Well, it's Kindof a pet project of mine. Anyone who knows me knows I have a bit of an unhealthy obsession with the pokemon mystery dungeon games, So I've started a soundtrack inspired heavily by the games. eventually I want to write a very extensive script for a game in that series, complete a full 100 track or more soundtrack, and fix all the glaring problems that i feel exist in the pokemon mystery dungeon series. It may not be as old as the base games, but its still something i've played for longer than i can remember. Anywho, once that is completed, i p[lan to present my work to spike chunsoft, and eventually work with themon one of the games. Its ambitious, but hey - im a 27 year old guy that just came to terms with cancer, the fuck i have to lose now?

Anywho, sorry about the delay - it takes some time to render at decent quality on this tin can, hamsters are working overtime- and the no doubt myriad of typos.

My workflow is still really slow - i've spent the last 13 years studying music, The melody from the first game is just a placeholder at the moment, I literally spent 4 hours last night trying to think of something that still gives you that same feeling of calmness that melody does, and reflects a game that will, in the end, be very different. Go figure im talking about these ambitions in a pokemon smut thread - and currently I'm rendering a much further along track for one of the planned characters, its much further along but also unfinished and the guitar sounds terrible [but its the best i can do with synths until i master the guitar myself]
it might take about fifteen minutes to an half hour to finish. still no melody in it, but again, I'm still building the framework.

I really can't wait to hear more, I LOVE instrumentals that are great for 2 reasons.
1.I love instrumentals that just provoke feeling and thought, which is definitely something like this, it's why I listen to chiptunes so often.
2. Music without lyrics is just great for background music, especially when playing a game that doesn't take a great amount of focus, or when you're writing, doesn't matter, this is the kind of music that fits it, and I love that!

Music certainly sounds like PMD... Perfectly captures that beautiful, almost haunting sort of tone that is so prevalent in the games' official soundtracks (and a big part of why I love them so much).
Definitely gave me the same kind of oddly nostalgic feeling that PMD's music often does, invoking that strange emotion somewhere between happiness and longing, if that makes any sense.

Thats exactly what I want to instill with these songs, Ever since i had my GBA these games have made me smile, laugh, get incredibly pissed, feel betrayed, and hell i even cried at the end of the explorers series the first time you get your heart ripped out. It's a passion and I figure, if anyone out there would appreciate it, it would likely be fans of the series, who have been through all that too - Thats what this whole things about. I have amazing headphones, so I don't need to worry about that, there's 1 or 2 things that bother me about this one.
1. Maybe introduce the guitar a little earlier, after a good 2-4 loops of the beginning part, but I understand this is all frameworks, but I would LOVE to have this just to loop in the background (guitar coming in earlier)
2. At the end there, the sound (not sure what to call it, sorta what they use in cheap/cliche horror movies) that kinda hits up in volume in the background of guitar, I think it could do better just turned down or none at all

Of course, i'm no music expert, I've only started writing some fics, these are just personal things that I would LOVE to see/hear, and as for "shitty" guitar synths, it may not be the highest quality, but I LOVED it.

The overall little track gives like a sudden shock of something that has happened, like a sort of "this is the end!? what!? this... this can't be..."
then the guitar hits in and it feels more of "I now accept that this is the end, my end... it's okay."

Sorry, ranted on a little bit there, I just LOVE music, especially pieces that instill emotion, think it's one reason I still listen to Aviators' songs

Kinda makes you wonder what i have planned for this Eh? Needless to say Music isn't something I'd say anyone is an expert on. It's truly a creative frontier that without any other medium but sound can well up emotion, tell a story, make you want to move, or severely squick you out.

Honestly what made me start the music before actually writing the story, was Super mystery dungeons outstanding soundtrack. Songs like the Abyssaal badlans actually set a truly creepy mood for the gmae, Fire island volcano you just couldn't stop jamming to [but fuck trying to play that its too fucking much and my fingers cant move that fast for that long]... Serene village just sounded so relaxing, and when you heard within the sadness playing during the games first actually tragic events, The music also fit the mood so well it gave me peoplebumps. I actually take both those suggestions into serious consideration for that song, and at the moment thats two parts of the song, i've still yet top figure out how to bridge them, and i have to keep in mind the programming of the scene, as such, people will read the dialogue at different speeds, so the song has to be flexible and be able to blend into the cinematics. my plan is to eventually write a solumn melody - the scenes not supposed to be a happy one. After all, i want the premise of "Become a pokemon and save the world" to actually feel like you triumphed over something. As i said, Its an ambitious pet project but- I've got the rest of my life to do it lol.

