And finally, I remember you asked a question about the world a while ago bazza and I never answered, mostly because you'd managed to pick apart one of the few parts of the world I didn't have sewn up yet like some kind of metasniper god damn you, you sexy Australian bastard.
The answer is that Rats and Mice weren't always civilised, but always had the capacity for it. For the vast majority of the time humans and rodents have been on earth, rodents were perfectly fine scampering around and squeaking at one another. Somewhere around the height of the Roman empire however, the rats that had been living in Roman cities started to realise "wait a minute, these humans have got this whole society thing down, why don't we try this?" and so for the rest of the Roman Empire's existence, clusters of civilised rats started popping up all over Europe (Eastern rodents were already fairly civilised but stayed mostly to themselves) and the mice quickly followed suit until eventually most rodents were part of a society, but when the Roman Empire fell, it took a lot of rodent society with it, reducing the once large community to little clusters of rodents living around Europe. It was only until about the 1500s when rodents tried the whole houses, languages and commerce thing again, with lots of the smart ones just up and fucking off into the countryside to start their own colonies (which didn't go all that well.)

Eventually, rats and mice that stowed away onboard the ships that America's first settlers arrived on formed their own little towns with the early Americans, spreading their ideas of society and etiquette and whatnot to the still mostly "feral" locals. This went substantially better than their human counterparts' efforts.

From then on, mouse society predominantly grew with the burgeoning human ones.

For the most part, rodent civilisation got much more dense and the amount of "civilised" rodents compared to "feral" ones rose dramatically towards the end of the industrial revolution. By the time the 20th century rolled round, only small clusters of the squeak-n-scurry sort of squeakers remained. Today, just as rats and mice can be found in just about any country you can think of, so can their little societies. The one downside that they constantly face, however, is the inability to effectively sever from human civilisation, being so reliant on their food scraps, markets, buildings and gadgets to live their lives, leading to a weird quirk in their economy.

The quirk is simple: knowing humans, appealing to their love of cute things and not startling them works best to prevent humans just instinctively trying to kill them. Thus if a human were to suddenly stumble upon a whole mouse town in an abandoned underground station, then the official protocol for this is for all rodents involved to simply stop and hold their hands in the air and try as best they can to communicate their intelligence. This has thankfully never happened, but if it ever were to happen, it would cause the entire mouse economy to crash so hard as to wipe it out entirely, as almost the entirety of their economy is based around the value of stolen human stuff, and humans suddenly realising that there's a whole load of mice responsible for all sorts of shit going missing would therefore make everything worthless, seeing as once they'd communicated their intelligence, the inevitable merge of societies would render all human shit worthless because trade with humans would have to start in an official manner.

Though a Black Rat by nature, Rainen has shaved and waxed most of the fur from his body, save for some chosen critical areas of preference, partially specified by his pornographic profession. The reason for his removing of his fur was for a few reasons; First and foremost, as a diehard biker, his desire for tattoos and piercings was greater than his desire for fur. He also had a rough upbringing, and runs a rough lifestyle, and has suffered third degree burns and many scars in his altercations with other biker gang members. Therefore, rather than keep his patchy spots of fur, Rainen decided to rid himself of the trouble.
Rainen is a hypersexual by nature, and is also bisexual. It was under these two circumstances that he fell in love with Angelica Florez, a lab rat also with bisexual hypersexuality. Rainen was immediately attracted to not only Angel's free spirit, but the ice-blue contacts she often wears to hide her lab rat appearance and red eyes. He was also one of the only suitors to Angel to completely satisfy her lust for sexual satisfaction, even despite a few equine suitors her equine boyfriend at the time. Eventually, Rainen and Angel married, but agreed to keep an active swinger lifestyle as long as they remain faithful, courteous to their partners, and engage in the safest possible sexual interactions.

Also, I guess I might as well include a bio and a physical description for Hattie while I'm here.

Hattie Hudson is the graveyard shift radio DJ at one of San Francisco's most popular radio stations: The Squeak and after going through high school, university, three crummy jobs and a spell of unemployment, she's finally found a job she really likes and a lifestyle that suits her.
Though not inherently a bad person, Hattie has a short temper and an abrasive personality that drives people away almost without fail. As a result she's become accustomed to nobody ever staying with her for more than a week and frequently goes out on her days/nights off with the express intention of getting some action, in order to satiate her cravings.
That is, of course, if she's not taking care of those cravings by herself on pretty much an as-and-when basis.

To go with her prickly and lax attitude, Hattie doesn't tend to dress particularly impressively, nor does she take the time to make herself look much better. Her naturally white fur is usually matted and/or in tufts and has sort of cream colour from her generally lower level of personal care. She often goes out wearing a scruffy jacket, jeans and whatever weird band t-shirts she can lay her hands on. She does not, however, go out wearing any underwear.
