It didn’t rain the day the Loud family buried Lincoln. The sun shone brightly, the birds chirped happily, and the cemetery was swept with a comfortable summer breeze.

This troubled Luan. Her family had spent the last week grieving, and the universe couldn’t even give them the courtesy of a gloomy day for a funeral. The priest was reading from a bible, but his words were like static to the teen. She meekly looked around at the rest of her family, dressed in black and looking down at the closed coffin before them.

Her parents clutched at each other, heads buried in each other’s shoulders so they wouldn’t have to see their young man lowered into the Earth. Lily sat in their mother’s arms. Although she was too young to understand what was going on, she could feel through the mood of the crowd that something was deeply wrong.

After the funeral date was announced, Rita and Lynn Senior had tried to make it clear that they didn’t blame anyone for what had happened, it was a terrible accident and nothing more. Luan’s other siblings held no such sentiment; most of them hadn’t even looked her in the eye since that day in the hospital.

She could feel it; they knew that it was all her fault. Even her parent’s attempt at comfort seemed like a hollow attempt to avoid losing a second child. Luna had moved out of their shared room several nights earlier. She didn’t give any direct reason, but the venom in her gaze said more than any words could. The quiet gave Luan time to listen, and as whispers through the vents her family’s true feelings came to meet her.

Movement in the crowd broke Luan from her trance; it was time for the family to say their last goodbyes. Lynn Senior reluctantly left his wife’s side to stand by the fresh grave. With tears clouding his vision, he threw the first handful of soil onto the coffin below.

One by one the friends and family of Lincoln Loud threw dirt onto the coffin below, each one saying their last farewell to the boy. The last one to go was Luan, figuring that everyone else deserved to go before her. Holding her ball of earth tightly, she looked down to her brother’s final resting place.

“I’ll make it up to you Lincoln, I swear.”

The last speck of timber was buried in soil.

Luan hit the floor of her bedroom. After the ride home from the cemetery, no one wanted to be around the house, the area near Lincoln’s room had taken on an especially gloomy demeanour. Now Luan was by herself. Still dressed in her funeral blacks, she lay still on the carpeted ground.

“Things are feeling pretty grave around here.”

She tried to force herself to chuckle, but only a few heavy breaths came out.

“That wasn’t funny.”

Luan shot up.

“Hello? Who said that?”

There was no answer.

The teen began to search the room for the source of the sound. She checked her video closet, she checked Luna’s remaining instruments, she checked her prop shelves. Finally she looked under the bed. The only thing there was a familiar brown suitcase. Pulling the case out, Luan flipped up the lid to see none other than her partner in comedy.

“Was that you Mr. Coconuts?” she asked the puppet.

But Coconuts didn’t answer. After all, he was only a dummy. Pulling her friend out from his place of rest, Luan looked the wooden man in the eyes. There was none of the judgment of her friends, none of the resentment of her family, none of the hatred felt by her former roommate. This tiny wooden man was her only comrade in the whole wide world.

Finally, this was enough to make Luan laugh.

And laugh she did, she laughed until her throat was horse and her eyes were red. Thanking God that her family wasn’t around to hear her and jump to any unfortunate conclusions. The laughter broke down into giggles, then chuckles, then silence. And it was in this silence that Luan began to notice some things about her wooden friend that had never caught her attention before.

His suit and hat were dirty and battered, worn away from a year’s worth of performances. His hair and rosy cheeks had begun to lose their colour, and his pompadour had become tattered and dirty. This wouldn’t do, the family may have been far from a laughing mood, but Luan still had a business to run. With the expenses of a funeral, the Loud house would need as much financial support as it could get.

She had put off doing shows for as long as she could, but if she were going to get back into the game she would need her favourite assistant.

The hat and jackets had been custom made years ago, and there was no way Luan would be able to find the right material to repair them on such short notice. But there was one place Luan could get fabrics that no one else would need.

“I think it’s time for a wardrobe update Mr. Coconuts.”

Checking to see that the hallway was clear, Luan snuck down towards the repurposed linen closet at the very end. The shadows around Lincoln’s door seemed darker than usual, and as she opened the door she could swear that she heard the room breathing.

“I’m sorry Lincoln, but I need to borrow some clothes.” Luan whispered to the angry walls.

Reaching into her brother’s dresser draws, Luan snatched an orange polo and a pair of blue jeans. With her prizes in tow, the comic returned to her room to begin sewing.

The material was fine, but would have to be heavily modified. Luan looked over Coconuts closely as she measured him up for his new duds. On closer inspection the damage was even worse than she thought.

“Oh, dang it.”

Kids could be so rough to her little wooden chum. Just one rough birthday boy and his perfect smile had been blemished with a large chip out of his front tooth.