Yup, Even when you just get an "It's shit" it still makes you look back at it and try to figure out what made them say that, and you learn shit from it - that being said- people, please tear into my ideas.

I apologize about ranting but... heres where i exude a little autism and spew my goals.
3 of the biggest issues i see with PMD, and this is a personal gripe...
1.Complete loss of character of the game in the postgame - it becomes far too cookie cutter and - we have the technology to put a massively large game on a flash cart and have it run stably, and there is so much programming talent out there it shouldn't be hard to find a way to at least add a bit of randomness to the postagame, to keep people enjoying the world
2. Lack of a persistent world - even though this has really good reasons for not existing - i've a few theories to why that may be - but meh that's too long winded
3. The utter lack of a feeling of actual Peril in the games. I know the game was marketed towards kids, and has an attitude geared towards them, but by continuing to hide behind the cheesiness - as much as i love it and i hope to keep it there to a major degree - and make completely light of situations that in any world would literally have the populace shitting themselves through either ignorance or blindly clinging to hope. I hate to admit it but this generations kids are smart, and far less phased by the idea of losing someone or something. Hell its been in the games before, but usually there is no true loss in a kids game - there's always that security blanket of "Things'll get better right? I wish to instil a true feeling of "Wait are these guys messing with me again - or is this really whats happening, and have it be something you wouldn't expect, in the name of better developing characters.

1.I agree, I wish there was some more characterization with yourself, more dialogue choices, even just with talking to random people, but to do that, it would take a lot of coding, and Nintendo is a massive company, I'd imagine they'd have a deadline for that.
2. I have no opinion on this.
3. Yeah, the post-game in pmd games just seems to be a grind with no real feeling added in anymore, at least at a sense of challenge, despair, or feeling in the form of the reasons why you're going on these, have some losses that create a huge impact to those that send you on a mission, and have more than just one dialogue response that they'll give you when you come back to actually make it feel unique.

Heh, In my book its the most important song of the game, As it generally holds a lot of the main musical themes for the game in it. you hear parts of the song scattered throughout the entire game - the most notorious theme for it was Explorer's "Welcome to the world of pokemon. its a constantly evolving melody and this piece isnt to that point.

I'm honestly thinking of titling it "Patience" since - with the option of several dialogue routes - its going to be a lengthy opening interview....
Im thinking of basing the dialogue routes off the nature the game gives you - That way, there could technically be 625 different ways the dialogue could unfold in the game, Can you say replayability? 625 ways to live the same story - but thats a lot of dialogue. Thats an amount of variety that would make even Mass Effect shake in its boots [despite its dissappointing ending, it was quite a pioneer in that.]

Well, at least between you and your partner. If you leave the games randomess to just that variable, it would be fairly easy to code. you dont have to code every characters interaction, with everything persistant characters, such as the Typhlosion, Zone would have a set line of dialogue - as its mostly used as a storytelling point, and then a player/partner interaction dialogue, where only certain responses change. its a shortcut, but also a realistic way to cut down on the sheer amount of writing done. As for player/partner, the 625 different ways just comes from, there are 25 natures, and that would mean 625 different possible combinations of natures - plus i think people would be eccstatic to have 25 different starters to choose from. This is assuming you made nature independant of pokemon, if you had a pokemon dependant on nature, you cut the coding to 325 possibilities. it gets headache inducing from there the more variables you think about but- think any starter from each gen, any personality you want to put to it, and see how the story changes slightly from there.

Other tangential thought, What if there was the ability to fail? thatwould make for an easily branching story that eventually leads to a few different conclusions. Its definitely doABLE - YOU JUST HAVE TO GET CREATIVE. THE DIALOGUE SYSTEM IS SIMPLE, YOU HAVE A DIALOGUE AND A PORTRAIT - THE IN GAME MODELS DONT HAVE TO DO MUCH - AS THEY ALWAYS HAVE - FOR YOU TO GET AN IDEA OF IT. IT COULD STILL USE THE SAME 16 PORTRAITS OF THE GAMES ALREADY ESTABLISHED FOR THE GAMES - ESPECIALLY IF THE 3DS KEEPS A LONGER LIFESPAN. THAT WAY THE ONLY NEW ONES THAT NEED TO BE MADE. tHE ASSETS AND FRAMEWORK ALREADY LARGELY EXIST FOR THE GAME - AND tHEY'VE REUSED ASSETS IN ALMOST ALL THE GAMES - GATES TO INFINITY KINDA TOOK A JUMP AHEAD ON ASSET CREATION, BUT THEN THEY USED THAT ENGINE OF ARGUABLY THE LEAST LIKED GAME, AND TURNED IT INTO ONE OF THE MOST LIKED GAMES THROUGH JUST A FEW TWEAKS.

