a city cafe?
The vulture gang robbing a stagecoach?
Costume swaps of Endtown and JG characters?
>>6871166
Oh yeah, the story's going fine, I just think the current chapter's going to deliver some important wordbuilding, so yeah... I say wait for the end and then start a thread for it.
>>6871104
Jim dressed up as Ms.Claus!
>>6871258
It's not logical reasoning, believe me. With Aaron there was a gut feeling about "He is upset that he's not getting what he wants." and with Jamil I don't feel the same.
>>6871088
>Jamil has a gift with inking and character design.
He just seems to have a problem with heads, he either makes them a bit too big or the facial features have a wrong perspective. He doesn't seem to have this problem with reptiles, though. He always draws Allie perfectly.
>>6871568
That's a fair point, though I do think that his work on his comic is sharpening his skills in that department. If you compare the first pages to the most recent illustrations, I think there's a marked improvement.
>>6871777
>>6871978
cute as fuck!
>>6871259
All good ideas. I planned a film poster too. I just need to do it right.
>>6871978
>Walt never got his maid costume
>>6871978
Cool.
>>6871978
Nicely done, PA. As expected, Dottie makes a super-cute elf, and Walt's got exactly the right shape to be Santa.
>>6871568
>He always draws Allie perfectly.
Well, he Is an Alliefag

>>6873881
YES.
fuck, i never get tired of Allie
>>6871288
>"He is upset that he's not getting what he wants."
Why would he be upset? It's not like you owed him.
>>6871166
>I don't think Jamil minds the nudes.
This. I don't think I've ever seen him complain or mention his dislike for lewds. He seems pretty okay with it.
Do you ever get the feeling people are trying to make fake drama with Poppy threads and Endtown threads?
I read both, but if I have a problem with Aaron, I'm not going to say Morbi is better, or vice-versa. Meanwhile in the /co/ Endtown thread, there was a huge Ewe La-La derail.
>>6874575
Call it a gut feeling. Like when you look at a well-behaved child that got a present under the tree that he didn't like. He will not scream and cry but will do that face with a soft "T... thanks". That's pretty much what I felt. And the fact in a lot of time he tried to force his perception of characters "These are the unlikeable guys, why do you like them" I felt like he was trying to steer the community into producing fanart that he would want to see.
>>6876096
That had nothing to do with fandom rivalry, it was about that Ewa Lala chapter. Those two cause the same derail wherever they are.
>>6876834
>"These are the unlikeable guys, why do you like them"
How did he do that? Jim seemed pretty good for what happened to him.
>>6876834
>I felt like he was trying to steer the community into producing fanart that he would want to see
That's just dumb. From your part, I mean.
All he has ever asked for is Kirbee fanart, at least according to KC (because Aaron asked him for it). And while he doesn't like certain characters that other people do, he's never asked us to stop liking them. I can see how you'd get that from how he talks about them but that's like saying every time someone talks about what they don't like they're asking you to stop liking it.
> And while he doesn't like certain characters that other people do, he's never asked us to stop liking them. I can see how you'd get that from how he talks about them but that's like saying every time someone talks about what they don't like they're asking you to stop liking it.
I think after all that was said here in the last few days I can understand why Aaron saying that had a bigger impact than any other artist. Given Aaron's insistence on things that are apparent to him but not to us.
>>6881710
Does Aaron even like Linda? He has it out for topsiders
>>6881874
Oh yes he does, he voted for her during the Swimsuit contest

Can I get some before and after proof that Aaron started drawing Kirbee as heavier and bustier? I didn't notice a difference, but other people say there is one.
>>6886121
>>6886204
>Tail stores hat

Page 10
>>6886238
It's possible that's the intent, but there's actually a very short span of time between those two panels - less than a day, I think - so if true that's one hell of a metabolism, especially since all she had in that time was whatever she could grab in the fake diner.
>>6887961
Sure as hell doesn't feel like a day
>>6888030
That's probably because the flashback itself showed slices of multiple days from Holly's prewar life while stretching IRL over multiple months.
Unless the latter is what you were alluding to.
>>6886204
>Kirbee's saggy tits

>Kirbee and Wally, front and center
>Glimpses of artfully arranged notes in the background
>Something about Holly
>Something about "code"
>Something about "story"?
