I think that they're unheard of until the demons show up. There's only a handful of them and they act like warlords who take over kingdoms to rule over. I Think there is an element to transformation that is pretty harmless from a innocence point of view and is a really exciting, eye-opening, existential sort of fantasy. Actually, if was really recent. I think it branched off of some discussion about the old Flash movie/game days and how one of the big time animators was very much a massive furry. Wasn't really hidden, but you had to look around a bit, and nobody really knew/paid attention to that.
Then, the topic gradually shifted to being in a similar boat as him, feeling somewhat ashamed or nervous about it getting out, and so on.