That would definitely be a dark ending - What i meant is- as you were progressing and your characters grow - what if the little exploit in the game where you just power off then on, then continue to have a flawless recod was removed, What if you failed fighting one of the bosses and instead that sent you down a different adventure - I mean honestly a pre-evolution starter taking out a legendary pokemon would be pretty rediculously strong- What if there was abattle that was coded to seem impossible, but all it took to beat was patience and a little bit of grinding throughout the game to get there- and as a result the boss beating you or losing to you meant that the characters instead of feeling like they could tackleanything and anyone - what if beating that boss led to a series of events that essentially damaged the balance of the world and rather than having one problem happen something completely different unfolds. its all shit that i ask myself. a whole bunch of what-ifs. The former could essentially unknowingly lead you to a set of characters you wouldnt have otherwise met, yet the latter could serve as an excellent way for your characters to realize "We fucked up - and be forced to fix it in a far more difficult manner. Beh, too much to think about lol.

I guess all i can say is- if you had the multiple dialogues, if you had the multiple paths The player would play it once, smile at a well told story, play the postgame until they got the urge to try another starter, then realize everything about the game is getting progressively more different.
they'd keep replaying it to see what else they can find - we saw it with undertale - little choices had a much larger part than expected, though, there would be no perfect ending, just a story based on how you actually played the game and what happened within it. I guess that's just kinda my vision for where i'd like to see the game go. essentially going with the no duplicates clause the games always have though, and say 10 bosses with 3 branch points in it that would pretty much be a possibility of 2600 different possibilities for a story where you make the world right, but that is such a massive undertaking one person doing all that would take an incredible amount of time and likely the game series could die well before that. then there's the already kinda established lore and the theories about it that exist everywhere, how would you tie that in, super mystery dungeon kinda suggests that gates to infinity. the explorers series and super mystery dungeon are somehow connected - albeit separated by many years. the constantly changing world can be explained by their spreading mystery dungeons, and that means a new world for this game. if this holds true, gates to infinity basically says, "Yeah you're not unique, there were tons of humans here," Well the influence of another world could explain how the hell pokemon gained a rudimentary understanding of celestial objects, how they work, and how the heck they got computers and holographic projectors - when in the previous games there was absolutely none of that- they operated by bulletin boards and the hope of do-gooders. It would be quite a turn to have your character meet another human in the world, wouldn't it?

It definitely would be an interesting take on a pmd game, all I can think of in that regards is taking something like a Final Fantasy game, and fusing it with PMD, to get an infinitely long story, with many choices inbetween, while there's that 1 ending (usually) in FF, there's so many ways to choose to get to it, so many paths to do, so many choices, but with the added bonus of what you want to do of having many many different endings based on that, it would be a huge thing, but don't you think there's ever a point where it's just too much? and some people wouldn't enjoy having too much of one thing?

Yo Disastermon, I read your Scolipede fic from the last thread. Here are some of the things I noticed:
>You usually should write out the numbers 1 - 9 as words instead of numbers. Ex. Line 15; "2" should be "two".
>Some instances of repeated wording. Ex. Line 28 and Line 29; "as usual".
>Line 46; "of...Well...Whatever happens when Pokemon faint" should probably be "of... well... whatever happens when Pokemon faint".
>Line 53; "or.. would I?" should probably be "Or... would I?"
>Some inconsistent capitalization of terms. Ex. Line 60; "pokemon" should be "Pokemon".
>Some run-on sentences. Ex. Line 73; pretty long run-on sentence.
>Line 96; "You pant a big" is probably missing a few words, like "of relief" or something similar.

All in all, pretty good for someone who's still working on writing fics. I prefer something with a little more substance than a greentext, but that isn't a huge deal. I do wonder how the trainer explained his lack of clothes and coating of bug juice, though.

Gonna read the Absol fic either soon or tomorrow. Looking forward to it since Absol's a personal favorite of mine.

Too bad I didn't get this critique before I started on my Bayleef fic, but I see, sadly the Absol fic might be a bit worse, considering the Absol fic was first, Scolipede was second, if people do request it enough, I may try to learn writing in other styles than just greentexting away, but for the most part, i'm pretty comfy with just greentexting, thanks for those catches though, I'll be sure to use them as a reference for when I decide to remaster both fics!!

Only way to improve is with some critique, it'd be nice to kinda go back to a story I wrote years ago, remaster it, and do a "Then, Now" sort of comparison, so maybe I'll just keep that first version around for years, "Remastering" it with a complete rewrite