All very deliberate on multiple levels. I don't suppose anyone wants to try and decipher that handwriting? Aaron could almost be a doctor, with a note-taking hand like that...
>InB4 the reference to Holly turns out to be someone bemoaning the lack of it at Christmas time in Endtown as a meta joke.
Question: Does anyone else ever get the feeling that Aaron's chosen panel format sometimes hamstrings the comic?
Like... if a given page in a looser format would work better as one big panel, or a panel would work better having a page all to itself... you'll still get a page with four panels in this comic. Likewise, if something would work better as a page of eight smaller panels, then it either gets compressed into four panels in this strip, or gets two days worth of four larger panels...
>>6893750
>>6896644
Kazen, More Allie when?
More nails and meta-commentary. Looks like this was the dialogue in the notes, above.
Hey it's still Christmas here
>>6897498
Man the oracle's attendant looks kinda uncomfortable.
>>6897784
Well, they're in proximity to naked Marx. That's got to be, like, cosmically gross and uncomfortable.
Also, cute Allie, man.
>>6897804
Thanks
>>6897498
>Mr. Marx, sir, is it necessary to strip in front of me?
>Yes, and there's something else you should know.
>Sir?
>CANNONBALL!
>>6897498
At this point I just don't understand what's the point. The audience was promised Christmas in Endtown on Christmas and we're wasting time on this.
/co/ thread has become bastion of people that will jump onto anyone that dares criticizing the comic. I now can understand why few of the drawfags jumped the ship, they could smell it a mile away.
>>6898048
You're spoiling us, dude.
>>6899554
At this point I'm wondering if Aaron became aware of the sentiment that Christmas in Endtown didn't have to be right on IRL Christmas and that there were people who would like him to expand on Holly's ending a bit... and instead of getting, say, Holly's side of things like some people were asking for, we got this, instead.
I'll note that due to being locked to an MWF schedule there was never going to be an actual strip on Christmas Day, though. So I guess it was Christmas on Aaron's Desktop, in the end.

Probably fairly soon, once we get to actual Endtown happenings.
>>6900106
The drawfags jumped ship because the mods kept targeting the Endtown threads, deleting pics, and banning artists. DK showed back up again a little while ago and drew pic which was almost immediately taken down.
Waifuwars and shitposting has filled the vacuum left by what the mods have taken away. The whole waifuwars (at least in the beginning) where a couple of autists and few trolls that kept feeding off of each other, and are in noway the majority. One thread this summer only had 16 posters but had over 250 post of nothing but Kirbee and Holly fighting.
The only way to combat the shitposters and waifu-warriors is to post good content, have good discussions and, to ignore bait and people trying to start a fight.
>>6897784
>>6898048
Nice. All that practice is paying off.
>>6899933
I don't think the person who keeps spamming "Hollycucks begone" cares much about discussion.
>>6901291
Easier said than done now that we have resident shitposters and people too stupid to recognize obvious trolling.
>>6900106
>canon Allie does not wear any panties
She has no choice. Underwear for an alligator isn't easy to come by and if she had some tailor-made it would be an expensive embarrassment that would also make people notice instead of ignoring the issue.
>>6901635
>Shit, we didn't even see Kirbee for damn near a year, thanks to the flashback.
Don't you mean Holly?
>>6891966
I've long suspected part of the reason he keeps the format is because on some level he's hoping Endtown will someday be picked up by newspapers. I don't think that's going to happen though.
>>6902976
In a way it's already on a newspaper so it might be needed for standards. Don't you know what GoComics is about?
>>6903022
No, please enlighten me. I've always thought it was a generic comics host site.
>>6903036
It's supposed to be for syndicated newspaper comics. Endtown is the exception.
>>6903057
Ah, so still not actually in an actual, real-world newspaper.
I remember that the 2x2 format has been a thing since before the comic switched to GoComics, though, unless Modern Tales had the same restrictions... but then, you'd think if it was because of that kind of standard, they'd go all the way and mandate that he "unroll" the four panels into the usual weekday newspaper strip format entirely to begin with (heck, he even plans them out that way, as you can see in the Christmas pic above).
