In my opinion it's a mistake to just lump in non-kemono art into a general "furry" category. It's more accurate to see kemono as its own sort of style. Typically, kemono simply means manga-style furry art, and anything that uses enough manga style elements can be called kemono.

In what we typically call "Western fur" you can probably identify a range of general styles, ranging from realism to borderline abstract cartoony. If you have an image that is defined by strong lines and no shading, you don't have "Western" art, you have ligné claire art, for instance.

I know a lot of people complain about how humanoid kemono art looks, but even when they draw muzzles, it all seems to look better than when a western artist does it. I've been trying to put my finger on what makes kemono look so appealing to me but it's a struggle.

I'm thinking maybe it's the animu hair. I know it's more realistic in some way but the single "tuft" of hair/fur in between the ears that literally every fursona on Furaffinity has is kind of obnoxious.

Wrong, muzzle length or facial features largely depends on the artists style. Look at all the canine pictures above, you'll notice that some artist have them with long muzzles while others have them with short muzzles. Some are portrayed to be very animalistic while others appear more human.

Why I view Eastern Kemono to focus on the animal aspects while Western focuses more on the human aspects comes down to behaviors being displayed.

In the west Anthros are more often then not portrayed in roles or seen expressing behaviors which are interchangeable with humans while their animal behaviors are often limited. Again this depends on their artist but its more often then not true.

In the east however with Kemono it is the inverse, Kemono's more often then not are portrayed in roles which reflect their species or Japanese mythology. Dogs being subservient to humans and even displaying clear canine behaviors for example or serving roles that their feral counterparts do in real life, like dobermans and shepherds being cops. When it comes to their behaviors they are very visable. Dogs pant and wag their tails, cats meow and maybe even groom themselves impulsively, birds chirp and.... you get the idea.

Let me spell it out for you Kemono translates as 'Beast' and is a genera made up of sentient animals both anthropomorphic and feral. Looking human and having a flat face is not a defining aspect of the genera. Simply being an animal other then human with human like intelligence is.

I said it was common, not defining. My argument from the beginning has been in the East with Kemono artists they tend to focus a lot more on the animal traits such as behavior then artists do here in the West. Just skim through a dozen or so manga and doujinshi and you'll find in most of them animal characters... well acting like the animals they represent. Again dogs curling submissively, panting and heavily tail wagging for instance.

Here in the West with furry the focus is mostly on aesthetics as opposed to behavior with a large number of artists. Often you switch out furry characters with human characters and you'd not be able to tell the difference because its more uncommon for characters here to be portrayed displaying overtly animal-like behavior aside from ear and tail placement for purposes of expression.

I would go on but I don't feel like writing an essay here. Suffice it to say there are reasons for me saying all this, experience from being in the western fandom since about 93' only being one of them.

We are the horniest motherfuckers on the planet. Most other species are like us for only a set few times. This is part of the reason breeding some species (like panda's) in capitivity is insanely difficult. In nature, they roam a big area, leave scent marks, bark at the moon, etc. They know when their breeding cycle is coming, they know where their males/females are, and generally are completely capable of producing offspring.

But in captivity, all those cues are gone, and added is a lot of stress.

Of course, you can go the Dark Angel route and give them normal human sexuality, but also make them go in heat once a month or so.

Most species seem to have set heat-times around a time of year, but there are some who are based on temperature (like aforementioned rats, and cats).
California has a stray cat problem, because their year-round temp is their mating trigger, meaning they're always in heat, there.

Rats have two temperatures, and I don't think (if I'm wrong, please correct me) they're that high, being they can breed in more varied conditions than your average animal.
