but I haven't read the whole chapter

greetings desktop friends. i dropped shakunetsu takyuu musume, because while the characters were qt i didn't like their interactions overall and the mc's idol complex in particular seems like its going to create unpleasant conflict in the future and i picked up way too many shows anyway. that was my rationale for dropping it

hey kuro is there any anime where the cousin character wins except maybe ben-to? that archetype shows up in vns a bunch from what ive seen but not so much in anime & is usually a second or third stringer. trying to decide if that character is related to or a subset of the osananajimi character, or its own unique thing

or even where shes a main girl. i think it might be solely a "porn thing"

i read in a book that wealthy japanese families would sometimes adopt a girl child into their family as a sort of "backup wife" for their eldest son in case they couldnt secure a suitable bride for him. And that stories featuring this element were the inspiration for "imouto" characters in anime/manga—the archetype already existed in social memory, and was just revisted. this also explains the not blood related thing probably. really makes you think (about anime)

sankarea is a good example of what im talking about—ranko plays a basically identical role to the osananajimi character in other anime. denpa onna is quite different though. Of course there's ben-to, with shaga, but she only partially lines up with the role. I think Lamune had a cousin too? In addition to the childhood friend. I'm also looking at class reps as i expand my research.

it started because i wanted to model osananajimi win chances based on traits but i realized that i didnt really understand what the osananajimi was as an actant, and if that role—which im still trying to understand—was tied to the character archetype or was common to multiple types in order to in turn figure out exactly what variables are relevant to the outcome

actually, initially i was looking at hairstyles—childhood friends with short brown hair are common, as are pettankos with twintails. could they be expies of previous, iconic, characters that i am unaware of? And do those characters win/lose in the same way? Could it be that the whole "element" has been lifted and repeated, rather thn being used deliberately? i think theres some truth to this, but looking at the results of the characters actions on the narrative, i think something more complex going on.

pettankos with twintails are good imo

i like short brown hair osananajimis desu. Some good examples are manami from oreimo, akiho from robotics;notes, ryoko from zegapain, miku from symphogear, mami from mouretsu pirates, and shoko from valvrave which was A VERY BAD ANIME but she was good

theres usually also a harem when there's an imouto or childhood friend that is into mc desu

and yeah i touched on this the other day, the only other place you commonly see osananajimis is in mecha and while they act similarly the way they act on the narrative is quite different

i forgot the name but theres another anime where the imouto wins and they kiss at the end

but there's also a childhood friend in that anime and she doesn't win even though i liked her, there were other cute girls too