I always thought it was supposed to be flexible like that anyway - four equal panels that could be displayed vertically or horizontally with a bit of cut-n-paste. Perhaps GoComics makes a further exception and treats every strip like a Sunday strip?

I was reading on TV Tropes about Endtown(Yes I know, but I wanted character info), that Holly has her teeth drawn larger over time.
Is that true?
>>6906526
Link?
>>6906526
It's been commented on repeatedly, yes.
>>6906529
>Off Model: Her front teeth have been getting bigger and bigger as the strip goes on to the point where it's started to look very odd. This may be intentional on the part of the artist, as it seems to start around the time she begins to be portrayed less sympathetically.
>>6906519
>yfw that gif is anatomically inaccurate
>>6906565
it's true but we don't know if it was intentional.
>>6906548
But if it's done imperceptibly over time, I have a hard time noticing that sort of thing. Before and after comparisons are better.
>>6906565
>She got in a flying car crash after being clipped by a plane, watched her friend being killed by robot explosives after mutating into a snake, mutated into a mouse, lost her baby, had her husband mutate in front of her, watched her husband die, got in another car crash and then caught in the middle of war. All of this happened in one day, before the comics timeline. Fresh trauma comes later
But, that's wrong... this did not happen during the span of a single day.
Arron is a little loose with his characters but her teeth did get noticeably bigger
and smaller at the end of the arc
>>6911941
This picture fills me with serenity.
>>6912150
I've heard bad things about him. Did nobody tell Aaron that KC was exerting a negative influence on him?
>>6912135
KC's an ageing smutmeister with some amount of skill who used to be semi-big in the furry fandom. He tends to latch onto popular things and wring every last bit of attention he can out of them via porn commissions, with which he is frequently tardy. He's done a lot of fanart for Endtown and recently appears to have specifically done a lot of Kirbee art at Aaron's urging, including some porn that only he and Aaron have seen. He has a terrible tendency to act like a combination backseat moderator, PR man and community manager, as well as persistently attempting to enforce Word of God plot points whenever he realises that Aaron has failed to convey something properly in the comic (from what I understand, Aaron gives him advanced spoilers and discusses the plot with him in detail).
Jamil's a traditional-media comic artist who's done a lot of fanart for Endtown (including some very cute lewds) and is currently doing his own furry comic called The Tale of Jasper Gold. He's a very good artist with burgeoning skills with a brushpen, and I think we're all pretty okay with him. He certainly seems nice.
IIRC they've both become fairly close pals with Aaron. The consensus is that KC was probably Aaron's main source of information on the feelings, reactions and opinions of the /co/ part of the Endtown fanbase, and has probably bent things somewhat in the process of relaying them to Aaron. Currently he seems to be persona non grata here and in the /co/ threads, having more or less worn out his welcome.
Did Sarah sleep with Piotr because the amnesia made her keep forgetting how much Jim sacrificed for her?
The mutagenic mental block seems pretty sinister and powerful.
>>6909128
I always kindof liked her, surprised nobody else has drawn her.
>>6907129
>>6901753
No, Kirbee. Holly too. But the entire flashback focused on shit that was an illusion. Kirbee was standing there in the background, so we technially did see her a few times, and she might have said a few things, but she did not impact the story, and the flashback did not impact her character.
What I'm saying is, the flashback was just kind of shitty for everyone involved and only interesting in its own right, as an account of Holly's experiences before the end of the world, and in shedding some more light on that event for us.
I think it's kind of weird for Aaron to fap over Kirbee when he just parked her to the side (along with everyone else) for a year. I get the impression he's going off a narrative that only exists in his head.

Aaron can play kind of hard and loose with his art. I noticed Holly getting less "cute" when her character broke down in the run up to the flashback ship. I think he does it subconsciously more than anything else. He wants the character to look unreasonable, and so her proportions go out of whack.
>>6912177
>Did nobody tell Aaron that KC was exerting a negative influence on him?
why would anyone?, you realize how childish that sounds?
>>6912097
i'm pretty sure those "collabs" were Kc's idea.
