I don't think there is a specific source, it's kinda what some might call a "zeitgeist".
I mean, out of the blue more people started to draw their character curvier, not afraid to show bellies, etc.

It's not even limited to furry art, if you look at hentai sites you'll see that the "bbw" tag has become a lot more popular.
We even have animated hentais that openly sexualize plump girls, something that would've been impossible 5 years ago. (Valkyrie drive for a recent example).
So yeah maybe Mei from Overwatch and Toriel made the "thicc" meme mainstream but it was more of a progressive general state of mind.

Well (sorry for out topic everyone), maybe you aren't aware, but back in 2013 a guy started making chalo edits of various pictures. You'd just request the characters, a pose and he would do it.
Naturally you'd think Mora, Alej and the gang would have the most pictures (and they kinda had), but surprisingly Cocoa was one of the most requested character and in the meantime, she won the popularity poll of the sexiest character on the katbox forum.
Notice that I'm talking about what was a Very minor character, barely seen on her own side comic.
After that, Chalo rebooted dungeon and dames (the side comic), not afraid to show her full body, she appeared in the main comic and even tumblr asks and smuts.

Cocoa's history is peculiar. Went from frumpy looking fat D&D girl to elevated extra cause she was thick and part of "the bad girls" in Best of the Breasts.
