I like monster hunter and seeing all the interesting ways they give various dragons unique quirks, many of them use inspiration off that very same idea, that the wing is actually just a developed forearm like a bat.
Most of them have pretty interesting features that help them survive their environments better or just serve to make a more interesting fight. One of my favorites has to be Barioth, whose forearms are covered in spikes to help it climb. Props for Punchy mcExplodeyfists too, though he's not really a dragon.
A type of dragon of my own machinations doesn't have wings at all, just a pair of vestigial tentacles/limbs in place of where its wings would be, which it uses as thumbs.
Creatively drifting from design norms is pretty fun.

Haven't seen the movie in a while, but IIRC she's treated a lot like a riding-beast that happens to give Eragon access to magic abilities like looking through her eyes and riding on the tip of her tail (which was six kinds of bullshit). In the book, of course, she was the closest person to Eragon (for obvious reasons) often serving as a confidant, advisor, conscience, or just a big, scaly shoulder to emotion at. Additionally, they *completely* skipped over all the time Eragon and Saphira spent learning to communicate, bonding as she grew up, etc - she just kind of flew up, turned into an adult, and landed, naming herself and her role rather than any sort of visible character development. Like, a textbook example of a "show, don't tell" failure.
Plus, they gave her feather wings in the movie.

good catch, for the menu (and other levels) I cast a ray from the camera to the world, and use the location it hits to determine where the player's cursor is. In the menu, I set the max ray distance kinda short for some reason and forgot to change it, so it freaks out when you go to the corners, which are the farthest points away from the camera.

(The dragon doesn't have a collision box in the menu, so he doesn't block it.)

also if you click in the very upper right of the menu a bunch, it unlocks all 3 levels

I usually just wing it, I never use references when I draw and I think it shows; my style is pretty inconsistent.
If I had to draw inspiration from any kind of creature it'd probably be humans and canines, humanoid thigh and shoulder muscle structure is delicious, but I do like quadrupeds.

yea level 1 was the weakest in terms of time spent and thought put into it.

humans are good because they have the most reference material available and are definitely my goto ref for anything anthro, though most of the muscles have sufficient analogues for quads/ferals as well.

I typically stick to ferals, I avoid humans mostly because I can't do their faces right at all unless it's completely anime as fuck.
With dragons and monsters, at least if there's a part of the anatomy that I can't get right I can (most of the time) improvise and it comes out looking good enough.

It's fun just sitting down and scribbling down random anatomical features and slowly building something new onto each one, and I think it's some of the best practice I've ever had.

Keep in mind that commitment is a key element in combat and there is a fair amount of downtime from fighting bigger things every once and a while. The older games are more difficult but the newer ones will have a lot more QoL improvements.

I'd suggest finding a collection of Andrew Loomis book PDFs, they are super helpful for perspective and stuff. Try /i/ or /ic/'s book thread if it still exists. Getting the 3D visualization down is key for giving drawings volume and life.

I've tried using Loomis (the pencil is fun book whatever it's called) but I'm actually too terrible to even get the basic exercise.
When I say I can't line things up on a sphere, I really mean it. Can't even get the 3-axis sphere in, well, any angle but head-on. In the words of Po, "Let's just start at zero. Level Zero."