>>6913658
How is that childish? Telling a king that his advisor is a rotten crook? Obviously KC is trying to be on Aaron's good side and feeds him BS info on how people react to his poorer writing.
Not to mention KC is VERY possessive of Aaron as evidenced that when the ill-fated RPG is mentioned he is trying to call out the RPGAnon by what I assume is real name and imply some kind of malicious deal.
If anything that guy is mentally ill and the further he is from a guy who has a really bad people's skill the better.
>>6913766
They are close friends now, how would you go about telling him to stop hanging out with him?
>>6915069
dem cock sucking lips
>>6915069
>>6912281
No, she pondered it for a bit but decided that saving her own skin is more important than anything else. And after deciding to leave Jim she basically gave no fucks anymore (except the one for Piotr, the only one he got).
>>6913232
Bullshit, Kirbee had a lot of moments during the flashback. The one who got stuck to the sidelines was Chic, it even seemed like he was invisible to Wally!
>>6913249
>He wants the character to look unreasonable, and so her proportions go out of whack.
She looked wacky in general. Those pages were unintentionally hilarious.
>>6915897
Probably should've posted this face alone, to make the point clearer.
>>6915713
We literally know everything there is to know about chic, how was his character supposed to develop on an arc completely devoted to Holly's past? what the fuck could a 5 year old add to the narrative?
>>6915897
Kirbee literally fucked everything up at that point.
>>6915897
>Kirbee buries clive
>literally killing him
>People is ok with that
Holly was right, Clive was a living being and Kirbee doomed him to die.
>>6917324
The real bullshit is the tracking device that Aaron pulled out of his ass. I feel like he could've just had someone kill Clive.
It would've felt less contrived, and Holly would've been screaming less at everyone.
>>6916012
>how is a CHILD capable of DEVELOPING?
>>6916012
>what the fuck could a 5 year old add to the narrative?
Well, I'm thinking he could have been the best one to ask a lot more questions on behalf of the readers, since he was born after the old world died. His reactions could have given him valuable character development.
>>6917517
This.
>>6917464
You are an idiot if you think he was gonna learn anything from Holly's flashback besides what grass is or how many toys a child would get, keep in mind the flashback only lasted half a day.
his character will develop in the next arc with Wally and Kirbee.
>>6917517
Well, that's a good point, but again... what kind of stuff he could have possibly asked about? being a 5 year old, i don't see him asking about the mutagenic virus or what buddibombs were...
>>6917517
Instead we got Kirbee doing that like she doesn't even belong in the same comic.
>>6917595
Give me an example of something that Wally and Kirbee talked about, that would have been more convenient for Chic to ask.
>>6917580
>what kind of stuff he could have possibly asked about?
How about EVERYTHING, you idiot? He lived inside walls up to that point, for crying out loud! It's a wonder that he's not asking about the fucking SUN.
>>6917631
yeah, an arc about Holly's backstory is gonna be about wally explaining chic every single little fucking thing in the universe.
>>6917580
>i don't see him asking about the mutagenic virus or what buddibombs were...
I actually *could* see the little kid wanting to know all about what the little clown-faced robots were...
>>6917692
Maybe, unfortunately Aaron decided to keep them as sort of a mystery, until holly accidentally triggered them
>>6917720
>Just about everything about Hillside.
I would need to reread, i don't recall much being said about hillside, other than wally was from there.
>why didn't Kirbee know anything?
I believe it was stated that she was not from Hillside.
>The problem is that he did almost nothing. It's unbelievable.
Besides the food, plastigrass and toy scene, i agree that he could have done a bit more, specially stuff that doesn't necessarily involve asking for info.
Again, there's realistically not much he could have said or asked that would be considered important to the narrative, once Holly rolled into the scene and took the spotlight. Yes, he could have asked to the sun, and he probably could have learned about the fake ceiling, but that's just trivial stuff that doesn't necessarily adds anything to his character.
There's also the fact that Aaron seemed to have rushed the arc, so i guess he didn't want to bother with trivial stuff like that.
>>6917881
>I believe it was stated that she was not from Hillside.
So? It's obviously the most important city of Neitherland. It's like not knowing about New York just from TV alone and we know she watched TV at least for The X-Files.
>>6918017
>The X-Files.
