Choreography was meh/forgettable, and when that was seemingly the main focus of the short (as well as showcase the switch to Maya), it fell short.

I accepted that Montys death would lead to a decrease in fight quality but the story quality going up.

Qrow likely knows everything about Yang and Rubys fight styles so I can imagine he'd have those two under control. Weiss and Blake might be harder simply due to the numbers game when combined with Ruby and Yang, but Weiss is pretty much a Winter-lite and he toyed with her so maybe it shouldn't be too hard to take her as well.

Blake is the only question mark so he'd probably need to take focus on her the most.

There was actually some really nice choreography if you slow it down and focus on watching Ruby. A lot of it is ruined by weird camera placement/usage and awkward handling of Crescent Rose.

This is also not something that's changed with Monty's death. If you go back and watch a lot of the fight scenes in early volumes (or even the Red trailer for instance), you'll notice that the reason combat looks "better" is because a lot of the time Monty just throws actual choreography out of the window. His fights have a lot of quick-slow-quick-slow-quick-slow, in which during the slow parts (frequently slow motion or otherwise exaggerated) everything makes sense and is clean, and then during the quick parts, physics goes out the window and he basically covered up nonsense motion using flashy effects and wild bluring/stretching, with hands frequently not even on weapons.

Pic related, the left are the slow moments and the right are quick moments.
The last two are an example of a moment where Crescent Rose just completely jumps from one position to an entirely new position angle and direction of movement.

A lot of the early fights were less about good choreography and more about using animating tricks to trick the viewer into believing shit that doesn't hold up to closer observation. Which isn't to say the V3/V4 stuff doesn't have choreography/weight/timing/movement issues, just that part of the reason for that is that in a lot of cases, they are trying to animate actually possible stuff instead of relying on flashy blurred spinning moves.

M&K could easily write that confrontation out any way. Make him curbstomp them, have it even or have them overpower him.
I don't want to argue which one of these is the most likely since we don't know shit, and even if we did the usual power level fluctuation in RWBY would make most conclusions meaningless anyway.

I wasn't saying Monty's animation shouldn't be enjoyed. I was simply pointing out that Monty's well lauded "choreography" isn't actually any significant talent or understanding of how fight choreography works. It was him having more than a decade of experience animating fight scenes and knowing tricks to make things look like they were working and put together when they really aren't.

A major difference between V3/4 and V1/2 is that those tricks aren't being employed, and the animators are taking a more realistic approach to handling fight scenes. It's honestly a more reliable long term strategy, because with improvement it will yield actual good choreography and not a bunch of blurs and flashes.