Can't help but wonder what the X-Files was even like in a setting with flying cars and death rays.
>>6918017
Just stating a fact, the only thing She asked wally about was what "Kashmere acres" was. She obviously never was in hillside, i can buy her not knowing about Hillside debt communities, specially since she's never been there.
>>6918097
>She's obviously never been to hillside*
>>6918134
No idea, my guess is that Kirbee found Unity after the bombs fell, and that they accepted her for being a lizard.
>>6918164
that would also kind of explain Kirbee's survival experience, if she roamed for at least 1 or 2 years before finding Unity.
>>6918328
We were supposed to get her backstory and walt's during this arc, according to Aaron, he decided against it to not interrupt the flow of the story, which realistically translate in he rushed the shit out of it.
>She sounds like she has little to no experiences before the events of the comic
She didn't, she's was simply a pothead from what we know.
>Aaron was just making up her character on the go.
During the Unity Arc, i agree. She was a one gag character after all.
>>6918427
>he rushed the shit out of it
>>all to get Christmas on Endtown
>>skips that to talk about how the readers don't understand his vision
What happened to Aaron? He wasn't like this...
>>6918525
Fame, KC and a lot of positive feedback went to his head.
>>6918656
>Fame
He's not famous
>KC
Maybe..
>>6918829
>He's not famous
I dunno, I mean, he's getting interviews and wiki articles and so on (though I think the actual Wikipedia article for Endtown got deleted... I seem to recall hearing he was a little sore about that...)
Perhaps attention would be the right word, rather than fame?
I'm sure Holly misses her ex boyfriends.
So... are we going to be moving on to the fabled Walt/Dottie arc now, or is Aaron going to keep Marxing off?
Both?

In before the obvious reference is a misdirection and they're actually being "predated" by a sex trafficking ring or something. I remember Aaron said something about discarding the original "blood orgy" ending of the Unity arc because it made the lizards too animalistic...
>>6926020
>"blood orgy"
Uhh, what?
>>6926036
From memory: Original ending to the Unity arc before the Great Sickness-Induced/Enabled Rewrite was that Sarah would get in good with the Unity lizards, release the others from imprisonment and tell Jim to leave with them because she wanted to stay, and then Jim would go back to try and convince her to come with them, discover all the lizards including Sarah in the middle of a cannibalistic blood orgy eating other prisoners, and get eaten by her in the midst of the feeding frenzy.
>>6926020
Orgy is not necessariy about sex, it can be any act of immoderate indulgence.
The original definition was more about the wild singing, dancing and drinking in pagan festivities than the sexual activity.
>>6926076
She actually recognized him and said "I'm sorry" before devouring him, IIRC. It carried over to the current storyline since that is still the last thing she says to him before Jim goes mad.
>>6926110
>Orgy is not necessariy about sex, it can be any act of immoderate indulgence.
That's what I mean, - it was cannibalism. Aaron discarded the Sawney Bean ending because it made the Lizards look too ruled by their instincts, right? So has he gone back on that (and back to the way things were in that encounter between Holly and that one cat dude) or is this going to be a different sort of "predation" and a different sort of "appetite", but we're intended to jump to the obvious conclusion at first?
>>6925905
>Pig's name is Melvin
Mel Blanc or Melvin Millar reference? Aaron likes his old cartoons...
>>6915713
"Moments" aren't the same as actual fucking focus. The flashback went on for too long, and never really showed us the real characters. Wally got the most screentime, and even he was usually just reacting to something that took place.
Nothing fucking happened with the characters in the here and now. And I honestly don't understand how you can sit there and say "yeah, this character got enough development during that time". The flashback was, essentially, a big dead zone.
But with that recent Marx tomfoolery, I'm kind of zoned out, at this point.
>>6915897
I find Angry Holly to be quite disturbing. Her head gets way too big.
>>6926626
>Her head gets way too big
Nah, it's always like that.
>>6917720
>Hell, why didn't Kirbee know anything?
Because Kirbee is written as an innocent idiot. Aaron said it himself: She's better equipped to deal with the world than Holly. I suspect it';s a holdover from her character in Unity, where her blissfull ignorance allowed her to live happily in such a depressing, insane environment. Hell, right before Holly disappears into the flashback Kirbee drinks the water that just appeared there, and it's presented with this kind of "farmer's wisdom". Of course, when Holly wants to go deeper down the rabbit hole, she goes from Normal Holly to Angry Holly in the space of a panel, and suddenly it's also a bad idea. What if the water itself was the trap?
Kirbee's defining characteristic is her ignorance.
>>6926678
This sounds like nonsense. Hard to believe that's actually how things are.
>>6926707
Honestly I've come to see Aaron as a flawed autist. He can do good things, but he's set in his ways. I never knew much about him, but with what I've heard about his work process, it's pretty clear that he doesn't have any proper insight in how to create a webcomic. Especially changing things on the fly and claiming that it was all part of a bigger plan, or "The Greater Good", seems very typical of the artiste syndrome he's suffering from.
In reality writing a comic is much more like a job. It's developed skill, the product needs to go through iterations, it needs to be polished and honed. There is no such thing as a perfect product existing in someone's head and being directly translated to paper. And the excuse for shoddy workmanship that is Marx, the entire "I'm just a storyteller" schtick, is grating. That sort of thing has its place, but it's not to deflect criticism
The shitty thing is, Marx could be a proper author insert if he were capable of admitting mistakes, or appeared stressed by his huge responsibility. Maybe have some commentary on retconning through him? But nope, cheap dig at the readers it was.
>>6926784
>The shitty thing is, Marx could be a proper author insert if he were capable of admitting mistakes, or appeared stressed by his huge responsibility. Maybe have some commentary on retconning through him? But nope, cheap dig at the readers it was.
Honestly, I kind of read the "I'm not a God" bit as a subtle admission from Aaron, post-email, that he hadn't been skilled enough to cleanly write his way out of the corner he put himself in with Holly.
>>6926855
That's wishful thinking, it doesn't fit with the rest of what we saw.
>>6926873
Yeah, you're probably right. Probably as wishful as me suspecting that the Oracle's reference to Doc (who people were saying was the audience stand-in, much like Marx was Aaron's self-insert) not reacting as expected was Aaron's acknowledgement that people weren't as accepting of Holly's ending as he thought they'd be...
>>6926855
See, in that case I would have wanted him to explain retconning to Doc. As in, he can do it, but there will always be a trace of the old. It'll never fit completely.
You know, something ambiguous and heartfelt. Doc represented us, there. And most of our complaints aren't about Holly's ending, specifically, but the fact that it kind of came out of the blue, relies entirely on second-hand information, and was preceded by Aaron essentially character assassinating Holly after Unity.
And he's big on this multiverse shit. So use it! Retcons can be interpreted as slightly different instances of the same universe. Hell, that's exactly what JJ Abrams' Star Trek did, completely literally. The real question becomes about Doc (us) probably not being able to take going fully meta and unravelling the intricacies of the universe to get what he wants. It's like that Greek tale about the guy who stuck his head behind the curtain of the world, saw the machines the gods had built, and promptly got his neck caught in the gears.
Aaron leaving chances like that convinces me he thinks he knows what he's doing much more than he actually does.
>>6926965
>As in, he can do it, but there will always be a trace of the old. It'll never fit completely.
Reminds me of the History Monks from Discworld, and how they had to reassemble time (with bits missing), and how it was never quite the same afterwards...
>>6927011
I'm imagining something like Marx asking Doc what he wants, and he says to go back to the source. Give me a reality where Holly never cared about Clive, because that's a good arbitrary startpoint for my interpreted deviation from "old Holly".
And then he shows Doc some old pages from the comic, that are exactly the same, but with Holly's dialogue subtly changed to be less caring and more self-centered. And he asks "is this your Holly?"
"No, that's not my Holly. Show me the real Holly"
"This is the Holly you asked for. I can switch you with the Doc in this reality, and you won't even have to remember. Do you want that?"
"No, I don't want that"
And we're done. Aaron gets the excuse he wants for his character assassination, he gets to make a good point about storytelling, and we get some form of closure that goes beyond "just deal with it".
>>6927920
Seeing them at the same size makes me think Aaron should've done a body-swapping episode to get the two gals to bond closer together.
